If teams are willing to pay 1st round NBA draft money for stars then college basketball has truly gone off the rails..
Just for perspective, here is a link to the rookie scale for this year's draft; the $5 million rumored asking price for some portal entrants is more than DOUBLE the salary for late first-round picks: https://basketball.realgm.com/nba/info/rookie_scale

(which, IMO, means that demands at that amount are pie-in-the-sky)

So I’m curious. If Ty isn’t here next year will it be because Illinois has pulled his scholarship and told him no room on the team for him or will it be because he wants more money than Illinois will give him?

JP Estrella is a steep steep steep downgrade from any of Michigan's big 3 bigs from last season. At best, he'll be their 2nd big (and most ideally 3rd IMO). He's a solid contingency guy while we see how things play out with their priority bigs/targets. I expect all 3 current Michigan bigs to go pro. I think all 3 will wind up being Top 20-25 picks.

McKenney is the dude with Michigan that I think takes a enormous Year 2 leap if he returns. Dude is a killer and fully expect him to be in the running for B1G POY if he's back. Credit to him for taking on his freshman role in stride 👍
I feel like a statement in the same vein could have been made about Mara about this time last year...

I doubt he goes anywhere other than another high major program, but he needs to be in a system where he fits.
He’s from Michigan, and it isn’t hard to imagine him being really good in Tom Izzo’s system in the Draymond/Xavier Tillman, high post roller/facilitator role.
I just threw up in my mouth a bit…

Ya, lower level doesn’t necessarily mean not P4.

But while I agree with you on system 100% matters. I just don’t think a top 25 program can commit or promise anything in way of PT at the moment.

Yeah at this point it’s agents and players preying on college pride fanatical donors. Think SEC football programs.

I don’t think it’s healthy or sustainable for players (some of whom may never make the NBA) out-earning first round draft picks.

College will soon just become the G League. Teams essentially rolling out new rotations on an annual basis. I suppose Michigan has started this trend.

But at least with UConn (Karaban) and Florida (they returned Condon, Haugh, Chinyelu from a title squad) there was some balance of returning players, transfers, and freshmen.

From a pure commercial/market in perspective, the NCAAs needed to distinguish itself from the NBA/G League. Those lines are very quickly blurring when Yaxel probably could have started on a lottery-bound team this year.

It’s a tough spot for Ty. Our offense has changed and our quality of players has been elevated. A Two year hiatus is difficult to overcome. I remember him as a freshman and the consensus was he could play at the next level once he improved his outside shot.

Andrej Stojakovic shot 24.4% from the three-point line this year. I’ll just leave this here, ya know, for fun.

For some perspective, that’s worse than Kylan Boswell.
Manute Bol shot 21% from three point range during his NBA career. I mean, if you’re better than Manute…
