I don't dislike Tre at all, but both his career and this season seem the picture of inconsistency. Jumping schools every year (meaning no one so far has been willing to pony up to keep him) and the "Brad-itis" he had this season. As to the 3-pt shooting improving, yes and that is great, but his only reliable spot is the corner. Easier to defend if you know that's his only spot.

It's not a slam-dunk easy call...it's close but I think I'd take Martinelli.
I’d take Tre just for continuity. I’m so sick of roster turnover.

On the other hand, it seems like the thing Tre needs more than anything to take his game to the next level is to stay in once place for longer than season. Lately it seems like he's bought in, after a bumpy road. It could be that staying here and being bought in from the start, and knowing there will be ups and downs and times when he doesn't see eye-to-eye with BU in a given season, but also knowing he can come out on the other side of that, could be huge.

That being said, I also really like Martinelli and agree that if it's a choice to be made between the two, it is a very tough choice.
Stability absolutely could take tre to another level but I'll pay devils advocate. What if by staying he assumes he is "the guy" but his game doesn't really evolve and he is forced back into the role he has now (not being the central figure). I can't see him being happy in that scenario.

On the other hand, if he buys into his role and shows he can be relied upon in that role, and plays really well, he could be given more of a chance to be a leader of the team and become a more central focus.

Yeah, I mean that's where we kind of have to rely on BU and the staff and that they have a vision for what Tre's role would be and what expectations are, and are able to communicate it to him in a way that they're all on the same page. That's going to be key to any player, whether they are on the roster currently or whether they are an incoming transfer. If the visions don't align then yes, it absolutely makes sense for both parties to move on.

Is Owen Freeman considered a likely transfer and being from Illinois would we consider him? I know he is good but if Rez or Tomi are back I doubt it.

Tre gets 10 ppg 6 rbg with very low usage. That is what makes him valuable. He is an ideal fourth or fifth player in your rotation. Tomas, KJ and KB need the ball in their hands to contribute.

Last year Quincy, Coleman and Ty were the low usage guys. Marcus and TSJ were very ball dominant/high usage.

I hope Ty learned a lot from watching Tre this year. Tre cuts to the hoop at exact right angle to get feed from PG driving to hoop or Tomas in the paint.
Tre also has an excellent mid range jumper which Ty does not.

You can't win with 5 role players but you also can't win with 5 stars that need the ball.

Although Tre stats are similar to last year - he is much more efficient
2024 31 mpg 12 ppg 6 rbg 2025 23 mpg 10 ppg 6 rbg
2024 46% shooting 2025 51% shooting,
2024 2 TO pg 2025 1 TO pg

What he needs to do is get more consistent so Brad plays him 30 mpg as a senior
2026 15 ppg 9 rbg

If he wants shot at NBA - staying 2 years at Illinois. Top 20 team, core player. He will get good NIL. How does Coleman like playing for 16-16 Kansas State vs Elite 8 Illini?

I hadn’t heard it would be the same amount …

That’s interesting and also absolutely insane by Brad …

I agree with you and have heard the same … $6-7 million to spend …

A rising tide lifts all boats. If it's the same amount for Ben but the overall budget is higher then he's getting a lower percentage of total so don't think it's that bad.

Indy Illini Fan Caught Nathain George today... dude is a walking TD. Was extremely impressed by him (granted it was one game) but has incredible feel and would be a plug and play at PG... dude can ball
