Totally fine with this result. We have money and space for a better, more complete player
Like who though? I'm not saying Dix would've been some demigod portal hit... but we keep saying this and don't have any names in return. We need a proven, scoring guard that's a no doubt starter type guy alongside Kylan. (and also no... Storr would not be that. Would like that one as an additional, not as what you'd consider the "marque get")

16.9p 6.1rb 5.5a That's some statline he's got there.

Edit: And I see a triple dub against Penn with 23p 10rb 12a

Yup that stat line is reminiscent of another guy we had this year (except the TOV number is way better (2.2 compared to 3.7)

How on earth did we get out-bid by Creighton?

We don't have infinite money, so the staff has to balance priorities and value. Even if Illinois is among the top 15 or so programs overall on NIL, that doesn't mean individual players aren't valued by other programs enough to put them over what we would. Storr was a great example of Illinois bowing out, and yet they got Will, KJ, and Kylan.

Well there’s the mystery 4 that’s been hinted at for a while. Could be Quaintance maybe but I’m not sure. Supposedly someone OA has been working on.

I’m curious to learn what the pivot will be.
Quaintance wasn't the mystery PF that was hinted at given he's a big fish that everyone is after, I got the sense it was a more under the radar type guy ,but I agree, given we have a lot of resources to throw at a big fish, I'd rather get a guy like Quaintance who would have huge upside and is already a great defender, rebounder, shot blocker inside, which would pair well with Big T

I feel like we can find a good SG who is a good 3pt shooter for much less than Dix

Not sure I see paying $2,000,000 for proven player production as overpaying, especially when this offense thrives when they make 3s at a high clip. I don’t get spreading the funds for some kind of 8-9 deep roster of which 2-3 will likely leave for another program next year. Seems like a better use of funds to pay studs and play 7 deep.

I doubt a kid like this enters the portal without knowing where he's going.

Not meaning to be argumentative in any way, but just wondering why you would think this? He does not have a no-contact tag.

"like this" <-- Like what, exactly? Is he too good or something?

I mean, I think 90% of the kids in the portal probably have some sort of list in mind before they enter

Watching a few highlights and looks like the game is similar too.

I would love to have had that shooter from Iowa (notice how I avoided the double entendre). He's a very good offensive weapon and he'll fit perfectly into Creighton's style of play, as he would have with the Illini. I am not the biggest proponent of Storr, if he ends up being Plan B, C or D, but I do believe he has great ability if someone can channel it into a team concept. That's a big IF. The fact that he allegedly is on the sale rack this time makes him a more interesting item if he's as a complementary piece. I'm one of those people that won't buy a Powerball ticket unless the prize gets to be a billion (as if a few million wouldn't help a bit). Storr may be a good small lotto gamble as long as the price is right.

It’s a tough game. If it’s true that Dix is $2M, I’m not sure you get your ROI there. But you have to be able to pivot and get someone else with the resources you have. If you don’t then you should have overpaid for Dix.

Will we have to find a KJ type late in the process like we did last year?

Yeah, Kentucky is already involved with Lee and he's going to test the NBA draft waters, so maybe he won't be any cheaper than Dix - but I'd much rather have him than Dix just given his skill set and having 2 PG's on the floor at the same time

2 million is a lot of money for a guy like Dix. However, if there is no one better in the Portal, then I'd rather have Dix than nobody.

Having typed that, I am assuming there is/will be someone better in the Portal than Dix. I don't want Storr in a primary role; in other words, Storr for Dix is not an option, imo. Storr is a bench player that the Illini got a good deal on. That is how I view him.

How on earth did we get out-bid by Creighton? No offense to them, but if we really want a guy, we shouldn't ever lose them to Creighton.

Obviously a motivated fan base willing to contribute NIL funds, I imagine not having a football team to compete for donor money helps quite a bit as well.

But to your second point, Creighton has a little under 10,000 undergrad and post grad students every year, while U of I has over 55,000. So despite the passion of Bluejays fans, I see no reason Illinois should not be able to overwhelm their NIL amount.

Rumors had been that we were willing to match any NIL number presented by other schools, but I take @DB11Headband's comment about mom's getting what they want to mean that being so close to home was the tiebreaker for the Dix camp.

waiting on the gritty i told you so
I didn't, not really. Dix seemed plausible to me. I just said we weren't getting all of Dix, Sellers and Sarr, which was far too obvious to gloat over.

We'll be fine.
