I have been watching the Big 12, SEC, Big East tourney. These conferences play an entirely different game than the BIG. They play very physical basketball. When the game is over they all have bruises or bloody noses and the refs for the most part let them play. The Big is not physical and the refs call every little touch foul but are even inconsistent with those calls.
Brad recruits' guys that supposedly can shoot. The guys on his roster are not physical except for maybe Mirk, The twins seem to disappear when the game gets physical. Andrej and Keaton are excellent players but they are not physical either and get pushed around a lot. I once thought this team could make a deep run in the tourney and maybe even win it. But after watching these other teams like Arizona, Houston, Iowa State, UCONN, St. Johns, Michigan, Duke they would get blown away. The Illini need a complete makeover and recruit guys like Morez Johnson who can play if GIVEN A CHANCE! They need to be tough and this team just doesn't have it. They are more of a finesse team, shooting 3's, running to other end and letting the opponent do whatever they want but never getting any bruises or bloody noses.

Illinois has a lot of cache with their agent but personally I would be done recruiting European players because you won't win a National Championship with them.

I was actually taking about assistant coaches salaries. Without doing extensive research and going over it with fine tooth comb I think we’re pretty well positioned.

If “seeds” and “rankings”
do it for ya…great!
He's saying that you get what you pay for and that's what we paid for.

The shopping Michigan did took Mara from UCLA and Johnson from us. They're getting what they paid for AND they significantly weakened other conference teams.

He's not wrong. Adding the Euros is great, as long as it's an add on versus the entire roster profile. Remember the whole "Balkin Five" and picture of Brad crouching in the orange jacket? That was funny....until you see that we over endulged.

Teams line Arizona, Gonzaga and even Wisconsin did a great job putting a roster together. They have athletic stars that run the show, but Euro players who compliment them perfectly.

The balance has to be better. If we had Morez and Ty available this year, we would have had that perfect mix. Fate has it's way of changing things and here we are. Extremely one dimensional where we living in great perimeter shooting.

Are you positive Illinois has more money on the roster spent than houston? Chris Cenac was the 7th rated player in America, Harwell was the 16th rated player in America, and Flemings the 20th rated player in America - 3 kids in the top 20 these days aint cheap. And I promise you, Jojo Tugler and Emanuel Sharp got massive paydays. If houston's roster is not more than ours, i bet it is extremely close.

As for the bolded. Petrovic - sure, 100%. Miss. Everyone else, at times, has greatly contributed to us winning.
Not sure how much Houston has. Sampson was on the local TV here a couple of weeks ago bemoaning their lack of NIL funds, saying how difficult it is to complete with such funding. If true, he’s a miracle worker.

My prediction is we run it back with everyone except Andre and bring in a top PG and a top shooting guard who both can score and defend.

Starters:
Top Transfer (all BT level)
Top Transfer (all BT level)
Jake/Ty
Mirk
Tomi

Bench:
Lee
Jake/Ty
Z
Hopefully some sophomores and freshmen can make rotation

Does anyone really think that Illinois can compete with Duke on a yearly basis? They have had 30 McDonalds AA in the last 10 recruiting classes. How may have we had ever?

Jake shouldn't be a starter. He gets exposed against top teams. I’m TBD on Andrej, he could make a big jump in year 2. We also desperately need more athleticism on the wings.

So European players can’t be athletic?

Wealthy people always want more because there is always someone else with more (Duke).

Coaches say some stuff, I'll tell you that... they probably have the best collection of talent in the B12 sans Arizona... they already had Uzan, Sharp, Tugler, Miller (#41 RSCI), McCarty (#81 RSCI) and then added Cenac (#6 RSCI), Harwell (#12 RSCI) and Flemings (#16 RSCI)

I hope your right, we can win with that roster. I like the Colgate PG, super fast, fluid and team player. We have had a ton of success with freshmen especially PGs, but afraid our run will run out.

Would like Andrej to stay and see him running into the same issues at other higj Power 5 programs if he doesn't become a better 3 point shooter and have better vision to pass out on drives. He was given the opportunity, injuries and his outside shot hurt him. Along with breakout and dominant play from Wagler.

I think there is 50% we lose both Tomi and Z 25% Tomi stays, 25% Z stays. Think Mirk gets a bag to stay. Thonk Davis and Ty stay, Petro is gone... not sure about Lee unless he has a much bigger role.

But won’t this be pretty much the same for everyone? I hear lots of coaches hinting at expecting way more NIL budget this year. It’s all relative … will our budget be higher relative to our peer group?
Yeah, the key is really where our budget ranks compared to others. People see posts like this and it spins out into "top-15 budget," with no support, when there's a very good chance that isn't true. In reality everyone's player budget is going to increase because of revenue sharing.

And hopefully Tomi and Stoj moving off the books. I actually wouldn’t mind Stoj as an off the bench rotation piece, but obviously that’s never gonna happen.
Tomi and Stoj are not moving off the books. Andrej is not sitting behind anyone! Ridiculous

That’s not a second weekend team …
The key is who the two "top transfers" are. If they're next year's version of guys like Morez and Mara, to go alongside Tomi....that's phenomenal. We'd need to have a top transfer in the backcourt too.

We're going to lose our starting backcourt, which given what Keaton became is going to be next to impossible to do.

I'm not sure the kind of money that we'll have, but it feels like a couple of positions are going to be more Euro bargain shopping, which is why we're at where we're at.

Brad needs to find a way to get a squad that gets him back to his roots. Ball pressure, chaos defensively, man to man, transition buckets, floor burns, athleticism, etc. That's who Brad is. I don't think that the money to bring in those types of players and create that roster is there. He's had to adjust his style to what we can afford.

Look at the athletes that we had two years ago. A guy like Guerrier was critical on the boards. Ty was a high flier that would dive all over the place, we obviously had TJ and Domask was the perfect compliment. That was an Underwood type team.

Having killers like Frazier, D Williams, Plummer, etc were always ticked off and played mean. Brad never had to plead for toughness and tenacity.

Indy, you know better than us, but IMO, he doesn't have the funds to do that with high profile, intercollegiate, domestic transfers.

Yes, we will have a higher budget than all but maybe 1 or 2 teams in the Big Ten.
We'll see what happens in the tourney, but I wonder if at some point we allocate a little more to Football, where our $ seem to be spent more effectively.

Houston just put $75 million into their hoops stadium. They had a top 3 recruiting class. brought back a preseason all american and another one in Sharp who was the 3rd leading returning scorer in the big12, and Uzan.

I imagine Sampson is just playing the game of always for more, and truthfully, I respect that game. That's part of it.
