Something about this off season feels more ominous than the last up to this point. I am very aware things can change quickly and recruiting is fluid but the vibe is just a bit off.
Coming off an E8 season will certainly have you fired up. The vibes I feel now is that of a patient in hospice care. Things can definitely change quickly, but there seems to be the reality that we are slowly slipping from top tier of the B1G. Two of the last 3 years we were mid pack, and we are trending for another mid pack year unless something changes fast.

That tends to happen when there is crazy roster turnover year in and out. We were supposed to return a core for next year, and that core is shaping up to be one or two tops. I understand why there is a general level of skepticism right now.

I wanted him last year … Many people said he wouldn’t be good enough …

Sure could’ve used him off the bench … Not a 3 point shooter but we don’t need him to be …

I want him again this year …

Wasn't this Storr's friend?

This "meeting" is going to be the stuff of legends.

"I heard that Josh told Brad its your kid or its you"

"I heard that Brad said he's untouchable and Josh can't do anything about it"

"I heard TA told them he can shut Illinois out of Chicago recruiting for good"

"I heard Bryce Hopkins was there"

"I heard Kofi slapped Morez Sr. across the face"

"I heard all the remaining players came in and placed their jerseys on Josh's desk"
I heard it really could've been an email.

So our path to success is poaching mediocre players from a program that was mediocre last year?

Under 60% at the rim & mediocre free throw rate as a non threat shooter. Also 2nd worst defensive impact on NC State per EvanMiya/Torvik and had a lower assist rate than Dain Dainja, we can certainly do better

About this time last year we were down to DGL and a redshirting TY, wondering if BU could round up enough bodies put five on the court. By late summer we were counting the number of lottery picks we had signed and clearing out room for multiple trophies in the trophy case. We'll be fine when the dust settles.

They’re familiar with each other …

Speaking of Storr … If the number I’ve heard he is after is true … I’d consider it …
Hmm it depends on what his mindset is after this step-back year. If he's hungry to prove himself..? Maybe. Would really want to be careful, though. But he's skilled and athletic, so that counts for a bit, if the price is right...

This is no disrespect to Indy, but not having a balance of insiders due to the behaviors of some on this site can potentially skew the overall pulse on what's happening. I'm not saying Indy is wrong. I'm saying there are different perspectives each bring to the site. I appreciate them all.
I was thinking the same thing.

Each Insider is a very valuable piece of the puzzle but only a piece. A more complex picture emerges the pie ces you have.

If Brad is checked out, I can understand why.

This past year was a complete rebuild. He lost an All-American, a B1G first team guy, a couple of seniors, then a few more through the transfer portal.

So what did he do? He goes out and builds a team that’ll stick around a few years.

I’m sure he figured he’d get:

- 2 years out of Morez
- 2 years out of Tre
- 2 years out of Ivisic
- 2 years out of Boswell
- 2 years out of Ben (with the rule change)
- 2 years of our Jake
- Maybe 2 years of our Riley
- Plus at the time he was thinking another 2 years out of Ty

It was a smart plan. You take your lumps in year 1, then year 2 is a F4 type season.

Sure, you lose your star I’m KJ, but you replace him in the portal, and you’re off to the races.

Then you likely lose Riley to the draft.

Plus, you lose Morez and Tre to the portal. I’m sure he’s partly to blame for that, but it’s also a new NIL world, where a guy like Morez is now worth $2m.

And all of a sudden, it’s another complete rebuild and we likely have less resources than some of our peers (if we didn’t, we would’ve just matched the offer for Morez).

So I can understand it if Brad is tired/burnt out/checked out. I would be too.

But—like someone else said, the show must go on. Brad’s gotta get his head in the game or else next season could be ugly.
This is excellent analysis. I'd even say prior to KJ getting here, I doubt the staff thought he was a surefire lottery pick. Everything about this years team felt like it would build itself into an excellent team next year. I find myself for the first time ever as a diehard Illinois basketball fan the most discouraged and apathetic as I've ever been. I mean, what am I even rooting for anymore? 1 year rental mercenaries that sign no contract, show no allegiance to the university, could care less about wearing Illinois on their jersey, and bounce the moment stuff gets hard? Shoot, what is college basketball anymore?

Jeremy Werner hit the nail on the head in his recent podcast when he said that prep recruiting is essentially dead. That to me is such an indictment on the current state of college basketball. And while all of this stuff sucks- the last thing Underwood can do is check out and put his head in the sand. He's not paid millions of dollars to do that
