It's the same for Petrovic. A lot of our guys last year were bad to start and then a strong finish (Riley, Boswell). Free throws can oftentimes be an anomaly, and oftentimes resolvable.

Great, my hunch is that he will end up being a real key to a great season seeing how he'll likely reduce PG duties from others like Kylan and TyNo problems with Petrovic. Just going to take a bit more time, but he will be good to go.
Have there been literally ANY signs that there might be an issue with Petra’s eligibility, or are we just reaching for reasons to be miserable?
It’s the second one, isn’t it?

Keonte Jones decommitted from USC and is an absolute junkyard dog. Not much of a shooter but has shot decently from 3 on very low volume but he's a big athletic wing that cleans that glass and averaged 4 assists per game last year. Good defensively and good shot blocker for his sise/position.Ali Dibba, 6'5", a 205-pound Guard from SIU Carbondale is still available via the transfer portal. Dibba played in 33 games (33 starts) this past season for the Salukis, averaging 34.0 minutes/game. Dibba averaged 17.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists. He shot 49.0% on FGS, including 33.7% on 3-pointers, and 66.0% on FTs. This kid has some talent, and he's experienced. I'm not saying he would be a star for the Illini, but he would certainly provide quality depth this coming season. Dibba would be very important if Petrovic has eligibility problems, but even more so if Boswell and/or Petrovic have major injuries during the 24-25 season.

Tyler Mcghie is also in the portal and he's one of the best shooters in the country(maybe the best shooter in the country). Maybe a bit of redundancy with Humrichous and Davis but I think Mcghie is better than both. Not the greatest athlete so may have to hide him a bit on defense but he's can shoot off the dribble, post up guards, and if you want to run an offense where you chuck 3s you could definitely take a guy like this.
the tampering is also often the players rep's calling around looking for a better deal. It’s kind of like calling a foul in a black top pick up game. You can say something about it, but who is going to listen?
I think he compares pretty well to a guy like Isaac Mckneely(or Lee Humphrey if you wanna go back a few years).Best shooter in the country? I had never heard of him and had to go look him up. He barely shot a better % than Ben H last year (3 percentage points higher) in a non major conf and he is 4 inches shorter so would be a 2/3 who would be a liability in every aspect outside of just shooting the ball when he’s wide open. Also, coming from a non-major conf and those players tend to not translate well in year 1 jumping up to power conf play.
I’m not saying you’re wrong (because you’re usually not), but I’d really need you to sell me on this one a bit more.
How is a guy like this not already on a roster for next year? Is he looking for a feature role at a P4 school?I think he compares pretty well to a guy like Isaac Mckneely(or Lee Humphrey if you wanna go back a few years).
He never looked small on the court to me but like a legitimate 6'5(a lot of those guys get listed at 6'6 or 6'7). He's not a great athlete or 1 on 1 defender but he's a capable team defender(UCSD was great defensively and he was a part of them swarming teams on defense), but I do think he's quick enough to keep guys in front and would be fine sacrificing some size to bigger wings.
Offensively he can put the ball on the floor a bit(especially with how hard defenses have to closeout on him) and while I don't think he's going to finish at the rim around power conference 7 footers he is extremely capable of knocking down floaters and mid range jumpers.
Yeah if you just look at his 3pt percentage it doesnt jump out but he had the ultimate green light and it's on a ton of volume.
This year he shot 37.7% on 8.9 attempts per game. 8.9 attempts. He was also shooting 39.8% on 8.7 attempts before the postseason but had a rough 3 game stretch going 2-10, 1-6, and 3-15 from 3. People may point to the 3-15 from 3 against Michigan but the rims for the tourney were awful and it seemed like every team was shooting poorly. It's not like he couldn't get separation or open looks against Michigan they just weren't falling and he also managed to put up 25 pts and 9 rebs while being basically their only offense threat(Tait Jones couldn't score on their size).
Also, the year before he shot 41.3% from 3 on 7.3 attempts per game playing as the 6th man(proven capable shooter in a bench role). He also won the college three point contest this year.
Sorry for the essay but I think McGhie would be an incredible 6th man type to bring off the bench(especially when you need a jolt). I think he could legitimately shoot 45% + from 3 if he was getting the type of open looks Ben was getting last year. Plus, I think he would get peppered with open looks playing alongside Petrovic, Boswell, Stojakovic and good passing euro bigs. If the Illini are going to run the same system as last year offensively, I don't know if you could find a more perfect fit. He should also have 2 more years of eligibility(COVID year at Western Carolina and 2 years at D2 before 2 seasons at UCSD).
Would love to see us grab a high-motor wing
hate that Ty's out. but Jones would be a very, very nice late fill. nearly as realistically good as we could hope for (maybe strike the nearly)
His stats are really good. Don't think there were many 6"6 or below players last year averaging 13 & 9 REB.
Said it in the other thread, but assuming Ty is done for a few months Illinois will likely be adding one more now.
Go ahead and fire this thread back up!
