If my old a$$ memory serves me right.. His dad came here because he had a great relationship with Lou and his family. Was not happy that Illinois more or less ran Lou out of his job. He then transferred to Syracuse. Can not believe his dad would have originally gone for him coming here, but today money talks.
That was a different Blackwell, Ryan, the one that grew up in Champaign, but moved to NY.

Glynn Blackwell was from Michigan, same high school class (1984) as Kenny Battle (NIU), Hersey Hawkins (BU), Everette Stephens (PU), and Brian Sloan (IU)

Well, Ty does have more time to devote to hosting official visitors now doesn’t he? He’s also one of only two players who aren’t in their first year at the university let alone in the program. Given those two things, I’m not really sure him hosting official visitors makes him the bastion of culture and leadership — more like available and more knowledgeable about school than others on team. And I believe his character is as such that he wouldn’t bad mouth program, staff or school even if he had an axe to grind.

I’m not a Ty hater. I think he has limitations to his game, but he was undoubtedly a net positive to the team and I wish he hadn’t red shirted. But he did, and all the posts wishing he were on the team drive me nuts. Why? Cuz he IS on the team, but he chose not to play. He isn’t hurt, he just chose not to play. He certainly has that right and I don’t blame him for doing what he thinks is best for him. But I can’t write that completely off when he has been heralded as an “every day guy.” You know, the kind of guy who doesn’t take a play off, let alone a year. All that said, I’d have no issue if he came back. But sure as hell would not advocate for offering him a lucrative deal to do so as you suggested in your original post.

Lee gives me serious Feliz vibes. Think he could be a really solid 9th or 10th guy next year when/if we need to go to him. Love the idea of both him and Wagler down the line.
When you write things like this while wearing your orange tinted glasses and guzzling orange Kool-Aid, do you ever stop to think about things such as the fact that no good team gives meaningful minutes to the 9th and 10th guy in the rotation?

He did say he loves the idea of him down the line. Think Coleman Hawkins as a freshman (he was 9th on the team in minutes). Didn't play a ton, but did appear in 25 games, and gained some value experience that paid off later. Another example is R.J. Melendez. Remember how excited we got about freshman R.J. freaking Melendez? Dude was tied with BBV for 10th on the team in minutes (9th was Omar Payne!). And it was enough tick to get us that excited.

Did I say he was going to play meaningful minutes? Said he could be a solid 9th or 10th guy if/when we need to go to him. As we have seen this year, injuries and other crap happens. Reading comprehension would be great. We won't be planning on relying on him at all next season.

Right -- amend the wording to: "very few good teams give meaningful minutes to their 9th and 10th best guys."

MSU and Izzo are something else this year. I really like what they're doing, their fans (and parents) have only barely, maybe, come on board this last couple of weeks, and that team's style is not widely emulable. So: more power to them, but we can't probabilistically look at that as a model for success in Champaign.

One huge factor in the unusual scoring is they don’t have a superstar. A freshman has started to show himself, but MSU has never seen this unique team dynamic before. It just kinda happened. My Sparty buddies keep talking about this fluke of a season. Success without stars.

The question is: in this day and age, are they willing to accept limited roles as freshman or even the possibility of redshirting?

Incoming players that are 9th and 10th in the rotation don’t become anything in the future other than players that transfer to lesser programs. In the past they could also eat up a scholarship slot for 4 years while providing next to nothing on the court. This type of player doesn’t deserve/need to be hyped.

Assuming KJ and Riley leave for the NBA, the roster for next season needs to bring back Morez and Tomi, and then bring in 3 OLD transfer guards - 1 that is a point guard that can run pick and roll offense, and all 3 of the guards need to shoot comfortably over 35% for 3’s. Otherwise, it will be more of the same next season if they go young again. Bring back Boswell if he’s willing to serve as the backup point guard and 1st guard off the bench, and find a big in the portal to come off the bench and play meaningful minutes.

Some are, some aren’t. It’s important for coaches to manage expectations during recruiting. If they don’t understand the amount of competition they should have to overcome to get minutes on this team, they shouldn’t be here.
Do you want to play for something meaningful, or do you simply want to play? There are both kinds of guys, and sometimes what is important to a guy changes as his career goes on…and it can go in either direction.

Early March, when the meal ticket's agents and family members put out feelers to negotiate a better NIL package for next year. If last year taught me anything, this early round of backroom discussions is for establishing minimal comp expectations and creating some market buzz via the rumor mill for the player's services. It has little to do with where the players eventually end up.
