This might be a dumb question, but do head coaches contribute out of their own pocket for guys? Head coaches make a ton. Seems like if you really want to win, and have job security on a top tier program, you probably would.
It's technically not allowed by the NCAA for coaches to make contributions to NIL funds. A couple of football coaches have gotten around it by contributing to fundraising in other ways that can get funnelled to NIL, but yes, this would happen more often if it was allowed.

Technical foul! No counting allowed in the recruiting thread.
What!?! No Counting? I think you are taking the "Don't count on it" mantra too literally.

And because he officially back, rumors of other players on the team wanting to leave now. Not sure how that works with the portal being closed and all.
If I recall correctly, there was a player either last year or the year before who transferred to another school after the portal closed and was still able to play immediately — basically implying that the portal itself is a mere formality, much like how a wedding ceremony isn’t needed to actually be married. I’m not sure if that loophole has closed, but at least at one point it was possible.

A good run by Illinois will result in an Underwood contract extension / raise

Lets say Boogie is available but funds are tight. Underwood ponies up the difference. Fast forward to March and another E8 or F4 run lands Underwood a hefty payday. Definitely a cause-and-effect potential.
If every coach in the top 25 did this then 17-21 would be SOL on their ROI.

Brad's already the 8th highest paid coach. You get a raise if you get to the final 4 or better. Extension, sure...

Dame Sarr didn’t even enter his name in the draft huh. That seems surprising

this made me check out some mock drafts, and this one has dame at #17: https://nbadraftroom.com/2026-nba-mock-draft/

any mock this early is a crapshoot, but it also has tomi right behind him at #18. morez checks in at #38 and andrej at #63, just outside the draft. obviously a lot will change.

edit: yeah, these are all so random at this point. this one has tre white going in the second round, which . . . sure, maybe, but z going and tomi not? doubt it: https://www.nbadraft.net/nba-mock-drafts/?year-mock=2026

Who do you think has the second-best roster after Purdue? I feel on paper, USC, Wisconsin, MSU, Michigan, and UCLA all have pretty good rosters.

Think Purdue, Illinois, Michigan, UCLA have the most talent … In that order …

USC needs another piece and they’d be in that tier … If they kept Claude they easily would’ve been in that tier …

A team I actually think could surprise some people next year … Washington …

Hi gents, I'm new on the board but a long time reader and avid illini fan. I keep seeing posters put up starting lineups and minute distributions and just had to comment.

Underwood has exactly one team that played beyond the first weekend in NCAA tourny. One very prominent player from that team is still on the team. He took a year off to work on his deficiencies and came back for this season. Do you really believe he will play less minutes this season than 2 years ago. Ty Rodgers is a Damn dog and winner. The only reason the illini falls short this season is if Ty plays the minutes I've seen posted here. I love the talent Underwood brings in but I question his coaching often. Hopefully he realizes how important Rodgers is to this team.
Ty played in every game as a freshman and started every game as a sophomore. He then spent all of last year as a redshirt supporting a team that seemed to have somewhat lost its identity as to the Every Day Guy Culture Brad wants for his program. He was in the top ten in offensive rebounding in the Big Ten as a sophomore on a Final 8 team playing out of position for much of the season as a point guard with no outside shot often guarding much smaller, quicker point guards. Fletch has had an entire year to work with him and I suspect Ty has lived in the gym working on his shot so some improvement is a reasonable expectation. I am at a loss to understand how anyone can believe that he won't be an essential part of the rotation, no matter who has been added to the roster. He may not always start, but Brad will play him the minutes of a starter.

If anyone's curious or has the time to watch, found the full game between Mirkovic's team and Petrovic's team ...

Petrovic #77 in pink, Mirkovic #70 in white (I think) ...

Thanks for posting, good preview of a couple of our players - count me in for wanting Luka B in Orange and Blue - good shooter, looks big ten ready now, will be 22 when the season starts, exactly the type of scoring off the bench we could use if we don't land a big transfer fish
