To give my opinion of the question asked if we could afford Cohawk if he wanted to come back to the Illini I am reminded of an Oracle here stating we have boosters that would pony up for OA if he wanted to come back........

I have ZERO doubt that if CoHawk wanted to come back to the Illini that JW & boosters would find a way very easily to accomplish that feat............There's no way I see JW & boosters turning their back to a 4 year Illini who states his love for the program every time he can........

I can only surmise after watching that video that if Cohawk comes back to college that he WILL be wearing an Illini uni.....he corrected Goodman at least 2 times that he's never said he wouldn't come back home to the Illini.........he is smart to enter the portal from a strictly dollars & cents approach and I hope if he does come back to college that he gets as much $$$ as possible ........And I believe he will be wearing the O & B............................

JMHO...........
IIRC, Indy had said that there was dedicated NIL money from specific donors available to pay Hawk and Domask should they come back. That money was not going to affect our NIL pool available for the rest of the roster.

You are 100% correct (in my recollection).

3 takeaways

1. Has not ruled anything out, including a return to Illinois, did say that being in the portal gives him leverage.
2. As it relates to #1, he might feel bad for the guys we've brought in, because they are expecting he's gone.
3. He wouldn't even consider playing for another B1G school, small shot at Luke for donning the candystripes.

As a fan, listening to his comments around your first takeaway was tough. I get it, the world has changed and with so much money on the table these players are going to do, and should do, what's best for themselves. Yet now the norm every offseason is likely to be your star players and breakout players entering the portal as a way to maximize their leverage, even if they are happy and content with their school and role on the team. It seems inevitable that the model will evolve where players are paid by the universities in addition to NIL, but I'm hoping that such a model will tamp down some of this portaling business. For example, in pro sports you can't just leave your team after you've signed a contract, and I'm holding out that rules like this will make their way into the college game.

No idea how accurate this info is, but it caught my eye. Saw somewhere else that we might be in a bidding war for Demin. Not sure what the chances are that we will be able to land him, but would be nice.

I will say this much: in my view, landing Ivisic would be the biggest deal of the bunch, because at least at that point we’d have a decent, viable starting lineup. I think Ivisic can spread the floor enough that it could make Ty startable again, if need be.

You could do worse than a lineup of
Boswell
Ty
Tre White
Humrichous
Ivisic

I’d still love to get a guy like Demin, Wooga or Chaz Lanier though. (And 2 of the 3 would be even better!)

We absolutely have to get another quality guard. And I agree 2 would be better. Lanier or Poplar would seem to fit what we need. A quality big, 1 or 2 guards and we're in good shape.

Ty as a "shooting guard"?

Sorry, I can't get behind that.

Chaz Lanier was an anonymous bench player for KenPom #231 North Florida as a 3rd year junior in 2022-23.

And then he absolutely nuclear-grade blew up as a scorer this year. 51% FG, 44% 3PT, he couldn’t miss. Some solid performances against high major competition in the NonCon too.

Kentucky is involved apparently.

Tennessee is heavily involved...to the point where their board thinks they're the favorite.

How...how will we fill like 5 open spots?

This year is going to be so weird. And likely not very good. We have a lot of solid 6th man type spots, but very short in quality starters. With the exception of Boswell, the rest of the transfers are firmly depth pieces or maybe a good off the bench option. But not legit starters in the B1G i doubt. Then again...maybe one of them has a Domask like breakout?

Red text was a late add as we got to the portal deadline and we started getting a bunch of names that might enter. Right now, any name showing on the list that is a color is orange - I've hidden the rows of the names that I recorded that "might" enter the portal.

There will be some cleanup that will happen over the weekend once we get no more trickle in of portal names where I'll remove those rows and get rid of the red text designation in the key.

@Dan….I would vote for soupy to be credited with a thousand “likes” based on his efforts with the portal info.
Crazy amount of work that goes into that.
I don’t post too much and likely don’t have many “likes”, but if you’re stingy on crediting him those “likes”, feel free to transfer any of mine to soupy.

Ha well I’ve been on the “rather not start Ty” thing for a while, myself. Maybe the temp starting lineup was pointless, since it’s highly unlikely it actually ends up looking like that.

But we also have 2 “non-shooters” on the roster in Ty and Morez that we need to account for and get value out of. Last year Dain and Ty never played together.

In my mind, it would have been tough to handle rotations and offense in a way that Brad prefers if we got a big in the portal that was another non-shooter.

That’s why I think Ivisic is a big deal, because it’s slim pickings at this point for “shooting” bigs. I agree we need more guards, too, but it seems like those are a bit more available at this point.

I could be wrong in that assessment though 🤷‍♂️

Apologies if already asked/answered, but let’s say CoHawk pulls out of the draft and is on the table. Would there be a similar situation to over sign like the plan was for Domask where someone would cover his NIL. I understand Coleman has said he wouldn’t play in the Big Ten but he also expressly stated he’s trying to maximize earnings, so is it possible?

Let me ask the same question in a slightly different way. If Coleman withdraws from the draft, and is offered $2million by Kansas or $2million by the anonymous Illini benefactor, which school is he likely to choose? I confess to being more than a little amused at the prospect of Coleman and Hunter as teammates.

Coleman interview actually made me appreciate him more. Can tell he has nothing but love for his school. I’m not certain he wouldn’t come back to IL if we add the right pieces between now and D-day. Truly hope he can stay in the draft though and get picked up by someone. He’s worked hard and deserves to be IMO.

Morez is a decent shooter. Better than Dain. We don't really know how far Ty has progressed either. I am with most people here though. We need another guard or two.
