This absurd foul called on Z the possession before on the clean block played a huge part in that calamity too.
It was called on Ben. This was the foul (called):

This was Ant Wright’s breakdown of the play:

He definitely points out Andrej wasn't positioned well to pick him up off the screen, that was the key part of the entire sequence imo because unless you just put 2 on Dent he is getting the ball. You can argue put Big Z down on the other end of the floor, but then you don't even get a contest on the shot at all, so I dunno?

Honesty kinda reminds me of how Florida lost to Iowa.

In hindsight. I’d just prefer not even have a man up, and overcrowd your half of the court or if you are gonna press, just sell out and double team dent.

Make him pass and if a secondary guy hits an open but long 3, so be it. Ironically though, we probably got the friendlier path because of that play anyway (my guess is we would have flip flopped with Purdue on the seed line)

I haven't gotten a chance to watch the video yesterday but the biggest issue is how Boswell is guarding Dent imo.

He should be up on Dent on the inside part of the court denying the entry pass and forcing them to inbound the ball towards the short side of the court and make Dent catch the ball coming back towards the inbounder or towards the near sideline where you have Ben positioned to help.

You can make an argument that they should have a guy on the inbounder as well but the one thing you can't do is let them inbound the ball to the middle of the floor while at speed.

The not allowing the deeper catch at 3/4 speed is good

Just putting two guys on Dent prevents that too

Thing I can go either way on is having Z on the inbounder vs at the other end anticipating a shot attempt

The bottom line is the 2023-24 and the 2025-26 teams both should have won 30 games and the 2025-26 lost at least a share of the conference championship by blowing 4 games because of their terrible defense. Illinois should have finished no worse than 19-1 after losing to Michigan.

You can have Tomi on the inbound and Z protecting the rim.

I don't think it matters who's on the inbound as long as it's someone there. The pass just can't be so in rhythm. But Tomi would be ideal there, I think.

PLEASE! I was at this game. I was screaming my lungs out for 40 minutes. I parked a mile away and had to ride a shuttle bus with joyous UCLA fans then walk the remaining distance on tired feet. I don't want to relive ANY aspect of this game.
LOL, I was thinking the same thing. Some of us had to drive back to San Diego after this game... the postgame show with LaTulip uncharacteristically went over 2 hours that day, so at least we had something to listen to.

This board had back to back mental breakdowns in wins against PSU on the road and home against Rutgers where we won by 8 and 26 respectively.

So I have little doubt that sentiment would show up long before a final four lol.

I still think the PSU postgame thread might have been peak Illini loyalty embarrassment for me. And I say that with love
You are right. It probably comes back after the 1st loss of the season. Call it Illini insecurity. I must have opened a Pandora box.

What's next - looking for the next in line to be the 10th man skilled worthy? Consider this - use whoever is skilled within the (whole) roster as the next man up to do the job where needed.
or just trust the coaches that are getting paid millions. This roster is ridiculously good. Top 4 in the country to start the season and people still think we have holes lol
