Basketball is a high intensity endurance sport. At this level they have to be able to sprint for several minutes if the game goes a long time between whistles. It doesn't seem surprising at all that a high level basketball athlete would make a damn good mile runner.
DJ Richardson set the team record in the Self days as a freshman and I don’t think he broke 5:00.

There’s a lot of room between damn good mile runner and 4:19 at 230 lbs.

I think Bens athleticism is very underated. He showed it at times with surpising tip dunks and ability to move for a man his size. Ben was strong and is quite an athlete. Now those traits may not be super explosive but still. His endurace, stamina was awesome and he is pretty fast. He set a team record in the mile at 4 min 18 seconds i recall and if you can do that you are certainly showing some at nlwtic traits in doing so.
Fair enough. Ben made some bigtime plays this past season, particularly on D.I just felt like Zens showed more lateral quickness and had faster bounce off the floor if that makes any sense.

I once finished a Welcome Back Kotter marathon. That counts for something… right?
Depends how long it took you. And if you don’t want to tell us, then up your nose with a rubber hose.

Yeah, endurance and stamina dont matter and high school Zavier Zens thats 6'7" , 215 lbs is already a better athlete and better than Ben at the 4. Dudes Bens graduated and still way undervalued by a large portion of our fan base.
Bottom line is, if we could still have Ben that ZZ wouldnt see the court and likely still wont. The grass isnt always greener and i pray T, Z or Mirk dont get sick or hurt because if you think ZZ is gonna stop Payne or guys like him....your nuts! Payne was out last year but that guy will be a load for Mirk...Hell Domask would own ZZ ...I Think our fans are dillisional to think Jake Davis or a 210lb 6 7 ZZ s is gonna stop a grown !!! man.....hell 6'6" Domask strong dude would own his !!! and good teams have tbose dudes but taller .

You’re about 10 years off on your timeline (Groce was the DJ’s coach)
As someone who ran a 5:27 mile (humble brag) 15ish years ago at 5’11” / ~180#, I’d be shocked if DJ set a team record at 6’3” / ~175# (guessing) and didn’t break 5.

I'll wade into the Ben mile time. At 45 years old I was running 5:30s in training for a marathon. And I wasn't in athlete level shape. So I don't know what Ben ran, but 5:19 is not it. I'm sure it a good way under that time.
4:19. MENS HOOP RECORD.

12.8 miles/hr is a 4:40 mile. And running on a treadmill is a helluva lot different than running on a track. A Division 1 athlete with some motivation will run faster in free space.
I think Ben is (was) is capable.

Ben was 210 when he got here so much leaner then

My limited research suggests a D1 basketball player (very few of them, obviously) could achieve that time

he's been at 6' 6" for at least a year now, so I think that's highly unlikely
You should know for a fact that he will be listed at 6'9" by somebody at sometime. Most college teams do that and then when they get to the NBA combine, they lose an inch or two.

That practice fools nary a soul and is a pet peeve of mine. I would prefer my roster to be listed an inch shorter than what they actually measure with no shoes or socks. It is quite depressing when you lose the rebound stat by 15+ to a team on whom you have a height advantage of 2" per man. When I ask about a player's height, I want to know how tall that player is and not how thick his socks or shoe soles are. When a player is measured, he has to hit every half inch to get credit. So a guy that is 6 ft.6 15/16 " hits the roster at 6' 6.5".

Bottom line on height is that it is pretty insignificant what the game program says, and all about what you do when you play.

I'm not sure how Illinois having 2 good players that force opposing defenses to make decisions would affect what Michigan's roster looks like, but maybe I'm missing your point there.

Michigan lost more production than probably any team in the entire nation (Lendeborg, Morez, Mara and 2 super senior gaurds) and hasn't done much to replace it.
Michigan is #2 in the overall 247 recruiting rankings. Yes they lost a lot, but I'm not sure how you can say they haven't done much to replace it. There's only one team ahead of them, Duke. Plus with Dusty May's track record of being a great coach, it shouldn't be surprising to see them in the top 5.

If I had to guess, they run a 1500m and called it a mile (since the 1500m is the Olympic standard event they run in college). That'd put Ben at around 4:40 or so for a mile, which seems reasonable, still impressive for his size, but not outlandish.

Source: 4:35 mile personal best

It cracks me up that some people on here don’t know how hard 4:19 mile is. Ben is a massive basketball player not a track guy.
4:19 is an incredibly good mile time but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility for a D1 basketball player to do.

Especially so a guy with long strides like Ben. Has the build to be a good mid distance runner tbh.

Every single guy on my high school basketball team except one ran a sub 6 minute mile. The only guy that didn't was a chubby backup center and he was still like 6.5.

A couple guys ran sub 5s and none of us were D1 caliber athletes(the one kid was flirting running sub 5 in 8th grade track).

I feel completely differently. Unless an athlete is training to run that distance or longer at a fast pace, you just won't see D1 basketball conditioned athletes just trot out and run a sub 4:20 mile on the track. Basketball conditioning is completely different than miler conditioning...short bursts, fast twitch, and hops are focused on over the sustained effort needed to be able to run that sort of mile time.
