First of all, you’re referencing a highlight video. I could make a highlight video of Tyler and make people think he’d start for us next year. Second of all, you’re comparing Carey to AJ Storr. Storr is averaging 17 mpg on a top 20 team with a roster loaded at his position. Booth is playing 4 min a game on a team that was just in desperate need of big man depth. That’s a very big difference. Your highlight video also showed he averaged 16.4 ppg last year. It was actually 6.4 ppg on a bad ND team shooting 39% from the field as a post player. It’s all a moot point anyways. Everyone has missed evals. I’m not trying to discredit the fact that Indy has given some valuable insight on here. My point is some people on here are shunned for giving their opinion while others have their word treated as gospel.

Here are some highlights from ND for Booth. Looks like a completely different player. I can absolutely see why someone would think this guy would start for us. It doesn't always work out the way it should work out. See e.g. AJ Storr.

I'm speculating but it seems like there's a hurdle most players have to get past for gaining confidence playing at this stage... For every player besides Boswell & DGL on this roster this was a clear step up in amount of pressure to win each game...

I'm sure it was easy for Booth to make highlight 3's and dunks on a 10-16 Notre Dame team with nothing to lose but it seems like that isn't happening for him under the bright lights. There's also some good blocks in there but I really don't see much miraculous defense, which is the largest reason he's not getting playing time. Some combo of lack of confidence, lack of defense, lack of instincts.

Maybe they recruited Booth thinking he would play right away and if so that's a huge miss. It seems like he has some skill but his frame and still fairly new to B10 physicality in a winning team that a redshirt or a limited role to grow and get stronger were and are more needed. I still think Booth has skill and potential but needs to grow stronger adapt like the redshirt freshman and even WR. WR is just better so is more playable. Booth can certainly improve and grow strong here or elsewhere and be productive at this level in the future. He just isn't there yet.

IMO the staff saw Booth as a "replacement" for Hawkins. Sometimes evaluations miss.

I think that was Ben to fill Goode/Hawkins. I wish we had found a 3rd 5 built more like Dain. Booth can't guard bigger guys as well as Hawkins and even Coleman had difficulty.

Goode/Hawkins were extremely different players.

you can say Ben replacement for Goode but IMO Davis is a better Comp for Goode. Goode and Davis make winning plays (15 minutes a game)
Booth physically was more like Hawkins - 4 who could extend the defense and reports he didn't like playing inside.
I agree Dain or another 5 would have played.

The limited eye test of having DGL, Riley and Boswell initiating offense won't be smooth.
I see a lot of people talk about how Riley is a good ball handler. Brad may have even said it, too. I don't see it. Good for a 6'8" player maybe but it's not a tight handle. Putting your head down and getting to your spot is one thing. Dribbling in traffic with your head up to make things happen for other people is a skill I haven't seen much from him.

you expressed my thoughts better than i did :)

2 comments Brad made at his presser that makes me think he has eyes on Duke:

1. Harping on Morez’ defense. If he can’t stay in front of Royal he can’t stay in front of Flagg and that’s a problem for us.
2. Our big lineup with Tomi and Morez will let us attack five way switching, which Duke does.

We’ve got about 3 weeks to get ready.
Right now my concern is getting a win at Rutgers

I agree, Goode/Hawkins were a lot different and I agree on the Davis thoughts too. I do think they were looking for Ben to be a mix between the two and more effective than he has been as a 3rd option defending the post. It's turned out that Hawkins was better than Ben in that and other roles.

Probably my eyes playing tricks on me, but somehow Booth looks thinner now than he did as a freshman.
Funny you mention that, I was thinking the same thing when he got in the game the other day. He looks like a junior high kid out there

I noticed that too. Looked up his profile on ND's site and he was listed at 203 there. On the Illinois website he's listed at 215. So presumably he has bulked up but yeah, it doesn't look like it to my eye. 🤷‍♂️
Body recomposition ….tighten up more.

I actually think the limited eye test says it looks good. They haven't been on the floor that much for long stretches other than the Ohio State comeback, and the games KJ was out(one we looked great and the other not so much). Now the question is could they do it consistently next year? Hard to tell. As for Riley playing with the ball in his hands....I agree that he isn't a true point guard, but he would almost never be guarded by quick guard with Boswell and DGL on the floor. That would allow Riley to initiate the offense without the other teams primary guard defender on him. If the other team had a great wing defender that could pressure the ball everywhere and was similar in size to Riley, then it would fall on the other guys to handle more, which is ok(especially if Ivicic is back and could initiate offense from the top of the key). What I like about the lineup is it creates huge mismatches for the other team to figure out and for us to exploit. With all of that being said, I doubt we ever have to worry about it because I see Riley going pro anyways

Agree - one of the reasons Riley brought the ball up court against Ohio st was based on who was defending him. But as 21ChampaignSt said Riley handles aren't very strong. But it worked great for a half. I like you doubt Riley is wearing O&B next season but if he is, then DGL, Boswell and Riley as primary ball handlers and initiating the offense, I am concerned. We have a lot of basketball to be played before next fall.

Agree, still feels like half the time he's dribbling he's in a constant state of almost falling down. He's 6'8" but kinda moves like a guy that was 6'1" last year...

That said if you pick 3 guys on our team that have a 6th sense for reading the game and facilitating offense, I would put him up there with KJ & Tomi. For WR it seems like it'll just take physical development and confidence.

That very much seems to be the case and makes perfect sense. I wouldn't say Nikola Jokic has a great handle, but he brings the ball up the floor quite often for the Nuggets and initiates the offense. Guarded by the other team's center, Jokic experiences little pressure until he gets to the top of the key area and so he is able to freely survey the floor as he settles upon how to dissect the defense.

This has nothing to do with recruiting but I feel like sharing because I am grieving. We put down Sugarbell yesterday afternoon and I don't wish it on anyone. My 18 year told daughter got her for Christmas in 2012. She was a great dog. Man, do I miss her so much already. Dogs are amazing but man does it hurt when they are gone. Rest well Sugarbell.

Sorry for hijacking this thread with something unrelated to recruiting. Thanks for indulging me.

Terribly sorry for your loss. We lost our family dog to cancer a year ago. It sucks that they have such short lifespans, yet let alone any additional ailments that may further shorten it.
