I am compelled to be all Gritty about this.

A massive portal haul by definition means we would be losing a bunch of players from the current history-making Final Four team.

You will believe in this thread that it's Petro and Jakstys for buzzy multi-million top 247 ranked guys, and that will prove to be totally wrong.

I adore our European guys, but I do love the fact that we are getting a local with tons of talent of this team. Especially when Mizzou was also recruiting him!
At this point if you choose Miznoz over the Orange and Blue I have some questions for you.

It seemed like an inevitable divorce a month ago, but I am now 100% all-in on paying the freight to get Stojakovic back next year.

Does the board agree?
I’ve got the exact same thinking.

Honestly in this day and age, retention feels less and less important. That being said, I think having a core of Andrej/ivisic x2/Jake/Mirk coming back would be a massive help for new comer talent. Throw Ty in there too for good measure.

Culture is extremely important. Sometimes it can organically come together but having that core would instant floor raise next year.

That's true, and god knows we keep succeeding at putting a whole new team together every year, but I really just don't think it's sustainable to have the #1 group of ex-players in the country. Not to mention it just being a bummer!

We should prioritize getting the band back together in our NIL spending this offseason.

I would say it's less common but more important BECAUSE culture is extremely important. Hard to establish culture over a single summer before games start.

Look at our teams who have had above average retention:
2020
2021
2022
2024
2026

Vs the ones who had poor retention:
2023
2025

I think Evan Miya or Pomeroy has data that supports the importance of retention, too - even in this wild, uncharted cbb frontier.

$5 million price tag …
I want to win the lottery just so I can say get out of here kid, you're not worth half that.

He had a great season and that was good for 3rd in conference and 1 NCAA tournament win. Is someone willing to give up $5 m going to be happy with 3rd in conference and 1 tournament win against a lower tier team?

There is just $0 ROI, so if anything happens and your team didn't win to the level you were hoping, you basically burnt that money. Not to sound like a bleeding heart, but there are many many better uses of that money than giving it to a kid pretending to be a student playing semi-pro basketball that is hanging on to the fandom created by the actual college game.
