He’s exactly what we need as the 4th piece in front court … Athletic … Good defender … Willing rebounder …

One of the few kids on that UC team that didn’t quit …
Would he be willing to accept that role? And would there be minutes for both him and Ty? My main concern would be that those 2 would be a bit redundant.

Never forget Trailblazers 1977 NBA champions

They had no chance of winning to due lack of "athleticism" compared to 76ers uber athletes

Lionel Hollins - World B Free
Dave Twardzik vs Doug Collins All Star HOF
Bill Walton HOF vs Caldwell Jones/Darryl Dawkins
Maurice Lucas vs George McGinnis (ABA MVP) HOF
Bobby Gross vs Dr J All Star HOF

Trailblazers were great basketball team with one of best basketball players of all time Bill Walton
76ers were collection of great athletic all stars

Lesson - Bet on basketball players and basketball team. Not individuals.

If we had Houston’s roster, there would be a message board orgy going on.

Houston had a lot of athletes. The last 2 minutes of that game their 5 super athletes looked like 5 chickens with their heads cut off and they didn’t even come close to a competent offensive possession. You need both.
Ummmmm.....but they were playing for a National Championship and led for 38 minutes and 57 seconds against a team that pretty much steamrolled everybody.

Well they are 67-10 over the last 2 years, so the statistics say I will take that bet and twice on Sunday. Reality meet hyperbole.
I will also add the Houston defense is another level. I still remember the last time Illinois played Houston.

. . . which means we wont get him.

sorry for the pessimism, do we have a real shot here?

Can I ask, honestly, how we quantify athleticism? There's a lot of discussion of who is more athletic than whom and team athleticism, but what does that even mean?

How many centibirds of athleticism were TSJ? Jakucionis? Dee Brown?

How many birds of athleticism did our team last year have? What about Houston? Duke?
Houston, Duke, Auburn, and Florida clearly had better athletes on their teams that the 2024 - 2025 Illini. Houston and Florida both had players on the floor (maybe not starters) at times that could not shoot, but could back people down and rebound. Check their player statistics on free throw shooting. Also, you did not see a lot of Houston big men (defined as 6 foot 8 inches and smaller) jacking up 3's. Sampson won't allow them to do that if they can't shoot. However, Houston "big men" were certainly capable defenders and rebounders.

They certainly had more talent than we did. But they didn't really have someone who was good enough to create their own offense and that killed them in that game.

In 1964, United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart once famously said about obscenity, “I know it when I see it”.

I think this is a good metric for athleticism. We know it when we see it. And so do defenders when their man blows right past them to the hole and makes them look silly and robotic.

At this point the only way to salvage this offseason would be for Will to come back.
Underwhelming roster construction to say the least.
This won't be a popular take but i would rather see the Illini get a guy like Jamir Watkins than Riley come back.

I think a big wing like Watkins(or someone else) that can play on the perimeter but has the size and strength to play and guard inside(think how Duke used Flagg basically as their 4, Watkins isn't flag but think role wise) would be the best fit for the roster.

Add Watkins, Sarr, and Storr to the current group and I'd start Boswell, Sarr, Ty, Watkins, and Tomi while bringing Storr, Big Z, and Mirkovic off the bench.
