We need to start realizing that all these roster churning are not just NIL based,it’s easy to blame the players for just looking for more money, being to 3 schools in 3 years…retaining players also has to do with relationships. You for the most part going to keep your players the same way you got them based on trust ,respect, money and good relationships.
99% is because of NIL and the ability to transfer without consequences. Coaches can't hold players accountable or do anything that makes a player's family feel like they are being screwed over or they can just transfer and get more money. All a player has to do is say "I'm being paid this amount here at Illinois" and Kansas says "pft. You are worth more then that. We will give you this amount" and off they go.

our offense was only possible because our rebounding was dominant. Our best rebounder was Morez Johnson. KJ was a great rebounding guard, and Tre White was our #4 rebounder.

So we better shoot a whole hell of a lot better than 31% from 3 if we aren't going to be #2 in the nation in rebounding.
Curious how you failed to mention Tomi’s rebounding. And you don’t think a #4 rebounder can’t be replaced?

Let me put in a sentence- Underwood doesn't build the type of culture and rapport with players that inclines them to want to keep playing for him... There is such a massive difference in the culture of our football and women's basketball program than in our men's basketball program- and it's a big time problem.

But please, do add your own version of what you think the them is (I'd love to hear it)
He clearly does with some of the players. There is clearly favoritism playing a role here.

#2,781
Come on. Everyone has his number. They will certainly be calling him in the future, and he will be there for them. /s

If Brad Underwood plays Morez as much as he should have played, none of this happens. Period. That is on the coaching and staff. Anyone else arguing otherwise needs to wake up.

Why should players show loyalty when coaches and programs don't, especially a program who has shown they will never hesitate to replace incumbents if they think they can "upgrade". Future promises be damned-those are just words. What would inhibit Brad from treating Morez's playing time the exact same way in '25/'26 as he did this szn?

Morez was insulted by Ben playing over him. That (plus the bag he is about to get) is ultimately what drove him away. And I don't fault him 0%, as much as it sucks and as awesome as I know he is going to be at his next stop.

Who's got the Tylenol?
Ummmmm did you notice when Morez was getting in games he collected fouls like they were gold. Morez held himself back. Plus BU had to win games. Morez was a liability

I think I tend to agree with you.. Problem is, whatever role you're in, you shouldn't be showing favoritism. It's impossible to make everyone happy, I fully acknowledge that.. But he seems to be making the majority salty, not happy

Is it coincidence thst the two big 10 teams that played best and went farthest use the portal least and have little turnover? Michigan state and purdue
How many 5 star recruits does Matt Painter have on his roster. He's a believer in system recruits and development. Our fans here would want to DESTROY Brad if he didn't bring in a top 15 class with NBA prospects.

Izzo does the same thing. You don't see MSU chasing one and dones. He's a system guy that is only interested in guys who commit to the program and not the NBA after one year.

Our fans wouldn't accept that style of recruiting. This off-season is a great example. Here we are again with our main targets who want to be drafted in a year. What do you expect is going to happen?

How many players off of Purdue are going to be drafted? They'll be back for year four because they committed to the program, not the NBA.

Our fans would absolutely lose their minds with an off-season like that. They have coaches that don't believe in the portal and lean on development.

That's not us. We're chasing Dame Sarr and are trying to come up with 7 figures to bring other transfers in.

1. Boswell
2. Conwell
3. Dix
4. Sarr
5. Tomi

6. Ty
7. Humer
8. Jake Davis

This fits what Underwood / Tyler want and believe from an offensive perspective. It makes sense with shooting and positional size. Which Underwood constantly says. I don’t hate it at all. Defense is a worry but we will see.
We’ll see how close to reality this ends up being. Are you using the old tried and true cover your eyes and start throwing darts? 🎯

whole lotta what-ifs there

Why don't we focus on what actually happened instead?

Concerned? Well past that point. Healthy organizations done have turnover like that. And we know it isn't just money, because we've had it with coaches, too.
This might be borderline hostile work environment at the very least.

The offense was only good this year because they dominated offensive rebounding which leads to a ton of high percentage second chance looks. The team's scheme actually kind of sucked. They basically just missed a lot of threes and as we saw in the RO32, turned it over a lot. I'm not giving the Assistant Coach credit for a lot of offensive rebounds. That's a personnel thing more than any X and O.

Our offensive scheme included an emphasis on attacking the offensive glass

You aren't going to give credit for the scheme that was implemented?

In my experience, promoting or hiring people that are not qualified is demoralizing to the team, doesn’t matter if it is at a Fortune 500 company or a basketball team. When you combine it with a leader who doesn’t differentiate himself very well, you get what we see.
IMO, coaches need to stand out in the following ways (elite coaches will have multiple qualities):
1. X’s & O’s
2. Relationship builder/recruiting
3. Legacy/legend
4. Money maker (booster relationships)
5. Elite talent evaluator (coaches and players)

Where does Brad stand out? He was one Michigan denied acceptance and one phone call from another coach/tv host about booty ball from a ho-hum season last year, IMO.
lol this is just hilarious. You can literally say that about anything and anyone in this universe. You are one little fast swimmer beating the others…from not getting born in this world.

College basketball is one of the most volatile sports. It’s all about maximizing your odds. And you have to be good and lucky in this business

It seems like majority of players do not like playing for Brad. In an offseason where retention meant promise, we’ve been given turnover thus far. It’s just nutty.
Agree...I wonder why? Insert "fart-noise" response when asked by a reporter about one of his players.

clearly the reason he's transferring is to get away from whistle happy big ten refs. the rest was all smoke and mirrors.

This just isn't fun. I realize the era is an era of transfers, but it's painful to watch us have turnover above and beyond the league average, and generally not in a way that improves the team.
Last year in the portal we lost:

Luke Goode
Coleman Hawkins
Sencire Harris
Amani Hansberry
Nico Moretti
Dain Dainja
Brandon Lieb

Only one of those players played in the NCAA tournament this year.

The previous year we lost

RJ Melendez
Jayden Epps
Skyy Clark
Benjamin Bosman Verdonk

Two of those players never again played in the NCAA tournaments. The other two had to transfer to a third team for that to happen.

Even before that we lost

Adam Miller
Andre Curbelo
Jacob Grandeson

Miller and Curbelo flamed out at multiple schools. Grandeson rode the bench for Duke. He did see tourney action though.

So you’ll excuse me when I don’t wring my hands over players going out when those coming in have all had consistent trips to the NCAA Tournament. I mean, Tre White’s only tourney experience came this year. I’m pretty sure he’s replaceable.

Whatever the real issues are, it's clear they have created a culture problem. Culture keeps players and employees invested and more likely to stay. Culture is also important in building consistency and teamwork. We struggle with all of these.

Brad's program is the co-winningest in the conference in recent years, and that's great. It's probably directly tied to the massive increase in talent level since he took over and since donors could be more directly involved.

But raw talent alone may win lots of games, but it doesn't win championships. I'm fairly confident that Brad can keep winning lots of games. I'm increasingly unconfident than he can consistently win championships (B1G or higher).

Losing Tim Anderson and Chester Frazier were much bigger losses than anyone wanted to admit, both from a relationship with standpoint and in terms of roster management and overall strategy. Replacing Tim and Chester with Tyler and his friend as yes men leaves just Antigua to check Brad, and that is a problem.

I hope people are now joining me on my season grade of a D. No banners. No second weekend. No guarantees that anyone important returns. Honestly other programs in the conference have to laugh about the video where Brad says we’re the toughest team. Everyday guys is complete trash at this point. Illi-bleeping-nois. Kylan and Tomi really need to come back to have anything to build upon.
Not joining the emotional overreaction.

Still a B for this season. Plus whatever happens this offseason is on next season’s grade

I'm just throwing this out there even though I don't believe in Ben and I don't want to keep Hamer-

Starting next year there will be 15 total scholarship roster spots, does it really matter if one goes to Ben in a non-starter role? The Illini under Underwood have been pretty lean roster-wise, so lean we use the transfer portal to get walk-ons.

Before we get rid of Hamer, we still have Kwa occupying Tim Anderson's spot. Do people just assume Brad will demote Kwa back down? Is that a done deal? Because I feel like I haven't seen enough talk on the concerning possibility that Kwa is keeping that spot and a real indication of the coaching clown show.
