With the deadline being today, I am expecting complete chaos in the portal … 😎

TA is hitting the coaching portal
I think there was a post that said TA headed to Providence. I read it as on his way to try to pull Bryce Hopkins. Some were reading it (perhaps as a joke) that he was heading there to join the coaching staff because he wasn’t in the staff photo with Humrichous.

Yes, definitely meant as a joke :)

Did you see that Fox News today quotes Forbes as denoting Illinois as one of the 10 "new public Ivies" replacing the old Ivies because of their direction toward non-academics.

Could this be used as a a recruiting tool, a school where students are actually expected to attend classes and learn?

How do the games compare for our vertically gifted folks. Are Jake and Hamrighteous the shooters and sub for each other, and White and Booth the rebounders (not saying they can’t shoot) and sub for each other, and we need a 5 to guard to other teams mean big dude. I assume none of these guys would be in a traditional guard ball handling role.

I know I am oversimplifying positions and lineup combinations, but trying to understand who is similar to who.
Your questions are very good. A friend of mine and I were talking last night. We agreed that Boswell, Morez and Tre will start for sure. We also thought that Rodgers is another likely starter simply to be a glue and leadership guy. All the rest are ???. What about DGL for instance?

I think coach is aiming to find a way to get the 3 and 4 spot to play similarly, and we need a knockout 2 and a true rim protector at 5

Boswell
Blank
White (for now)
Hummer
Blank

I’d imagine the 3, white, will be more similar to booty ball action that Marcus did, while the 4 will be what coach had wished Quincy was, with the ability to booty down as well.
Let’s not rule out Ty Rodgers starting at that 2… I imagine he’s gonna work his butt off this summer and be really really good. Also, I could be wrong but I feel like we have a level of rose-colored glasses for transfers- like a new shiny toy… like if Ty was a dude we’d played against during the season and he was considering transferring I’m sure we’d be salivating over the thought of picking him up.

I expect a big Sophomore jump for DGL, as well. I see a lot of minutes at SG

Agreed, even as a total non-shooter he will play a major role, as he did starting as a less experienced player on a much more experienced team last year.

It's just challenging to get the floor spacing to work with him. Humdinger at the 4 helps.

Now, if he magically developed even a halfway threatening wide open catch and shoot 3 point shot, we're talking about a star. But the player we have is still an important one.

Definitely possible, and even the player we had at the end of last year figures to be a more prominent piece.

IMO 3 point shot is likely a pipe dream, he really just needs a reliable mid range jumper. He can get by his man regularly but then his only option is to take it all the way to the rim. Defenses know that and help, which is why his conversion at the rim is challenged. If he can hit an elbow jumper and floater it will expand his minutes immensely.

1st time post here, and I wasn't on reading yesterday, but is there any chance that DJ Wagner is in the mix? Now that Davis is going to Arkansas, do we have a chance?

Agreed on both points. I'm holding out hope we can land some form of a stretch 5. It would seem to really enable a lot of interesting lineups with the pieces you already have in place, namely Ty and Tre White. (Complimented by the shooting of Boswell, Davis, Humrichous, and hopefully Booth if he can improve his shooting efficiency a bit.) Or what if you could even play Morez at the same time as your stretch 5 for portions of a game?

you are kidding me right? Ty rogers starting at the two? the guy who cannot score outside of 5 feet?

No way. Ty knows better than anyone else that his role as a starter will be in question for as along as he is unable to score and space the floor. I sure hope he can prove us wrong with offseason work, but you don't go from 0 attempts from 3 and less than 10 attempts outside the key to shooting 40% from either of those in 3 months of work.

Ty averaged around 22 minutes a game as a starter or so. I don't doubt he will continue to eat those minutes as a swiss army knife, but there is no way he starts at a 2 for this team.

Is there any smoke around Tim Anderson and his role on the team being in question? Perhaps as the disgruntled staff member? I don't see any photos of him during the hummer visit, and i thought that was strange

A mid range jumper is an inefficient shot even if it's pretty reliable, does very little for floor spacing, and isn't really easier to learn and develop than a 3 point shot.

All the talk about our elite KenPom offensive efficiency last year tends to focus on our very good players, which is justified, but it would be a mistake not to understand that our overall shot diet being extremely analytics friendly was the reason that was able to happen.

To draw out the implication, even if Tre White and Ty Rodgers are outstanding playing a game which flows from elbow jumpers, that is an inherently inefficient way to play basketball and the statistics (and our success level) will reflect that.

We were a Moneyball team last year, in a way I don't think the fanbase has really digested.

Love Ty, but I think we can rule that out.

Agreed again. I was going to make a similar point. In my view, hitting an open 3 isn’t THAT much harder than hitting a mid range shot. But you only need to shoot 33% from 3 to average 1 point per shot, whereas you have to shoot 50% from midrange to do that.
