And the staff should have let him know that if he did get hurt, he'd get the top amount of NIL possible and we'd take care of him. Absolutely no reason for him to even entertain the portal.

"Maximizing opportunities" just means he doesn't trust Illinois to provide the most $$ if he does come back to CBB.
You are making a lot of assumptions based off of the staff.

Those who don't like what this has become shouldn't have advocated for it.

People who could see what it would become warned about it. No one listened.
I'm going to spend the rest of my life as a wacko crank correctly debunking the conventional wisdom that paying players destroyed college sports.

If the NCAA hadn't tried to use liberalizing transfer rules as a release valve for their untenable position on amateurism we wouldn't be here.

I mean everyone has been saying that. Our insiders, Steven Bardo, I think there was even some chat about it on Trilly's forum. So who knows?
I would think unlocking all the TSJ and Coleman NIL would be huge.
Our insiders have been saying exactly the opposite. Plenty of money.

Remember the good ol' days

You knew who was back and how many years each player had left. Then you could do a little research on the incoming class and how they could fill the voids.

Players are utilizing the portal to help determine their current market value. Illinois will have the opportunity to match or exceed that number, but Coleman needs to know what it is first.

If Coleman leaves for another school, I’m gonna have to take a break from all this portal stuff. Don’t think I’ll be able to handle it anymore for a bit.
I don't have the same opinion on this. Coleman played 4 years here, got a degree, and might move on. I was already expecting him to move on anyway (to the NBA) and under normal circumstances he would have to move on after his 4 years. If he thinks another school gives him a better chance at boosting his NBA stock then go for it. It is weird to play more than 4 years at one school.

It was a necessary evil. Just because we don't like it doesn't make it bad. We'll need to adapt

EDIT: Gritty said it better than I did, NCAA is to blame for this, we shouldn't be mad at any kid that's trying to do the best thing for themself given their circumstances.

Coleman did state in his post elite 8 interview this would probably be his last year in an Illini jersey and went on to mention what he had accomplished. Obviously people say things all the time but he was pretty specific about the illini jersey. Fair to say he's contemplated a transfer should he return.

Bro ugotta...

Agree ... the portal has changed college bball big time.

I can't come down on, or dislike Illini players that transfer. The players have a chance to play more and make $$$. It is what it is.

Booth may be playing on perimeter in a 5-out offense. But I will bet my beach house that he will be guarding the biggest opponent player most of his minutes. If Coleman does not want to guard the 5, no reason Booth doesn’t solve that.
That's only because there isn't a true 5 now. If (when) they get one I don't think this is necessarily true.

100%, I'm not an insider by any means so I can just go off of what I see....Coleman wants to make sure he's covered $$$ if he doesn't go to draft, he said so in his followup statement.

If the staff did in fact tell him he'd get top shelf NIL $ if he came back.... then why would he even entertain transferring?

For sure, chasing older and more experienced players with a bag of NIL is not even close to creating fan interest as recruiting, teaching, mentoring, and coaching Illinois HS kids as they advance through their collegiate eligibility and get a college degree.

I suspect the Flyin' Illini players are cringing and shaking their heads at how this portal/NIL era is playing out. Players now have little chance to become legends and heroes of the University and alums. At some point, the leadership of the major conferences, NCAA, or congress will wring their hands, proclaim "enough of this insanity", and at least make and attempt to infuse reason and caps into it all. If not, we may see NIL deals surpassing NBA deals much sooner than any human realizes. Greed is not an admirable virtue, and the powers that be in education led the way to aggrandizing greed and are now paying the piper. Sad...but true.

Agreed......NIL but keeping the transfer-sit out rule unless your coach leaves would've been the ideal scenario.

But at the end of the day I think the courts still wouldn't have sided with the NCAA if a player chose to litigate.

I’m not an insider, but occasionally get good information. I told this board 2 weeks ago that Coleman would be playing college basketball next year. I also stated that is was possible that it wouldn’t be for the U of I. I believe a return to the U if I is still the most likely scenario.

BTW…My “source” is part of the Illini WBB program. You can see that referenced each of the 2-3 times I’ve had information to share.

That part is undoubtedly true, and was foreseeable.

It is a total blind panic out there.

Went from folks prognosticating that Illinois could and might land the majority of the top transfer options, with specific names being mentioned, just a week ago.

Four years is what we’re traditionally/historically used to, for most of our fandom…but because of Covid it’s changed…

I’m with you to there…
But let me ask you this:

Was it weirder when Trent Frazier played 5 years for us? OR would it have seemed weirder to see Trent playing for Iowa against us his 5th year?

(If it were possible then)
How about Dee or Deron or Nick or Kenny in Michigan or Indiana Jerseys their 5th year?

What is your honest reaction as a fan?
IMO we wouldn’t be fans if it didn’t bother us a little.
