Never really understood all the love for DGL’s play coming out of last year. Had a stretch this year when he played pretty well, but otherwise looked like more of the same. When people on here were calling for Kylan to be benched for DGL, I thought I must be seeing Illini games from an alternate universe. Does have some hops though. Can’t remember who it was against, but that block on a run out layup attempt was sweet. Hope he finds a good landing spot should he decide to leave.
agree - never understood the DGL love. Definitely a scorer but not a good shooter and horrible defender.

I agree. There was a second where he provided the energy and was the link to what we've known this culture to be about. Truth be told, he isn't a major minute contributor on a B1G team. Especially top half.
To me DGL seemed to have lost confidence after he got sick. He was not the same player (energy wise, and athletically). He seemed lost....

Question for the insiders, what are the chances that yes Tomi is back (which I am confident about) but he goes and pull the good ole declare for draft, attend the combine, gets feedback, and then officially returns to the team?

He expected to get his playing time back immediately instead of working back in. He struggled after the illness and then lost confidence/hope. I’m sure he was already on edge about playing time before the sickness. Loved his competitiveness but not his offensive and defensive decision making. Was constantly caught napping on D and was trailing the play. I think he may have also tried to audition for the portal and put so much pressure on himself when he did get in that he just lost the feel of the game. I will root for him if he stays or goes.

I know contact is "not allowed" until someone officially enters the portal (akin to a stop sign in a deserted parking lot). But some of these guys might be weighing options I(if staying even is an option, which for Booth I'd guess is not) before they leap. They might not be more than a role player wherever they land. I know there are examples like Podz and even Dain that do find a better fit and/or grow their games, but in most cases the reason(s) they are not getting starter minutes here are the same reasons they wouldn't be getting starter minutes at a similar-level program elsewhere.

KJ regressed the 2nd half of the season. Don't know why. One thing I DO know is he's a long, long way from being NBA ready.

I'm guessing these are the priorities for portal shopping:

1. Unselfish via personality testing
2. Long and Athletic
3. 35-40% 3pt
4. Assignment sound defensively
5. 1-2 years of eligibility left
6. Been there in big games (tournament, etc.)

Given where things were with Tre ~1-2 months ago, I'm pretty stunned that it looks like he is planning to be back. I think I understand what happened there, in which case it's not too surprising that the parties involved could get past it and move on. Still, it's quite a pleasant surprise to hear he will likely be a part of the returning core. ...
I share your view on all of this. And add: the fact that Tre wants to run it back next year, after a bit of a, um, rough patch with his coach this year, says the kid is bought-in. Committed guys are winners, and so Tre's return bodes well for the Illini next season.

I must have missed the news, I thought Tre was dealing with norovirus during his absence?

I'm hoping we are still looking at Martinelli. He has the type of game that would translate perfectly for us. Plus, he got double teamed a lot at NW. Put him on a loaded squad where he can't get doubled, and he might be even better.
I don't think he's in the portal, and with Collins getting a reworked contract and more NIL resources, I'm guessing Martinelli sticks with the Mildcats.
