1. I think that John Blackwell [Wisconsin] would be a fantastic transfer for Illinois, as long as he doesn't price himself out of the Illini's budget. (If Blackwell does demand too much money, I'd suggest that the Illini instead sign transfer guard Rowan Brumbaugh [Tulane], unless he decides to stay in the Draft. Brumbaugh's scoring and rebounding numbers were equivalent to those of Blackwell, while Brumbaugh averaged 3.5 assists/game vs 2.3 assists/game for Blackwell, albeit against lesser competition.) Many posters argue that Blackwell cannot replace Wagler's production or act as a true PG/lead guard. I'd actually consider Blackwell replacing Boswell as a combo guard in the Illini starting lineup, and a substantial overall improvement over Boswell's performance in the 25-26 season.
2. I think that freshmen guards Quentin Coleman and Lucas Morillo (together!) will try to replace the production of Keaton Wagler as lead guard (he was not a true PG) for the 26-27 Illini. But that's not much experience at that position. Some insiders have said that the price for experienced PG Jalen Cox [Colgate] is rising, and that Cox only wants to go somewhere that he starts, rather than coming off the bench. So, I'd look elsewhere to hopefully find an experienced, less costly, point/lead guard to come off the bench... IF the Illini can afford such an addition after paying for roster retention. I really like Jr. Christian Bliss [Delaware] a lot: 6'4", 190 pounds, 16.7/5.2/5.9 per game this past season. I'm not sure about his cost or desire to start vs substitute.
3. I think Illinois might be set at SF if Andrej Stojakovic and Jake Davis both return. Plus, Ty Rodgers, who I hope returns, can play solid minutes at SF (in addition to other positions). However, if the Illini need/want to add another SF via the portal, I would suggest looking at 6'6", 218-pound freshman forward Jamier Jones [Providence], who averaged 11.9/4.5/1.4 for the Friars this season, while shooting 38.7% on 3-pointers.
4. The Illini MUST retain David Mirkovic at PF. I think the Illini should also look to the portal for a solid player to back up Mirk, or split time with Mirk, at the PF position. My choice would be 6'9", 220-pound sophomore forward Sam Orme [Belmont], who averaged 12.7/5.0/1.8 this past season, while shooting 39.7% on 3-pointers. (I think that Blackwell and Orme might be the two most important transfers for Illinois!)
5. Assuming that Tomislav, Zvonimir, and Jakstys return, I believe that the Illini will be set at the center position for the upcoming season.
This speculation is way too early. We don't yet know who will be leaving the Illini. And we don't yet know who all will be entering the portal. But hers's my early speculation/wish list. My apologies for the essay-like length of this post.
