Grad transfers always had immediate eligibility (granted, they didn't always have a 5th year, but that'll end soon). I don't understand how Coleman leaving (or even Goode and Dain for that matter, who also graduated) is the event causing so much consternation about the effects of the transfer portal on collegiate basketball. Of all the transfer portal impacts to lament, players leaving that graduated from their university ain't it, imho. Those guys will always have a diploma from the U of I on a wall in their home/office and our own desires as fans shouldn't blind us to the fact that each of them has as much -- if not way more -- invested in this University as any one of us.
The sport is unrecognizable from what it has been for its entire century-long history and my patience with make-believe to the contrary is waning.
IMHO much of this are misinformation being spread by the agents since there are no real way of independently verifying all this exorbitant amount.
Got that, just curious where the information is coming from stating that the $2mill figure was bogus.
There are kids being promised a number then end up getting 1/4 of that number or less. I will say we are very honest with our NIL offers with kids.
Heard rumors that the ship has not sailed. Also heard he is staying in Madrid so who knows.

What the players deserve is what the players have always deserved: the fruits of their labor.
The fruits of their labor - the money - is derived entirely from fan interest in the sport down to the last red cent.
There aren't going to be any fruits to distribute if the fans go away, and this minor league of anonymous mercenaries who no longer even play the schools we care about beating sucks!
"Always" = since 2006
Liberalizing transfer rules in hopes that it would vent off the pressure to pay the players was an obviously non-viable strategy at the time, and it was a direct line path to the disaster we now find ourselves in.
Heard it on one of those Illin insider internet podcasts.

Yes they are but there is a lot of melting down over things that we as fans want when the reality is that we are just observing the players living their lives. Shouldn't their wants be more important in that case? I don't mean to imply that I don't care what happens to the program because my post above should show that I very much do but I will never think that a player should do what is best for my own personal enjoyment rather than what is in their best interest.
And sometimes what's in the best interest of the player isn't best for the program which doesn't mean that there is inherently anything wrong with the program.

Almost every decision made by both players and coaches now is influenced by compensation
One can speculate about such decisions but they are likely to remain in the shadows and the backstage.
Obviously, if a university golf coach earns $350.000 a years, the players certainly deserve their share of the pie.
In the short run I find it quite interesting, but one wonders about the long term adverse effects of power, money and status on the game
I guess now we're ignoring the fact that regular undergrads aren't revered celebrities.

How would that make it any different? Does that imply that they aren't people, or that they aren't students, or that their needs/wants are somehow different or less important as a result? Or that because they are celebrities they have to follow the will of the people who look up to them?

I know Coleman could be frustrating but he always played hard, played with heart, played 4 years (you can be on either side but a lot of guys would have transferred earlier after not playing), got his degree and has openly said he doesn't want to play for anyone who would play us...If we can't support and be happy for this guy then who can we support?
You can't beat that name. (I cannot call myself Great 'my last name'.) Based on the same reason, I don't think CH will get $2M+. LOL!
The NBA remains profitable despite paying somewhere in the range of 45%(ish) of revenue to the players. Just saying.
What's our status with Kaluma? He's been playing well at the G League Elite Camp
Yes, I'm implying CH isn't a person.
The equation is completely different. He clearly isn't a regular undergrad, he has a completely different relationship with the university and its supporters.
He can do what he wants, and i wish him well. But let's not pretend people aren't gonna feel jilted, and i'm calling BS that it would have anything to do with a search for growth through a change of scenery.
