Did I miss something? In most of the depth-chart prognosticating, why is ZZ left out?

After what we just experienced, any assumptions about Brown, Davis, and Zens seem premature, don't they?

Fell down a deep rabbit hole and was just interested in looking at the top 25 universities with the most millionaire alumni, and just look at the universities who spend money on sports and which ones don't. Which schools make sense that they are good in men's basketball and/or football. Few things jumped out, Harvard could dominate in the NIL if they wanted to lol, but also that 4 Big Ten Schools made the list, none of which were Illinois. The fact Michigan can spend so much on NIL for football and basketball is very obvious. Not in the big ten, but it also explains Duke spending so much each and every year. One take away was the fact only one team in the Final Four was in the top 25 of millionaire alumni...Michigan. For those curious, USC has the most ultra wealthy..billionaires in the Big Ten. My biggest takeaway was it just made me stop and appreciate Josh and Brad even more so, simply for the amount of support/NIL they are able to bring in and especially considering the pool of ultra wealthy wanting to donate millions is a much smaller field of rich donors than a lot of schools that Illinois finishes ahead of in football and basketball. No clue the amount of hours that are spent on the NIL pool and fund raising but obviously Illinois is ELITE ! Sorry, just thought it was interesting, I didn't check past the top 25 schools, so no clue where Illinois even ranked. Some of the schools in top NIL monies are simply how many former /current pro's they have or have had. Not as many millionaires as some schools but an obviously large contingent of millionaires from sports who would more likely to donate towards sports. Sorry to bore ya with useless knowledge lol

also for those who care about preseason rankings Only 2 teams in the last 20 years won the title after being ranked pre season number one and no schools in the last 10.

If Illinois had continued to push hard for John Blackwell while the portal was open and a key recruit was unsigned, neither Andrej Stojakovic nor Quentin Coleman would be on this team.

If true, this is unfortunate and Brad made the correct decision.

However, all I can say is I am seriously a bit disappointed in our players for having that stance. I love them, but disappointment in this regard.

I mean, why do other teams' key players at places such as Florida, Duke, Michigan, etc. seem willing to sacrifice (last year and looking like this year too) to give themselves/team a SIGNIFICANTLY better chance of winning a NC? But our key players are not willing to do the same thing?

To be honest, I hope this is not true and it all about $$$...and this narrative is to soothe the fan base and make them stop complaining. But likely not. Our insiders are typically correct.

Either way, I am still stoked about our team. But what could have been?

One other thought I’ve had:

Originally I was nervous about our European pipeline getting more competitive, since we’ve have had so much success with Euro players, but now I’m not mad one bit at a player like Vaaks being recruited by Providence last year.

Let other teams deal with the Visa challenges, having them arrive late on campus the first year, etc, then we’ll scoop them up in the portal a year or two later.

Yep. plus they’ll be well developed by the time they arrive here and not just some unknown piece.

I bet some of you guys don't spend as much time wondering why your ex broke up with you as you do with why Blackwell chose Duke over us.

I could care less about Blackwell. Never ever thought he plugged that major of a gap for us once we got Vaaks. Like, yes, if Blackwell was going to commit to a PG role (his words regarding picking Duke), I would have taken him over Vaaks. But, I was more than happy we got Andrej and QC to sign up instead. That’s 2 major pieces PLUS Vaaks as insurance for missing on Blackwell. Great tradeoff!

However, what I still worry about with this squad is athleticism.

You all noticed how big every tiny margin makes in the NCAA tourney. If Boswell hits that layup off the Mirk block on Karaban and Andrej doesn’t miss both free throws we go up 2 possessions (26-21) with 5min to play in the first half. Instead, UConn finishes the first half on a 16-7 run. We could have had 26 points with 5min to play in the first half and instead finish with 29 by the end of it. Thats how quickly games turn. To steal a football analogy, a game of inches.

Athleticism gives you margin. It gives you the pick 6 steals and run-outs off DRebs. It gives you high percentage offense in the way of dunks, oops and putbacks. It yields you ORebs you had no business getting (Demery before the dagger 3 from Mullins). It allows you to make hero ball plays in low shot clock situations. It allows Michigan to go 2/15 from 3 while weathering 9 made 3s against.

Andrej showed flashes of that athleticism. Hope another offseason of workouts and full lower body health yields a tick up in that category. You hope Z can better harness his with a more filled out frame and a more polished offensive repertoire. You hope QC can add a bit of mass to his frame and pop to his game to pair with his uber skills/touch/shot. And you hope Morillo’s 6’7 frame lends itself to drop-in lays vs. backboard rim outs. You hope Mirk achieves his offseason goal of working on his dunking and face-up game (his words, not mine).

This^ is all very plausible. Keaton didn’t need to dunk the ball once to earn a Top 8 draft position. He’s one of one. But having him and Jake on the perimeter and Mirk and Tomi in the frontcourt undeniably made for a below average team from a strictly athleticism perspective when compared to other contenders this past year (Florida with Haugh/Chinyelu; UConn with Mullins, Ball and Tarris; Duke with Evans, Sarr, Boozers; Michigan with EVERYONE; Arizona with EVERYONE).

BUT I’m excited for a more cut Mirk, a healthy and improved Andrej, Vaaks’ positional length at PG (somehow upgrading from Keaton’s 6’6), and our incoming FIVE STAR (wow fun to be able to say that). I hope Tomi can work a tad on his lateral quickness and I hope we can occasionally run the Twinisivic Towers lineup as rim protection insurance.

As I tell my son, who is in your general neighborhood, Michigan is scUM. He's fallen for their cheap tricks. I will have to cut him out of the will and retrain his boys. They're young and still impressionable.
My son went to MSU to get his masters, and went over to the darkside. We talk thru a jointly-agreed upon 3rd party.

Her agent said she wasn’t getting enough touches 😜

Maybe fourth in the big ten… Illinois is going to struggle to guard athletic, physical PG/SGs man…
Houston says Hello!

What are "real minutes"?
Coleman Hawkins got about 6 min a game in 20-21. (167)
Goode snuck in at #98, and played 9 minutes a game.
DGL got about 7 mpg. (#148)

With a kid like Lee, I'm just not sure what his elite skill is...
With Brown, you can watch about 5 seconds of tape and see what his elite skill is.
Ethan Brown >Brandon Lee
Better ball handler, passer, shooter.
Remains to be seen defensively but looks average at worst.

Here’s my read on the Blackwell recruitment based on reading all 4 boards (Illinois, Duke, UCLA, and Louisville) during it:

— Just like Illinois insiders were confident in landing Blackwell from the jump, so were Duke insiders. According to them, Blackwell’s agent was having conversations about transferring there mid-season. I imagine those same conversations were happening on the Illinois side.

— My guess is dad really wanted him at Illinois, whereas he likely leaned Duke.

— While there was some noise around UCLA and Louisville, I doubt they were ever serious contenders. Blackwell’s agent is located in LA and went to UCLA, hence the visit. Louisville was likely used to drive the price up. But it sounds like it was always a two horse race between Duke and Illinois.

The day Andrej announced his return, we fell out of the running for Blackwell. Two days later, Coleman signed. That points to Brad needing to make a decision: keep both Andrej and Coleman and pass on Blackwell or lose one or possibly even both by continuing to pursue Blackwell.

— Even if the staff chose to continue pursuing Blackwell, there was obviously no guarantee we would’ve landed him. Duke would’ve still been hard to beat.

— Blackwell going to Duke who’s stacked at guard (to me) points to the usage concerns being more internal than with Blackwell.

— I give Blackwell credit. When he entered the portal, he said he wanted to win. Louisville might’ve been a bigger bag, but he honored what he said he wanted. Though, I wish it would’ve worked out for him here.
Bingo. The choice was made on our end and the fact that Coleman signed after Blackwell moved on cements that. Drej was the domino. That pushed Blackwell out and Coleman in. Blackwell has his on ball demands, I'm SURE that after coming off the bench last year, Drej had his demands/assurances and Coleman didn't want to be iced out if Blackwell still did decide to come.

Our insiders nailed it. There's only so much you can do when kids/parents have their own agendas. Just make the pieces fit as well as possible. We want a "super team" and they're chasing that NBA bag/dream and rightfully so!

That story is clear as day right now. I would HATE to be the coaches having to go through this every spring/summer.

Niko Bundalo, a 6'10" power forward and former McDonald's All-American, officially entered the transfer portal on April 21, 2026, after a single season at Ole Miss. Illinois originally offered Bundalo as a high school recruit in May 2023 and remained on his list of potential suitors throughout his recruitment.

Historical Interest: Illinois was among the high-major programs that offered him early in his development.

If a John Blackwell commit to Duke over Illinois, and there’s no Illini fans around to ask why, did he actually commit to Duke?

I'm still somewhat nervous about Vaaks; let's get him signed.

We struggled with that last year and finished 2nd in the Big Ten, and we are still going to add someone to help in that aspect. (And for the record Blackwell doesn't defend well and would not have particularly helped, one of many reasons he didn't make a ton of sense as an addition)

There's always downside risk, but the fundamentals of offensive efficiency that make us hard to play against aren't going anywhere, and if we get above-median outcomes from Mirk, Andrej and Tomi we will be basically unstoppable on that end. There are not other teams in CBB who are returning that kind of skill level with experience playing together.

Honest question, am I crazy for thinking Coleman will be an upgrade from post injury Kylan? Love boz, but 49% from 3 is lethal even if it’s HS.
If Coleman is a knockdown shooter, and there's no reason to think he won't be, he will fit a complementary role better than Kylan did.

Post injury is a different story.

However, for the totality Boswell averaged 12.3 points per game. If I had to bet O/U .... give me the under.
This kid is going to be efficient. Whether under or over, he will take good shots and share it. His rebounding is impressive.

Good vs very good is splitting a hair a bit, but they have probably the 3rd best roster in the B1G right now

They return more minutes than anyone sans Illinois & Michigan State

6 top 100 players, same number as Michigan has (just for example)
Their roster isn't that good.

They were a bubble team most of the season and lost their 2 best players plus another starter.

USC has 8 top 100 players, does that make them better than us? Or UCLA? Michigan has 8 until Aday or Johnson declares. Are you really worried about Xavier Booker because hes a top 100 player? High school rankings don't mean much. UCLA's best bet is the BIG is weak, because they're worse than last year. They'll be lucky to open in the top 25.
