Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

Only 2 guys who started the final four will be starting this year unless something changes I believe thats the same at 06.
Davisic, Mirk and Tomi, no?

Here’s what I’m struggling with: We were ready to offer John Blackwell 4-5 million dollars. Ethan Brown or whoever else you want to discuss was on the squad when those conversations were ongoing, correct?

So Blackwell and his posse back off and now we have decided we’re good. Why??? I am not advocating that they have to spend 4-5 million dollars, but there is no reason to not spend a portion of that money and bring in a solid player. You can never have too much depth.

@PepeSilvia brought up a good point yesterday. Michigan lost LJ Cason in February and they were able to withstand that significant loss because of superior depth.
And if we're stopping here in terms of additions, why would Brandon Lee leave?

I personally ranked last year's team 4th since 88 89. You can quable about an exact number but 05 06 is somewhere around 6th 7th......this team is appearing to start at the 5th spot. Slightly worse then last year's. So closer to the 0506 team then the first spot. Only 2 guys who started the final four will be starting this year unless something changes I believe thats the same at 06.

If everyone plays to their max ability they can jump way up the list. A couple injuries and or underperfoming at the wrong spots they can drop off.
5 of our top 8 players are back from a final four team, we added the second highest ranked recruit in Illinois 247 era history, the 12th highest, and a top tier guard transfer that has an incredibly high ceiling.

I agree. Think we are good at the guard spot. Wagler/Bos/Lee/Petro are replaced with Vaaks/Coleman/Morillo/Brown. Might want to find a decent 4 to replace Ben's minutes or Jake and Z just get a lot more minutes.

17 million percent I’m far more concerned with replacing Ben’s rotation minutes than being caught up in ballhandler depth.

Wait...That's pretty good right? Can't be...

2005 Illinois is essentially 2025 MSU and we saw the trouble that could pose to IL. Remember Dee was 2nd team AA, Augie 1st team B10, Randle all B10 D, Smith all B10 freshman and Frazier went on to 3 all B10 D teams (and was already a dog).

Talent:
Vaaks vs Dee - Dee
Mirk vs Augie - Mirk but it's close
Andrej vs McBride - Andrej
Tomi vs Pruitt - Tomi
Davis vs Randle - Tie
Bench- Z, Coleman & Morillo vs Smith, Carter & Frazier - 2026 but given that Coleman/Morillo have not suited up it's hard to say this is a significant advantage.

Coach
Brad>Bruce

Who wins?
I think 26 Illinois would beat 05 IL by 5 to 10

Recruiting definitely Brad. X and O coaching I’ll take Weber

I think it is pretty simple Dje stays no Blackwell. I am fine with that since we have Coleman. See my issue with adding this “serviceable” tough small guard for defense is that whenever this player is on the floor our 5 shooters and positionless basketball sort of does not work. I think the role to fill is BH role. Did anyone ever think he would be so good at the role he had? He is going to prove to be a very difficult player to replace. Ty with just a little bit of a shot is tempting, but again those would probably be mid range at best? Look at our shot charts you need to take Dunks/Layups or threes in this offense. I have always been a little skeptical of BU, and I am at the point now of saying he knows a $h@t more about the game than me? I don’t mind waiting for a euro player, I just hope it is guy that can be our new BH? Will Riley was a very late signee and somehow BU seems to find good players from many places.

What he's doing is this --

4 guys on our final 4 team will back: Mirk, Tomi, Andrej, Jake (Z as well, yes)

Mirk and Tomi will be the only ones starting on next year's team who also started the final 4.

Jake won't be starting. And Andrej didn't start the final 4.

It's just a loop whole ... and a pretty ignorant one.

Does anyone have a tool they use for the ncaa where they track lineup combinations?

I’d be curious how many minutes Jake and Andrej played together last year and it’s “effectiveness”. Also think for Brad’s positionless style, it would be an interesting tool to play around with

Well and like you'd have been laughed off this board 365 days ago for suggesting Stojakovic would sit behind Jake.

Who says Jake won't start next year? That guy has played more and better than expectations in all three of his college seasons thus far.

Probably didn't want to be the 10th guy in an 8 player rotation (sounds like staff is very high on Ethan Brown)
I mean those are a collection of words that can be stuffed into the narrative hole in question, but they don't really add up to a plausible argument.

A path to playing time opened up for Lee, and he left the same day.

Occam's razor here is we're going to get one more.

Oh, absolutely.

As a baseline, Justin Harmon - who was very glad to come play here - averaged 14pts, 3.8rebs, 2.9ast at UTAH Valley. At Illinois, he played 18.7 minutes per game.

You could literally go on and on, but here's 3 guys with similar profiles at their most recent stops.

Actually... it's the other way around. You'll make much more playing 15 minutes here than starting for a penurious school like Boston College, Utah, DePaul, etc.
Give em a call. Then call BU and tell him you got some players lined up for him.

Maybe we should try to balance the force here…

This Illini team has everything it needs to be the best team ever. We’re going to have to practice against NBA teams just to improve. I feel bad for the rest of the B1G who stands no chance.

Blackwell didn’t come because he saw our embarrassment of riches and thought it wasn’t fair. Too bad he didn’t want to be a national champion, which we are all but guaranteed. Playing the games are really only a formality at this point.

Brad is already the greatest Illini coach in history and will cement himself as one of the greats in all of the NCAA history next year.

Oh, and our team is gonna be a hell of a lot of fun.

He’s not counting Davis - the argument is the final four starters were Keaton, Davis, Bowell, Mirk and Tomi. And since Andrej will probably start over Jake this year, it doesn’t count
😂😂😂You’ve got to count either Davis or Andrej as a starter. Otherwise, there were only 4 guys who started in the FF. Davis was a starter. Andrej played starter minutes.

I think the suggestions for possible improvements are respectful and aren't implying any doom. Maybe they're bad ideas or undersell our current roster or are wishful thinking, but the staff made it clear they also wanted even more in their attempt to get Blackwell, so it's kind of ironic to criticize anyone wishing for more.

Last year's team ended the season ranked #5-7 in KenPom/Torvik/EvanMiya. Teams like that go into the NCAAT with ~7% odds to win it all, and our pre-season odds are currently around that also. With those odds every year, we'd have a ~50% chance of a natty in 10 years. Brad has brought us so far to even be thinking about this right now. And I think he would agree that we'd like those chances to continue to get better- meaning we need a handful of teams meaningfully better than last year's.

Maybe there's nothing else that can be done this year because we can't force whoever we want to play here, but we don't have to insult respectful opinions (much less the people sharing them).
My intention was not to insult anyone. If that is how you took it I apologize.
I do find it interesting that sometimes I read that BU is not satisfied so why should the fans be satisfied. Other times the staff IS satisfied so the true fans need to cry out they need to do more. It appears that whatever narrative suits the argument best is the one they run with.

Offensively we are juiced again ... should be another KenPom darling and really fun to watch.

Defensively I don't know ... are we better, worse, same? Maybe better as a unit with all of the IQ? I still worry about not have "that dog" on D to put a speed bump on the quick guards out there.

Coleman is not backup PG. He’s going to start at SG.

Morillo is interesting since he can play 1-4. The thing is we’re counting on him to be ready. If he is, he’ll definitely see the court since he can fill 4 of the 5 spots.
Morrilo is not a B10 4 man. There is no darn way right at 6'7" 215lbs he is going to play effectively defend the B10 power 4s like Morez, Pherrell Payne. MSUs, Purdues, or most other teams. Morrilo wasnt brought here to back up Mirk and guys Mirk can cover. Its ridiculous to think he can match up with the guys the B10, Bama, Tennessee and UConn play at that spot. Its totally a pipe dream. Morrilo can play the 1-3 but if he is asked to defend the 4s in this league he will be abused.

In that case Z is your backup 4 man and you play Double Ivisic.

Can he guard the back-up 4 though?
