Pitino told him he wasn’t welcome back …

Also guessing Brett wouldn’t want the kid twisting his ankle up (or something worse, who knows) while running with scout team in bball practice

How do you think Avdala’s game would translate in year 1 of college basketball? Is he a difference maker or just a good cog on a good team if he doesn’t have to be the 1st or 2nd option?
He'd likely need a ball to be effective and useful while results of him having the ball would be at best inconsistent. You'd get flashes of brilliance with some boneheaded turnovers and shot selection so for team like yours, i think he wouldnt really excel there. Important thing for most young prospects are that their progress wont be linear, it will depend on situation he gets put into and his support system, especially for those younger guys who are first time in USA and never been away from home before.

stock answer: that's up to him

Rankin specific: guessing he decides to focus on football after a ~year. it's just too flippin' hard to do both sports and it detracts from your primary one.
I’m guessing the same thing. Think Antwan Randle El for IU back in the day. Play a few mop-up minutes in the latter half of the season then focus solely on FB.

Question about Rankin: given that he has been offered and accepted a football scholarship, does that mean he does not consume a scholarship on the basketball team? He's considered a walk-on?

In both football and basketball there are no longer limits on the amount of scholarships, only a limit on the roster size. Football can have 105 players and basketball 15 players. The teams can decide how many players they want to give a scholarship to.

Before we spend the next 4 pages talking about it, Rankin it not playing basketball.
I could see him being a practice player come January/Feb (of 27 obviously). Maybe he gets some spot minutes if everything aligns.

MSU had some guys play both sports recently. Don’t think they played any meaningful minutes but it’s not a forgone conclusion rankin won’t be apart of the team to some degree.

I think what he's asking is whether since he's receiving a football scholarship, he doesn't need to recieve a second scholarship to play basketball... right?

Many of the journalists and podcasters have casually stated that "Brad Underwood has also offered him a scholarship to play basketball." I think what they mean is that he's offered Rankin a "roster spot." But I'm not 100% sure that's correct.

Years ago, the scholarship spot was to be used by the revenue sport, to prevent football coaches from "storing" a bunch of players on the track team and using their scholarships/roster spots. With regards to football and basketball, I would think that it would only count against football, especially since he intends to play the full football season and then head to bball. All the rules have changed so much, not sure if this is true anymore.

His tweet indicates otherwise. What am I missing?
Nas knows where his “bread will be buttered” and knows where his professional career lies.

But in the meantime, I suspect if he desires to play basketball and it works out with football, he will.

One of the insiders said that he is coming to Ubben center after the high school football season, which means that he is going to skip out on his high school basketball season so take that as you will.

How AWESOME was it to hear AYO narrating his fellow Morgan Park athlete's announcement video and for AYO to attend the actual announcement?
AYO's ongoing commitment and loyalty to ILLINI NATION, especially in Chicago, is incredibly valuable.
What a great Ambassador for the Orange and Blue!
