1 or maybe 2 is fine for development but if we pull the UCLA thing (pretty sure we won't but if we do...) that is as far from "pretty smart" as you can possibly get with this.

Brad is playing this pretty smart by going Europe for his center. You can disagree if you want, but I am confident in the kid we are going to land being better than the majority of centers that have been crazy expensive in the portal and for way cheaper. The big time money is going to be saved for their other European target along with a wing
Can you clear this up, aren't there rules against foreign players getting NIL?

All along I've thought that if we got a guy like Onyenso, we'd be in a good spot at center. Not great (like Kalk) but good. Hope we can say the same about this Euro guy...
Also, at one point Onyenso seemed like our main target at center, and now so much noise is about him going to Bama and no real big guy has been heavily connected here - that's because we're looking primarily overseas for our center I guess...right?

The best wings have all gone elsewhere or never entered the portal at all, the search for a combo guard seems to have… ended?, and now the staff is apparently looking to Europe to fill holes. That worked out very poorly for UCLA last season.

The roster is essentially a bunch of third and fourth options. If, say, both Boswell and a guy like Tre White popped, there a higher-end B1G team there. But that’s a pretty big if, and one would hope Illinois would be in a healthier spot than crossing its fingers and hoping.

Would love to feel the optimism the majority of this board is feeling, but I just don’t see it. There’s zero indication Illinois is in on the best talent remaining in the portal, and the needle-movers are getting few and far between. Turning to Europe smacks far more of desperation than savvy.

Sounds like the rest of college basketball caught up to Illinois in NIL, if nothing else.

Interesting. Thanks for the update. Is this “other European target” the one that has been noted as “iffy” by some others?

It seems there are some loopholes and ways to get them paid, e.g. pay them for signing jerseys while they’re back home over break.

Other than Boswell who was rumored every off season none of us knew any of the other players who are transferring in were even considering Illinois
- Davis - nobody here follows Mercer basketball
- White - nobody here follows USC basketball or Louisville basketball (dumpster fire)
- Booth - only heard of him because he committed to PSU right after Amani commited to Illinois. Nobody here follows ND basketball.
- Humrichous - nobody here follows Evansville basketball

It stands to reason that our next recruits will be somebody we have never heard off.

Illinois HS basketball recruiting can last several years so we get familiar with Illinois kids

You’re clearly not a gambler (or a fan outside of the Illini) if you never heard of any of these players.

This just is not true.

Just curious, which parts are you saying aren't true?

I hope you are correct…. So far the European experiments in the past 5 or 6 years have not been particularly successful from what I can recall.

Good thing Brad is. This dude is really half way around the world right now putting his team together.
Oh is he still overseas now? I guess from the Humrichous pics I thought he was back, but maybe those were taken before he left?
