Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

They’re after him … But if we want the kid and went full go rodeo …

North Carolina can’t hang with us financially …
@Indy Illini Fan - Do you sense this extra cash we have this year is likely to continue in future years?

Or is a big piece for next year solely around the guys coming back (who have demonstrated ability to win and play hard) gives us a unique chance at a historic season (and with a legacy as top portal target)

I wish I could like this more than once!
Agreed. If Coleman is a starter, that certainly doesn't mean all is lost. His recruiting profile is on par with Ayo's. State champ (put up 50 in the title game this year), Mr. Basketball, etc.. We are going to love watching him grow here.

Obviously Blackwell represents a well-known quantity, and a guy who is a proven difference maker in the B1G, but Coleman may be even more talented, albeit not as developed physically and mentally.

If Brad's stance is Blackwell or bust, it is likely because he thinks he's the only guy available who would be a sure-fire upgrade.

I feel like we need to be more excited about this kid than we are...

And obviously Ayo stepped right into an alpha dog role on a terrible team, the guy I'd see as a comp is Adam Miller, who like Coleman is comfortable off-ball and was a strong HS shooter, so they both have the right profile to be a supporting complementary player to other stars while starting as a freshman.

This is 100% correct - met him he asked me how long I had been a fan and was very nice, guys like him really want to be left alone. He is super cool, but he will not be a fan boy. I do think he loves how rabid our fan base is.
I will simply take him being present at the Illini games. It means Andrej is an Illini and shows that he is fully supportive of his son.

I wouldn't overlook Pat Kelsey at Louisville. He's won at a lot of levels, had a great season in 24-25 in his last, and how they are supercharging their basketball NIL, because they see an opening with Kentucky floundering. It'll be Louisville and Duke atop the ACC next year. What they can't sell is a recent history of deep tournament runs, but for a guy who took Winthrop, Charleston and now Louisville to multiple tournaments, he wins. They'll be a second weekend NCAA tournament team next year, and then it's a matter of can they make that next jump with their expensive roster.
Louisville being #10 in the AP poll, 18-2 in the ACC and getting an 8-seed in the '25 tourney was BRUTAL. (LOL)

You're absolutely right and logical. That said, you know us and expecting logic and reason is your mistake lol.

Also, since it's Friday, big perm (I mean big worm) came to mind. Just sub in Illinois retention/recruiting news for money.

My Magic 8 Ball says "IT IS DECIDEDLY SO" Andrej will return. But it was wrong in 1948 when it predicted Dewey over Truman and later Liston over Clay.
I feel real good this time. It's a real good thing, real good. Incidentally, the first and last initials of my name are TZ - as in Twilight Zone.

At what point do P4 universities with more talent than can play develop "feeder" relationships with other schools? So let's say you have 2-4 red shirts or talented players buried at 12-15 on the depth chart. Those players go to a mid-major with a similar coaching philosophy to gain PT and the best of them become "preferred" targets for return.

It's just the natural evolution into what has become a pro league...to have feeder systems.

I wouldn't expect this to be a thing. Player movement is going to be dictated by the players and schools that want them. The caveat would be for athletes that get multi-year deals, which I think really only applies to the elite guys being courted by the upper echelon P4 schools. The stakes are higher there, and adding something that acts like a buy-out could make sense.

Without some form of contractual leverage, the mid-level schools will get picked over by everyone willing to pay more.

It’s so nice to not have to sweat a decision like Blackwell’s anymore. Just shows how far this program has come.

The way I see it, we are the championship favorite with him and Stojakovic, we are a championship contender with only Stojakovic. What a time to be an Illini fan.
I agree but don’t we lack frontcourt depth? Do we expect Jakatys to play?

First post, but been reading for years. I don’t believe anyone has mentioned this…getting Zavier Zens is smart as it would get Illinois an easy look from all four of Kon Knueppel’s younger brothers- Zen’s first cousins - should they also be D1 caliber players.
