Sorry just can't agree with this assessment of Petrovic. MVP candidate of a pro league is not unproven.
Like most, I like Petrovic’s game. Going off of this year with KJ and Tomi, I see a big difference in physicality from the European league to major college basketball. I think Petrovic will have a major adjustment. Tomi still has a ways to go. I’m not worried about Mirkovic.

This might be a dumb question, but do head coaches contribute out of their own pocket for guys? Head coaches make a ton. Seems like if you really want to win, and have job security on a top tier program, you probably would.

A couple have given to their NIL collective....but normally no....the people donating make way more than college coaches do. A donation worth anything would be 1mil+....that would essentially be 1/5th of Brad's salary before taxes.

If the coach had to do that, then he/she is in a ton of trouble. At the top tier programs being able to work with the mega donors is a must (in addition to being able to actually coach). This would be such a large red flag if that had to happen for the sake of getting a top talent. Also, given the current market, there is no way a coach makes enough money to even be able to bring in one player alone on their own pay.

wouldn't be that much different than an officer of a public company buying stock in their company.

Still feel we will go after a veteran SG type with positional size/athleticism to start. If we are a top 2 seed NCAA bid, seems that is what is missing.
Other than the "veteran" part, maybe our incoming freshmen may fill your bill.

I do not see that equivalency at all. An officer buying company stock is designed solely to help their own personal pocket.

It would be more like the CEO investing his personal money/salary to help cover a large purchase order. Can he do that...sure, but it would likely mean that there are other issues happening at the organization.

A good run by Illinois will result in an Underwood contract extension / raise

Lets say Boogie is available but funds are tight. Underwood ponies up the difference. Fast forward to March and another E8 or F4 run lands Underwood a hefty payday. Definitely a cause-and-effect potential.

If anyone was curious, the same drama we deal with is pretty common across the board now a days.

Alex Karaban went back and forth multiple times over the last few months to the start about staying. Putting them in a tough spot.

He finally says privately he is coming back over the weekend, but delays announcement 3 times over 3 days because of NIL negotiations. All for the NBA early entry/combine list to leak today and him not be on it, forcing him to announce just now that he is coming back after all.

Just how it goes now a days

And because he officially back, rumors of other players on the team wanting to leave now. Not sure how that works with the portal being closed and all.

I meant uproven in college basketball - a lot of European players come over and have a tough time adjusting to the speed and physicality of the league, etc. We were spoiled with KJ and Tomi last year. Having said that, I do trust the staff's evals and maybe they are just better at this than other coaches. Specifically for Petrovic - I think the ball handling and passing translate right away to college. The areas that are more difficult to determine are his ability to finish at the rim if he's closer to 6'1" and not a great leaper, he finishes at the rim really well right now, but might not have that area of his game in college, his jump shot might be more difficult to get off with less space/bigger guards guarding him, he may not be able to get around his man as easily as he does now. On defense he might not be able to stay in front of quicker PG's and he can really only guard PG's, bigger guards might post him up and take the size advantage

Best case - his game all translates and he's a KJ type player for us next year, facilitator, scorer and average defender
Worse case - he's a good facilitator but can't really create his own offense and is a liability on defense, so he plays a rotational role than starting PG

My point is - I don't want to bet the season on our starting PG being the best case of translating his skills to the college game, I'd rather have one more scorer in the fold to lean on
