I would bet serious money that at least 80% of Illinois sports Twitter folks and beat writers are some of the posters swimming around on this board...

Someone could probably do a pretty effective writing style scrub reconciling published articles against writing style on here, so careful what you post... (not a threat, I'm not smart enough for all that haha)

My brother in Christ, adding another year for the homegrown, worth his weight in chemistry gold, veteran “captain” who was selfless and team-focused in helping train the younger guys would be nothing but a positive across the board.

His playing concerns only started when he broke his hand. He came back as quickly as he did because we were in serious need of having him back. Give him a summer to heal further, a summer to lead the team and younger guys again, and we’d be a force. Never mind the fact that he fills the one role many on here have had concerns with.

I think the only risky part would be other guys like Coleman and Andrej, if it affects their commitment like adding Blackwell was going to do. That’d be the only argument I could entertain why adding Boswell would be a negative aside from how others have expressed it means other teams get stronger from their graduating class.
Fair enough. If he returns, I just want a better defensive version of Kylan. That’s it. We’re going to score PLENTY of points.

We need him to return to that disruptive force he was two years ago.

Torvik had Boswell as our second best offensive player and our third best defensive player and that’s with him playing a third of the season on a broken hand:

He’s an unselfish player (4th amongst starters in usage), a strong leader, and a decent to good defender, which this team doesn’t have a whole lot of right now.

I’d take him back in a heartbeat.
I'm a sucker for advanced metrics, and I think I have a decent handle on ORTG and PRPG!, but I definitely stare at this and wonder how he's that high. I guess his "assists minus turnovers" are worth as much or more than the other guys' higher TS%, ORB, and usage.

I'd still take him in a heartbeat

It would be his 7th season on a roster. He played through 12 games at Texas tech, one injury season at Alabama and one healthy year, and three years at Michigan. It would be his 6th playing year.

Ok, continued nitpicking and semantics aside, lets not get lost in granular discussion about a single player with a special case when there's a core question here:

Will the NCAA grandfather specific injury rules in for existing players?

The more I read about this, it seems the rules are expected to be phased in to avoid immediately penalizing current student athletes, with potential even for special transfer windows for those affected

Translated to avoiding potential lawsuits.

Keep in mind that he frequently guarded the best offensive player on the opposing team.

For the love of everything good and holy…….. Morillo is not a “4”.
Ok? So you don't think Ben (& Kylan) would impact Morillo's minutes or his perception of the opportunity at IL?

This seems like an odd thing to focus on rather than the, ya know, the point.

5 in 5 being enacted in May after the transfer portal would be absolutely insane.

Obviously I would hate it in that other teams get way better which hurts Illinois but also just in general what happens to all the kids that transferred places expecting a role and now that role is gone because a guy that was previously out of eligibility is now back?

I genuinely think you would have to reopen the transfer window for everyone.

I don't even know if I like the 5 years of eligibility or not but just wait until December and then pass it for the next year before the transfer portal for fall sports opens up. It would also be insane to potentially let all these 5th year guys come back for fall sports after teams have already moved on and spent everything.

Absolutely- none of what I said was intended to take away from his defensive contribution (whether or not measured by any current metrics). But PRPG! and ORTG do not include any defensive stats, so I'm a bit surprised they're so high.

I do know that ORTG (and therefore PRPG!) decreases the penalty for missed shots if your team gets a lot of ORBs, so his lower TS% than the other starters is diminished some. On that note, I wish it used the team ORB% on each particular player's misses though- I looked at a handful of games and saw that we got way more ORBs on our guards' misses than the Ivicic's.

Who'd of thunk? More NRs than #1s, and as many as #2s.
The NCAAT is too much of a crapshoot, and I don't value media rankings (especially pre-season ones)

I'd like to see a comparison of end-of-season KenPom vs pre-season odds (and/or pre-season KenPom/Torvik/EvanMiya), but I haven't seen that anywhere.

Illinois allegedly couldn't play Stojakovic and Boswell together last season because of their shooting. If Boswell (CG) would be starting next season for the Illini, I wouldn't want Stojakovic to again lose his starting SF position. And if Boswell were to return, and obviously be paid NIL dollars, why not pay that money to a young stud SG like 6'5" Paul McNeil Jr. of North Carolina State? Not only is McNeil a much better shooter than KB, but you could also play him with Stojakovic.

Soooo…… I asssume a lot of smart men and women with numerous advanced degrees will discuss the 5 in 5 rule and correctly deduce that it should be applied to incoming freshmen……. Right?

Kylan Boswell IMHO probably came back at least a month early from the broken hand. He wanted to be able to help his team in his last year, and they needed his defense. Illinois wasn't really using him to his strengths. He did what he was asked to do. Look at him with three or four more weeks healing time and being used like he was in the P.I.T games recently. Seems like a different guy.
He performed very well at the PIT. I think Boswell wants to, and should, pursue the professional route, whether that means being drafted or signing as a FA with an NBA team. Seems like that might be better for KB and Illinois.
