Sure, if you're on a budget it makes sense to prioritize. The problem is when you're in a league with unlimited spending, simply having a budget means you're starting the season behind. Like this whole conversation about the Illini is exactly what I hear with the Cubs and their mantra of "smart spending". The fact that we're chasing 3-stars this early tells me the top 10, maybe even the top 20, have left us behind.

I love it when fans carp about stuff long before the dust has settled

But we do spend. We’ve had a top 10’sh paid roster both of the past 2 years. Seems our staff is simply prioritizing spend in the portal and Euros over high school.
I fully buy we were top 10 or close in previous years. I would be shocked if we were top 10 or close this year or next.

you know what makes me sad? With the way the recruiting world has changed, we probably won't ever see another guy like Trent Frazier come through. Dude bled Orange & Blue. That's the type of recruiting I will miss.

Not just Trent I miss … Legends … The OG EDGs …

I’ve said it on here before … Think we land Constanza … That’s the 5 star …

I also think we get Luigi and other euros … Plus one or two portal guys …

Brad has also really pushed for Coleman … Wagler type prospect …
We pushing hard for Holmes? Even if, in vain?

He is the type of player that Brad HAS made into an All American multiple times. I just don't get how he isn't a "we can't let him leave without a commitment" guy.

Reckon I'm just surprised we have an official visit with a DUDE that I feel could be an absolute game changer but yet it seems like there is little optimism.

Yet somehow folks find it within themselves to complain about recruiting...
I would have bigger questions if they were making a bunch of prep splashes and didn't have the money to go out and get difference makers in the portal(like Stojakovic this year who I think will be the best player on the roster and guys like Shannon, Mayer, Plummer, Domask, and Guerrier in past classes).

Illinois is not Duke or Kansas. They don't have the budget to splurge on 5 or 6 top 30 recruits and still get portal guys and if you're forced to choose id rather get the older more experienced guys. Veteran teams tend to win more in March which is why pre portal we used to see a lot of experienced mid major teams come in and upset more talented but younger power conference schools.

For sure. I think the euro nature of this team is throwing folks off the scent that this years Illini are going to be old and good...

Coleman is coming from a strong Principia (MO) program run by long time ex Webster Groves (MO) coach, Jay Blossom. Blossom coached guys like Drew Hanlen, Courtney Ramey, Cart’Are Gordon. Coleman’s dad is I believe an assistant on that staff. Blossom has turned a non existent, doormat HS basketball program into a state powerhouse in literally 1-2 years.
Coleman has blown up lately. I have no issues if BU and company are recruiting a guy coached by Blossom and his staff. Blossum develops dawgs every year.

CFB and CBB is not apples to apples, but I do think this will be more the norm going forward. The overall depth of 4 and 5 stars that were staples of Alabama and Georgia football for so long is hard to maintain in the NIL era.

You're going to have to get back to good ole fashioned evaluating on the fringes of the roster. And if you hit on guys, like say a Wagler, it's a big deal alongside your high-money guys.
