Tyler, most of us here don't have a guy like Neel Ganta whose job it is to find players, but we very strongly suspect that somewhere out there exists an experienced mid-major, "team player" who has interest stepping up a level to come off the bench for a team that could compete for the National Championship. The Illini certainly have found those guys in the past: Jacob Grandison, Alfonso Plummer, Justin Harmon, Jake Davis, Ben Humrichous. I simply do not believe that there does not exist a veteran collegian who is willing to fill the 'first guard off the bench' role and provide considerably better defense than (checks notes) a freshman Ethan Brown.
No to bringing anyone else in. And I don’t believe we need any mid major as I personally, rather get those minutes do the five and four star freshman that we have coming in.

We dont want the 5 for 5 retroactive. Other teams would benefit way more than we would
Agree. I think if that was what was being referred to, there would be more about it in the national news...

Even if it gets passed, there is no guarantee it will apply to player who have already exhausted their eligibility, or for that matter even playes whose clock has started. It could be passed as only applying to the class of 2027... There are a lot of what if's in that proposal.

I'm not sure that I am a huge fan of 5-in-5 happening this year

Purdue brings back the big 3
Wilkerson back at Indiana
Burnett, Gayle and Tschetter all back for Michigan
Kohler and Cooper back for Michigan State
Mast, Lawrence and Hoiberg all back for Nebraska
Martinelli back for Northwestern
Thornton, Noel, Johnson, Tilly all could return for Ohio State
Bittle back for Oregon
Bilodeau and Dent back for UCLA
CBM, Dickerson, Ausar and like 3 other guys could come back for USC
Claude, Peterson, Ognacevic, Kepnang could return for Washington
Boyd, Carrington and Rohde back for Wisconsin

I know all of them wouldn't return for another year, but they could...

And then there's the question of whether they're allowed to enter the portal.

And THEN there's the question of whether courts would allow the new rules and their rollout to proceed as the NCAA plans.

It would be pandemonium.

But it would allow us to ask where we stand with AJ Storr again, so.....

How will they address teams who do not have the scholarship availability and the player hasn’t entered the portal?

Indy signal: So Boswell is getting a FIFTH year, to come back and be our FIFTH option for our guards, battling to get FIFTH in the Big ten ? /s

With the extra Covid years they just suspended the roster limits.

They'd be loathe to do that again I suspect, but who knows.

If this has positive momentum within the Big Ten (what I would suspect any insider chatter would derive from) that's interesting, but this is far from a done deal.

It's Congress that could really resolve this once and for all, but by all accounts they don't want to touch the issue.

5 in 5 would be awful in general, but especially awful for our team next year. Love Kylan and would be glad to have him back, but we would lose our consensus preseason top 5 status quickly with what other teams could bring back.
Iowa St, Houston, Arizona all get back guys as good if not clearly better than Hummer & Boswell. Plus we have to endure another year of Smith at Purdue.

Also do we see Morez all over again with Brad playing Ben over Morillo (assuming he doesn't just ask out of his commitment).

It's annoying for sure, but probably good in the long run for the "product".

Wow. If this passes Mirk could be reclassed as a Senior this year. At least it sounds that way.
Not the way I read it - the 5 in 5 rule would start their freshman year or their 19th birthday whichever is first - then they have 5 years to play - Mirk would have 4 more years I think. Petro would only have one more year potentially, for example - they want to avoid the 23 year olds coming over from Europe being deemed freshman/soph's - that doesn't apply to Mirk, KJ, Ivisic's

I cannot imagine the chaos that would happen if they granted the fifth year starting immediately. There would be so many awkward and very hard conversations when a fifth year senior comes walking into the locker room with his gym bag and the coaches have to explain, Unmm we kinda moved on and four years was enough of you. I could see some seriously ugly break ups lol.

I’d also worry about the awkward conversation with a freshman or transfer player with the assumption they are either dropped now, or riding pine when they thought they’d have a bigger role

Hope so. The way the statement in the tweet was worded confused matters a bit.
