After watching him a few times this season, I wonder about Collin Murray-Boyles (South Carolina) as a target. He is 6'7-8", 245 lbs, a banger with ability to score, although he isn't much of a 3 point shooter. He is at 16.1, 8.5, 2.4 this year, with a 60% EFG.

It’s not a knock on the kid … He puts in the work, no problems off the court …

But if he’s playing significant minutes based on what I’ve seen in practice … We’re in trouble …

Brad was talking about playing him 5-6 minutes … That’s probably fair … But he probably could start and be a good player if he went down a level …
But is the question whether he's ready now or whether he's not likely to be a featured player going forward?

I really like Ty. I hope he stays. Of course, he needs to do what is in his best interest.
It's pretty obvious he is really well liked by everyone in the team. Honestly seems so easy for the guy to go into oblivion after he red shirted but I see him talking and laughing with everyone on the bench. Very mature and seems like a great teammate

I had asked you this before as well and I get it. Hard to judge a kid just watching a shoot around before the game. Seems to have a decent shot and obviously has the height to play. We have the scholarships to waste, I hope he stays works on his body and proves us all wrong. I wanna see the kid become a Warren Carter Chris Gandy and blossom in year 3-4. He is the kind of culture kid we need and I will root for him to get there.

Good comparisons, WC and CG!! I would KILL to see Jakstys evolve into either of those kind of bb players. They were both 2 of my all time favs, especially Gandy. Will take a couple years longer and a whole lot of work, but it would awesome to see him produce like either one of them.

That’s the thing. I’ve seen a few on here complaining about him not being worthy of an Illinois roster spot. There’s 15 roster spots, which is a LOT. He literally has zero affect on any other additions to the roster. He’s not taking anyone’s spot or preventing anyone else from getting a spot. I’d be surprised if all 15 spots are ever all filled up.

I hope this season has shown Underwood how important culture/leadership/toughness is to a team and Ty can be offered a lucrative deal to stay. I’m skeptical it happens, but I think it’s worth the investment.
I like Ty, but what exactly does he offer as far as culture and leadership? If you’re not happy with the role laid out, rather than compete and fight for more minutes you just redshirt? Not really what I look for in a leader or for team culture — nor someone I want to throw a lucrative deal at. He was an every day guy his first two years and I thank him for his contributions last year. Now he’s not even an every year guy (though collecting NIL money most likely). I’d have no real issue if he comes back and I’d root for him. But I’m not throwing a “lucrative deal” at him.

In case you want to search for 3p shooter transfers... here's the latest college leaders (3p%).

Interesting that #2 guy is playing in Illinois....Western Illinois.

Name from the past, Raphael Pinzon. Former high school teammate of Andre Curbelo, who we recruited.

Man ... Belmont has a kid every year that can just shoot the freaking crap out of the ball ...

Monsanto at 42% from 3 ... Sure would rather have him than a couple of the guys on our team ... And he wouldn't have cost half a million dollars ...

Also - the kid at #24 ... If he enters the portal ... We will be VERY interested ...

iMac is a straight sniper. 42% on >7 attempts per game is crazy

I’m guessing it was obvious in practices Ty’s lack of shooting ability wasn’t a good fit for how this team plays. Maybe it surprised folks he decided to redshirt on the eve of the season. Regardless, he made a personal decision to protect his limited eligibility and decided to work to get better. He knows what Underwood demands from players during a long season and you don’t have to question how hard he will play. Do I expect him to be a top 3 offensive threat for a team - no. But I don’t think he needs to be.

It's a weird-looking situation with Ty Rogers. Since April, I was puzzled as to how the rebuilt roster would work, and by the end of the summer, Ty seems to have decided it didn't work for him.

All I know is that players and coaches do not share what sort of conversations led to decisions like the one made by Ty. It is impossible to know what was said, what the thinking was. Describing it as "Ty's decision" could be 100% accurate and simultaneously entirely misleading. So I am troubled by the redshirt decision, but have not a clue how it arose. I consequently don't blame either Ty or Underwood.

Boswell's decision making has improved considerably over the season. His defense has similarly improved. He still has trouble against the quick first step.

My concern is that the offense struggles when he is the lead PG. Teams can go under screens and pack the lane. The result seems to be we pass the ball around the edge, make a whole lot of aborted drives into a packed lane (often resulting in a turnover), and then settle for a poor, often contested, 3 late in the shot clock. If Kylan could get back to reliably shooting 35%+ from 3, he might be a serviceable lead PG. With his current shooting, I don't think he can be more than a secondary ball handler. The pairing with KJ is boosting Boswell's results. KJ breaks down the defense, and then Boswell's passing and 2-pt game works.
Hmm? Against Iowa Boswell as lead guard and KJ at the wing was explosive in the first half.

You are right, he made a personal decision, and I’ve said on here that I don’t blame him for making a personal decision. He has to do what he thinks is best for him. I also don’t believe he is sitting out “to work and get better” to come back to Illinois and have a better role next year. He didn’t like the role laid out for him and rather than compete to expand that role he’s taking the year off. That’s not the kind of player I’d be throwing a lucrative deal at.

You say “you don’t have to question how hard he will play.” I would have agreed with that wholeheartedly after last season. But now? I can’t say with any confidence that should he return next year because he has been promised 30 minutes a game and then as noncon season rolls on his minutes are reduced that he’ll work harder to re-expand his role. Now I’m not saying that he’d walk away mid-season next year if that happened. But I’m no where certain he’d show leadership and be a good “culture guy” if that happened. His recent history when faced with a role he doesn’t think is enough doesn’t exactly support that assumption. Again, I don’t think we’ll ever find out because I’d be shocked if he comes back next year.
