Re: Sarr…….we were in…the price went up whatever that was fine and then when we found out Stoj was going to enter he became priority 1 for Brad

Hale Irwin was All-Big 8 for Colorado as a safety for the Buffs and won the NCAA golf title as a senior. Also, in the same year Irwin won the golf title, a kid from my hometown in Illinois, a consensus All-State selection in basketball, was the runner-up to Irwin....and two years later was runner-up again for the NCAA Div. 1 title.

It is far more common for a golfer to be successful as a former standout basketball player than a former football standout. There are several PGA Tour players over the years who were recruited for basketball but far fewer football players.

David Lundstrom of Galesburg played in the Elite Eight and played hoops for Bradley. He later qualified for the PGA Tour and played for a couple of seasons or more.

Bottom line is that most guys who are successful as athletes can be successful in several sports because of physical or mental gifts. But today, with so much advancement in knowledge and training methods, they are forced to focus on a single discipline in order to compete at the level they desire. Finding that passion is not always easy, but for those who find it, the work required is never work. Some even find out that winning feeds that passion in a minimal way compared to simply competing consistently with their best effort every time they play.

He'd likely need a ball to be effective and useful while results of him having the ball would be at best inconsistent. You'd get flashes of brilliance with some boneheaded turnovers and shot selection so for team like yours, i think he wouldnt really excel there. Important thing for most young prospects are that their progress wont be linear, it will depend on situation he gets put into and his support system, especially for those younger guys who are first time in USA and never been away from home before.
Thank you man. Good commentary. I appreciate you.

As a kid in Freeport my dad would tell me all about Preston Pearson, and his older brother Rufus. Rufus was supposedly the better athlete but had some personal challenges along the way.

Not a lot of big time athletes are for former Pretzels (Freeport's mascot) so they were revered. Along with Jamal Meeks who was a few years ahead of me and went to play for Bob Knight at Indiana.
Don’t believe Preston played football in college (said he got headaches) but terrific for Cowboys for many years.

Carl Crawford (MLB Hall of Very Good) chose baseball but had basketball scholarship offer to UCLA and many football scholarship offers including USC, Florida, Oklahoma.

Todd Helton was a QB at Tennessee before some guy name Paintin’ Manning replaced him

I knew a man from Monticello (knew his sons too) who was a teammate of Boudreau at Illinois. He lived to be 100 and had a long, successful life in business. Did I mention I'm one of the old guys on this forum?
It is great to hear from an older Illinois sports fan. I am from Lawrenceville, Illinois, and lived down the street from Dennis Shilder Jay's older brother. I have been an Illini fan since 1968. I got a Master's Degree from U of I in 1980 and had basketball seats under the basket in those days.

is Rankin expected to contribute to basketball any amount?

Watkins or Luis would be great additions if team chemistry isn't adversely affected. We could certainly use an athletic, dynamic wing, but would it work with Tomi, Andrej, and Kylan?

Obviously it's irrelevant if the big donors aren't interested or if they (Watkins) stay in the draft.

I first followed the Illini passionately about 1952. My dad took me to a couple of games in old Huff Gym. You could see the action close up, but had to be careful not to get splinters in your !!!. For home games, they were televised by channel 3 (WCIA) with Tom Schoendienst on the call. We didn't have TV, but I had friends who did; I rode my bike through some very cold winter nights.

I, too, grew up watching WCIA channel 3—it was fuzzy and on a black-and-white TV. I also watched the Cubs on WGN and listened to the Cubs on the radio while playing wiffle ball.
