You can't really call someone that plays 38 minutes a game a role player. I think you meant he was a "glue guy" which is an important role on a winning team. Don't forget he got a triple double one game, how often has that happened at Illinois? I think Ayo did it but can't think of anybody else. Coleman was much more than a role player, especially this year, he just wasn't an Alpha on scoring...
Facilitator was probably a better word than role player. He’s the guy who helps make other guys better. Deron Williams made a career out of that from high school to the pros while getting his own as well. Coleman to this point has fallen into that category. But there was one point early in his career where I kept expecting him to bust out and become THE guy. I still think the potential is there for that. My biggest concern for him is whether his K-State teammates are more like his 22-23 Illini mates vs his 23-24 ones. Coleman seems to thrive best when he doesn’t have to carry the load.

You're right...It was Domask this year, but at least he did have one, even if it was a year ealier. And scoring is by far not the only thing Coleman brings to the table.
Coleman’s game against Syracuse was fantastic. But that shouldn’t be used as a barometer for his expectations any more than this past year’s Penn State game should be. He’s not as great as his best game any more than he’s as bad as his worst.

I’m hoping he thrives at K-St and continues to improve as he has each year at Illinois. There will be a learning curve with his new teammates, though.

Marcus got a triple double against Morehead State.

Coleman is a role player though imo. Not really a star or alpha but can do a little bit of everything. Very versatile player.

He also had Terrance and Marcus, so he didn't need to score as much. He definitely has his moments. He scored at all levels in his 30 point game against Iowa.
The E8 doesn't happen without Hawkins, for sure.

But when he pressed he was not great & would get in his own head for stretches. Curious to see if he can take that next step maturity wise with the pressure on.

Hopefully, he never has another game like the Penn State game. I try hard to block that one out. That said, as bad as that game was, it wasn't as bad as Belo's performance against Marquette.

I'd call Dennis Rodman a role player. He certainly wasn't a glue guy. Well, maybe. Who knows what he was sniffing.

Coleman's knees were bugging him the last month of the season -- he could have easily rested them up to get ready for the Draft, and he especially did not have to play in the B1G tourney which he helped us win.

The man deserves every ounce of loyalty we can give back to him, and I hope he has nothing but success.

My hope for Coleman is that he has a breakthrough year, beats Hunter three times and establishes himself as a first round draft pick without having to play Illinois on our way to the national championship.

However… I’m concerned that he excels primarily as a role player. For four years I was waiting for him to become an alpha, but he just never go there. He had a great season last year because he had two teammates who carried the scoring load, allowing him to become an effective catch-and-shoot three point assassin and top notch glue guy. But the year before, when the offensive flow was a mess, he had bad habits that held him back (step back threes, for example). He’s never been effective on the drive so his expertise comes from proper spacing. I know very little about what K-State’s roster excels at, so it’ll be something to keep an eye on.

Should Coleman shoot at the level he did last year, develop a stronger inside game and defend the 4 as we know he can, he’ll do well. But it’s really going to come down to who he’s surrounded by.
Agree with most...it's also possible for a coach to utilize a player differently... for 2 mil he should be a major cog in the teams offensive engagement...not sorry to say this but...I'm glad he got the bag plus he's gets a different coaches point of view...

I would call him a deferring Alpha just because Shannon was in the feature role and Domask was so effective that Coleman embraced being the ultimate do the winning things guy for the team and agree much more than a role player...this season the proof of what he is should be evident...

I like Coleman Hawkins. I'm thrilled he did everything he did for us in a era that 4 year players will rarely happen. That being said, he was the 3rd best player on the team last year.
Most people in college basketball would be the third best player on last year's team. The best player on 90% of teams would be in the same as Coleman last year with Shannon and domask

Most people would've told you Coleman was our 2nd best player going into last year.

Between his knee and his mindset he didn't take enough of a leap & Domask thankfully stepped up.

Brad & ColeHawk butted heads & still won. I think the staff is better off with Boswell, Humrichous and ~500k for the rest of the roster...just my guess

ESPN is pathetic. Between the lack of TSJ coverage (barely covered, then buried within 24 hours) and the Will Riley recruiting page updated THIS WEEK that doesn’t even list Illinois as a finalist, I finally cancelled my membership after 10+ yrs. Honestly, I have no idea what took me so long.

BTW, every recruiting page has a different height listed for Riley. I’ve seen 6’5”- 6’10” 🤷‍♂️

But is that the stat line you expect from a $2 million guy.

That statline is rare air for college basketball. Domask was 16 pts, 5 rebound, 4 assists and everybody was reeaaaalllll happy with his season. Only 35 players in D1 averaged 20 ppg. There are plenty of guys who are big time players who score less and still have a huge impact on the game.

If Coleman is healthy, keeps his focus and plays much more aggressively he can lead KSU scoring and tear it up in Big 12. I'm sure his new coach will push him.
If Coleman grows 4 inches and develops an elite midrange game he can become Kevin Durant.

He is what he is. He just finished his 4th yr of CBB and was an elite glue guy & 3rd scoring option.

And its not like his first 2 were productive or his third wasnt a shitshow incld. a Vasity Blues like scene where everyone went out for his BDay and then played poorly against Penn St.

KSU just paid a lot of money for a really good 2nd or 3rd player. Good for Coleman.
