Tomi is the first player I've ever heard of being "ruled" an older class upon entering college. The rules always used to be an analysis of whether a European pro team had paid a guy a "salary" beyond basic cost of living, with some fudge factor to have a kid "pay back" some amount to true it up. But it was very much under the theory that if you were a professional basketball player you were not college eligible, period.

I really like the idea of a class-based analysis that puts Europeans where they "belong" in terms of the time they've been playing paid basketball at a post-youth level, but I have not seen a single thing either 1. saying that's actually what they're doing or 2. describing how they are doing that analysis

(And of course it all begs the question of why American pros, especially ones that fail to make NBA rosters, can't come back to access NIL millions. What's the difference between the Adriatic League and the G League? There isn't one.)

Oregon State had a Lithuanian player last year who was ruled a sophomore coming in too. Ruling was announced basically same time as Tomi.

I have to think that could be challenged in court. If the NCAA is saying “okay, your professional career counts against your college eligibility,” a case could be made that all professional work, be it ball player, lawyer, accountant, McDonalds worker, etc…should count against it as well — then argue that such restrictions are arbitrary and therefore illegal.

Won’t happen ….. Penn State has already contacted Josh Whitman and threatened a lawsuit if it happens. Penn State claims they have a copy right on the “White Out” game .

I have seen a lot of discussion regarding Ty Rodgers and how "he started on an Elite Eight team!" but when you look at the minutes they were never quite there in terms of what you expect from a starter. 17.5 MPG Year 1 and 22.7 MPG Year 2. In terms of starters he had highly variable usage and so penciling him at 20 MPG total and not starting seems logical to me given that he wasn't considered good enough for last year's team.

In the 2023-2024 season Ty's 22.7 MPG were the 5th highest on the team so that makes it "starter's minutes" that season. For the 2024-2025 season there were only 6 players that had more than 22.7 MPG, one of whom was Tre White at 23.4 MPG and two of whom, Will Riley and Ben Humrichous, were both at 25.7 MPG so basically 3 of the top 6 were in the same ballpark of MPG as TY's 22.7 and at the very least it would have placed him right in the thick of the rotation as the 7th highest MPG. The very fact that you have him penciled in as filling 20 MPG at 3 different positions off the bench ties him with Mirkovic and Zvonomir as the 5th highest MPG this upcoming season which once again qualifies as "starter's minutes" even though you do not list him as a starter at any of the 3 positions. The added benefit of his versatility to play minutes at the 3 positions you have listed actually increases Ty's value.
As to Ty's "not being good enough for last year's team" I readily acknowledge that he may have been in a dogfight to be a starter over Tre White or Ben H. given the expectations for those portal players but I sure would have liked to have seen the competition take place and over the course of the season I think we may have been better off with his defense, rebounding and EDG mentality since much like 2023-2024 scoring was never the problem.
Ty DID start every game on an Elite Eight team. At most only 5 players can say that for the ILLINI in the last 20 years.
