It would be nice to get 2 or 3 of those guys but if this plays out anything like last year we won't fill our roster out till the end of the portal with mostly our third and fourth choices for each spot. Even so, we may still get some good quality players to go along with our returning core.I mean I wouldn’t even pay $1 million for Dix let alone 2 … Sandfort isn’t good enough to play here … He’s essentially Davis but taller … That’s not a shot at Davis we just don’t need more than one of those guys …
Who would I go get if I could pick and knowing what we’ve got NIL wise …
I mean the possibilities are endless but here’s some guys I’d really consider:
Keyshawn Hall … Ryan Conwell … Devin Askew … Dame Sarr … Reed Bailey … Big Z …
Add those 6 to pair with Tomi, Tre, Davis, Bam, Jakstys, Lee, and Wagler …
Yeah. Those days are gone. It’s all about money. But I have to be honest. I would leave for $1.8 million if I had no NBA future. The college years are his time. I guess the thing that has surprised me most with college basketball today is how deep the pockets are for donors. People across the country have money to burn at 10-15 times what I thought before all this started. As long they continue to pay so much players will move. Why agree to contracts when you can make more if you improve and get huge offers? Why stay for less? These kids are only young for a while and will never make money like this outside college basketball.I just think it is a bad look when an Illinois high school graduate, who by all accounts wanted to be an Illini, leaves. Maybe I am too old fashioned in this modern day NCAA basketball.
If Tomi, KJ and Will were our third and fourth choices, I think we’ll be okay.It would be nice to get 2 or 3 of those guys but if this plays out anything like last year we won't fill our roster out till the end of the portal with mostly our third and fourth choices for each spot. from ESPN: Dainja averaged 14.6 pts and 7.4 rebounds and shot under 59% from the free throw line.I never understood why we didn't push for him. I'll agree with the Morez family and some posters. Dainja as a example would make a mistake and get subbed out immediately. Memphis left him in games all year unless foul trouble. He averaged 18 and 9, plus nearly 70% from free throw line. He was a huge reason for quite a few of their wins. Loss in tourney. DancingBear went for 23 pts. 13 boards, 3 blocks, and 3 steals. 2 fouls. Brad takes certain players out in a split second. Having Ben on court for long stretches at end of games late in season gave me high blood pressure. Tre would be going off and he'd be forgotten on bench for 10 minutes in 2nd half. After pushing us in 1st half. No expert, but rotation management this year was mind numbing.
That’s true. The time constraint really adds pressure to maximize earnings while you can. If you aren’t an NBA guy, you have 4 years to make as much as possible, which in the case of Morez, is 7 or multiple 7 figures per year. Some might not have the opportunity to earn like that again for the rest of their lives. So I understand the desire to fight for every dollar.Yeah. Those days are gone. It’s all about money. Last year, TSJ, Coleman, Domask, Guerrier, Goode, Harmon all graduated. BU wanted to upgrade/recruit over Sincere, Hansberry (who had back issues) Ty and DGL, so Chester quit and took Hanberry and Sincere with him. We recruited over Ty (with Tre) so he redhirted. Leaving us with DGL. Not sure how BU was to retain a bunch of people from last year's team.At what point does Whitman sit Underwood down and ask him why he can’t retain talent?
In the corporate world, a manager with this type of retention issue would be receiving pretty direct feedback and coaching about this issue.
I mean... I'd willingly take him over Ben (who was a starter majority of the year). 40% shooter; can make open threes - simple, but what this team seriously lacked this past season.I mean I wouldn’t even pay $1 million for Dix let alone 2 … Sandfort isn’t good enough to play here … He’s essentially Davis but taller … That’s not a shot at Davis we just don’t need more than one of those guys …

Rudy Gobert, Walker Kessler, Jarrett Allen are all current players that come to mind for me.You need a name from this century
I think this is one instance where we should have an advantage over Duke- Sarr and his camp want to come and give him the development and platform he needs to be a lottery pick next year- we literally just did that with KJ, took a second round pick and made him a lottery pickLosing out on Dame Sarr at the last minute seems inevitable at this point. The word on this kid is out now, and we just aren’t going to outbid the big dogs.
Note just adding this to your comment. Anyone who thinks Morez was only recruited to rebound and dunk is sadly wrong. He had game to shoot 3s ( maybe not at 35%) but his shot is not horrible. He also has a decent short shot. It was clearly obvious to me and my friends that he was being held back by the staff and told his role was what it was. That is not how you coach and retain a potential All-American. If Morez actually did say he didn't want to end up like Kofi or Dain then the kid is a lot smarter than he has been given credit for. There is a pattern developing here and I don't like it.Grass is always greener. New coach gets to tell a player how they were used wrong. Then the new coach uses the player the same way. Player transfers again. If you have any expectation of a player staying at this point you aren’t paying attention.
Everyone is an unrestricted free agent all the time. It is what it is right now but it’s ruining college football and basketball.
Good luck to Morez. He is a good young player but for a million $ they will replace him just fine. I don’t blame anyone here. Wake me up in a few months to tell me what the new roster looks like.
Wrong! Morez was recruited to be a power forward. He has no possible NBA future playing center. He was sold on being a future Karl Malone type of player not Shaq. Ben is who was brought in. Ben is who started over him not Tomi. Morez was a fill it 5, just like Coleman was the past 4 years. JW does know the story as u mention but so do some on here. All I can say is money talks!Last year, TSJ, Coleman, Domask, Guerrier, Goode, Harmon all graduated. BU wanted to upgrade/recruit over Sincere, Hansberry (who had back issues) Ty and DGL, so Chester quit and took Hanberry and Sincere with him. We recruited over Ty (with Tre) so he redhirted. He had the important retention from the prior year - TSJ and Coleman _ and got to the Elite 8.
I am sure JW knows exactly what happened with Morez - and 98% of you on this board do not.
Guarantee that it wasn't because Ben started. Morez was a 5 - he was recruited over with Tomi, who turned out to be a very good player, probably MVP of the team.
The statements from the father just seems like an excuse to take the bigger bag than Illinois was offering. Morez is worth more to other teams than to Illinois, because we focus on a 5 out style. Like Ty or Dain, Morez is just not the right player for that scheme. Maybe he could have been if given the chance - maybe he could shoot 35% from 3 on volume.
Not sure we get Tomi back, but only because he may go to the NBA. That would be three guys to the NBA - and again, how do you retain those guys?
As for everyone complaining that we still have Hamer, and TU, it is still early. JW and BU will be having a lot of conversations. I don't see BU letter a problem fester, if there is a problem. Will leave that up to JW, because he actually knows something about what is really happening - not basing his opinions off of message board hot takes.
To BU’s credit, they did seem to shift the offensive approach towards the end of Feb.I think that’s exactly it. Very few big men are going to want to play in a 5 out offense. With no post ups, nothing. Morez simply being a garbage man for a team that shoots 30 3s a game isn’t what he signed up for.
I agree. I would like to see a coach that has schemes to fit the players we have. Having set plays where everyone works together to get each other open I would think would make everyone feel more involved/utilized as opposed to just standing around outside the 3 pt line. My issue with the Kofi comment is that if you didn’t want to end up like him then why come here to begin with? Refresh my memory did he already sign a LOI prior to Kofi leaving? Kofi did get a banner hung….Note just adding this to your comment. Anyone who thinks Morez was only recruited to rebound and dunk is sadly wrong. Yes I do believe he signed during Kofi's time here. Also these kids don't care about having a banner hung, all they set their sites on is playing in the NBA. I loved Kofi but but it was clear he would never play there. One dimensional player. Morez was promised and wanted more, oh an extra bag of cash for papa.I agree. We are Iowa now.Dix here for a visit … We’re looking to close … Personally - I don’t understand this one … But that’s just me … Talk is it’ll take $2 million for him …
Sandfort in for a visit soon as well … I don’t understand this one either …
Boswell has heard from multiple teams back channeling and offering nearly 7 figures to him …
Tre White has quite a few good offers on the table …
Continue to hear Brad wants Ben back …
If Duke can’t land Nate Ament … They will be all in on Dame Sarr and we could lose him at the last second … I think we’re in a good spot but Duke is going to come after him hard …
How much was Ben NIL? Booth nil? What’s the gap with Hawkins (plus add roster filler with very low nil). Mil? Now you’re asking boosters this year to pony up for the same with Morez/tomi.So just to get this straight:
1. Coleman Hawkins got $ 2 million from KSU and this board largely agreed that this was a vast overpay.
2. Morez got backchanneled an offer of around that same amount, and I guess we think he is totally worth it? Is that where we are at?
Observation: this board's valuation of players is wildly inconsistent, and seems to be largely based on other factors such as "BU didn't get us to the S16 so I'm still mad at him."
3. Morez took the better offer. Good on him. But it looks like he is justifying this by trashing the program on the way out. Adam Miller didn't do this. Skyy Clark didn't do this. Majority of the board is OK with this though, apparently.
4. He apparently wants to shoot more 3s and his dad thinks we should have let Kofi, Dain, and Ty shoot more 3s.
Observation: His dad should never be hired as an AC to run our offense. Kofi is in his 3rd season of pro ball and is still not getting the green light to shoot 3s. He is, as far as I can tell from highlights I've seen, playing pretty much the same game he did here. Dain didn't shoot a single 3 at Baylor and attempted one at Memphis, which he missed. I think the staff evaluation was OK there and is likely correct on Rez as well.
I mean, this sucks. No doubt. But I'm not sure what the staff was supposed to do. It looks like Rez was coming back, until he got offered nearly 2 mil. I don't know if we had the opportunity to match, but if we were and declined, I wouldn't fault it. And if he wanted to basically play like Tomi I wouldn't fault our staff for telling him no. I have a hard time believing Rez was secretly a perimeter threat and yet was the only guy on the roster not getting a green light. I'm sure the staff would have loved for him to have that as part of his game, but that it just wasn't there.
Nah, it wouldn't. There isn't really a magical individual contract-by-contract legal workaround here. You can't contract to say "you aren't allowed to leave and sign a contract with anyone else", and if you just say "you don't get paid anything unless you're still here in a year", players will obviously just go to where they can get paid now.
What you need is a collective bargaining agreement with some unit of schools, which bypasses antitrust law and allows the conference/federation/whatever to say (as all the pro sports do), you may not sign a player who is under contract with another team.
