Okay, for kicks and grins, let's say Illinois is running out of money to give to transfers and can only add Adam Miller and Dame Sarr to next year's roster. This is the team:

Boswell
Miller
Sarr
Mirkovic
Tomi
---
Ty
Z
Jake
Wagler
Lee
Jakstys

Is that a B1G title contender? I'd say definitely not.

Is it a top-25 team? No.

So what does the staff do to improve the roster if there's no money to be had? Or do they roll the dice and hope they can coach them up? I've seen that movie before, and it doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. Undy must think his seat is ice cold heading into next season.
That's a pretty good top 7...should be Top 25 caliber

Not a Top 25 team???

I guess we'll see but that also looks like a team outside of the top 25 to me. The nice thing is that this is quantifiable so in due time we'll see what the national peeps think about us.

Miller was like the 5 or 6th best player on a bad team last year. Him at the 2 is a gaping hole, IMO.

Mirkovic at the 4 is also pretty weak.

While Sarr looks like he might be a stud. We're clearly lacking a pre-season AA's that Brad typically has on his team.

If Sarr is on this team, that is a very, very good basketball team. I am EXTREMELY bullish on Tomi and Boswell. I expect them both to be All-Conference type guys. Or as Pru would say, “I really, really do…”

That would be a top 25 team for sure, but they will add three more pieces. It kinda depends on the timeline. If they can get Miller and a big piece in the next couple of weeks, you can save money for Sarr if he decides later. If you wait and see someone like Sarr later, they might lock up Miller along with a solid but nothing insanely high priced guy plus Sarr. Regardless they will add three more, maybe 4 if Ben doesn't come back (think he will).

The team could be great or horrible at this point. Ask Kansas how good they thought last year's team was heading into the season. There's something to be said for chemistry and closeness as a team.

The Adam Miller takes are wild to me.

Where...ANYwhere has it been suggested by anyone in the know that Miller is coming in to start, play 35 minutes a game and be the #1 option?

That, and half the board is still butthurt that he left...YEARS ago and now will hang it over his head like he personally, deeply offended them....and also that his agent is demanding 5 million and your first child to play here.

All that has ever been presented is that he would come for guard depth, experience and shooting.

I am all for that, and you should be too.

Felt like 60.

Hey this guy is a killer in the mid range... It's basically a layup if we let him shoot from 8-12 feet uncontested. - scouting report

I declare drop coverage! - hamer probably
Yes our defense basically let him drive through the lane uncontested due to Hamer's defensive plan.

People are also maybe forgetting why we paid Tomi (twice).
I feel like a lot of misjudgments (including undervaluing getting our guys to return) come back to not grasping the general principle that basketball players get better as they age up through at least their late 20's.

You watch one of those transfer portal highlight videos of college guys and have some grasp on the level of competition. But the adult pro teams from elite global leagues that Sarr and Mirkovic are playing against in their videos would blow Purdue off the floor.

That’s a fringe top 25 as is and with another piece at the 2 spot and sliding Ace to the 6th man role, it’s a lock top 25 team …

Two outcomes to me:

One stud + two solid role players
Two studs + one solid role player

Depending on timing imo. Either way, we are going to be very good.

Depending on $$$ as well …

Agree on the outcomes …

Also agree we’re going to be good again … Question is how good … Competing for Big Ten and 2nd weekend is the expectation this year …

I may be the only one here, but I hope Ben returns. I think he will be more comfortable with a year in the system and I think his three-point percentage will go up a little bit. Really good depth piece and he can be a contributor if he’s used properly. 15 minutes or so most nights, and if he has it going in a particular game you up his minutes accordingly.

The team with a legit NBA wing and two all-conference level players isn’t T25?

Ben would be a really good addition to this squad, as long as he is good with a reduced role. He filled some decent minutes late in the year as a small ball 5 or 4. And regardless of his percentages, defenses have to go out and guard him.

I would like Ben back (at right price) for insurance, old and continuity. We would have 6 back - Kylan, Tomas, Ty, Jake, Jaksys, Ben, plus 1 prodigal son Adam.

We would have 5 new- big Z, Mircovic, Lee and Kagan plus a portal 2G. Maybe Sarr

We would also be pretty old Kylan SR, Tomas JR, Ty RS JR, Jake JR Ben grad, Adam Covid grad Big Z JR. That is 7 upperclassmen. Last year we had two upper classmen Kylan and Ben.

Normally I would agree on the Mirkivic kid as I had never seen him play, but I saw him play with some of the best HS players in the US and the best international players. To me he looked very serviceable and in my opinion was one of the best 3-5 players on the floor. He really did a lot of things very well. He is not some great athlete, but that does mean he will not be a very solid B10 players. I guess what I am saying is, seeing him live made me much more confident he will be a help to us.

(Not you, Ben)
Put me in the camp, and I just might need a pup tent for one, that would love to see BH return.

First, he did not earn a pay raise, or even a big role on next season's roster. But......... having watched him shoot, his technique is exceptional....but his confidence is not. Too often his shot was on line but off the heel due to a flat arc..... and that too often a result of firing away from 30 rather closer where he could loft it more easily.

Every one of us saw his motor improve, his defensive effort improve, and his rebounding improve in the last couple of months. Just how many 6'9" guys are their in high school or the portal who can hit over 40% from the arc anyway while guarding speedy perimeter players and banging for boards?

BH has that potential and could be a huge part of team success next year if he continues to improve and gets his confidence back. With some hard work (what else would he be doing?) and without the pressure to fire away, he can become more selective and comfortable....and especially if he becomes efficient in those 8 ft. faders while playing booty ball.

The only drawback that would need big improvement is his ability to guard quick drivers without fouling. His rebounding efforts became pretty solid and that would need to continue. If BU sees that will never happen, then he will always be a defensive liability as smart coaches, especially B1G coaches, will make him switch onto quick drivers and pay the price if he can't move his feet. But there is something about a last shot at redemption that brings out the best in guys who love to compete. Both BH and AM are of that ilk and I would like to see them both redeemed.
