I like “loss insurance.” Good way to put it. But while the rest in that sentence is true in general, do you really think the Illini being just out of the top 25 for a couple of weeks is going to hinder its recruiting? So we should brace for down recruiting this summer?

Sure in general it is better to be ranked early, but I really don’t think it matters that much. Someone above said “To 90% of college fans, they don’t pay any mind to programs that don’t show up in the top 25 feed.” For the most part, college fans watch who they have interest in. I just saw that Cinn is rated #17. I live in Ohio, and having that knowledge now is not going to make me want to watch them more. Why? Cuz I have no interest in them. I’d say that is typical of most fans. They follow/watch their team(s) and then teams from the same conference(s) as their team.

What creates meaningful exposure as far as fans and recruits are concerned is the NCAA tournament and last third or so of the season. If this year’s team ends up being as good as we hope, not being ranked for first two weeks of season isn’t going to make a bit of difference. And if we’re not as good as we hope, being ranked #24 or #23 this week isn’t going to matter either.
I would prefer that we were ranked. At some point down the road, I want an announcer to say, "the Illini have now been ranked in the top twenty five for ____ straight weeks, tops in the nation."
That would be nice for recruiting.

A couple of things about the Ole Miss loss that I think some people are overlooking. One is that, as I understand it, and I definitely could be wrong, is that the Ole Miss loss should, technically, or in theory or whatever, have absolutely no impact on Illinois’ ranking. Nothing. Of course, the real world doesn’t work that way. But no voter should have taken that loss into consideration. They should have wiped it from their minds afterward. Also, based on some of the comments BU made after the game, it seems that he did not care much if Illinois won or lost. It sounds as if he did not make any adjustments, didn’t do a lot of preparing for what Ole Miss was going to throw at Illinois, and kind of just let them play one-on-one. Like a pick-up game. I think he thought it would be a good learning experience. I mentioned this in some other post, maybe here, or another thread, but I am not the only poster who mentioned that.

This is Marcus Domask erasure. Like c'mon, dude was 1st team all-BIG Ten.
Not to mention that it's pretty presumptuous to state that our current players are "upgrades" over all but one of last year's elite 8 squad after we've played a couple of cupcakes. Can we at least wait until we've played our non-conference schedule before assigning labels please? Or is that too much to ask?

I don't even want to know how this was created or where you found, I love it. If this is something that has been posted in the past and I just missed, shame on me. Otherwise, this needs to be a weekly.(y)(y) We should keep an eye Earlham college in the SOS at selection time.

Ohia deserves to be ranked, so if we get in, then we probably knock out someone who did nothing to deserve it.

We'll know a lot more after next week and so will the voters. If we show up versus Bama, we'll be on the national map. If we get boat raced, not so much.
I was unfortunately stuck longer in Champaign last weekend, but was fortunate enough to get a second row courtside seat to the EIU game. I can't wait to see how they perform against a big time competition, but that basketball athleticism, size, and skills all the way down to 8-9-10 man, is so impressive. From just watching a lot of basketball for a lot of years, I think they can put any 5 players out there, based on matchups, and they are a top 15 team right now. My son (non-Illini) watched that and other games, and agreed.

I agree. But last year, some on here were saying that Kansas game should mean something to the voters. Even toward selection time.

It is a charity, pre-season scrimmage, not a game, at a lot of levels the polite/right thing to do is let the hosts win.

Have never bought this excuse. Brad will have the guys hungry regardless of their rank, and being in the top 25 is objectively good exposure for this program. To 90% of college fans, they don’t pay any mind to programs that don’t show up in the top 25 feed.
I disagree when it comes to a young team like this. They don't need to get full of themselves and thus, I think it's good that they aren't ranked right now. They haven't arrived yet.

National rankings only really matter on Selection Sunday.

The only team that has made an impression on me is Duke. Don’t like them but Kneuppel and Flagg have been impressive. Also been impressed by Rutgers Harper although not by the team without Bailey. Just don’t know who we have to guard big shooters. Maybe Tre but undersized, but Corey just isn’t strong enough. Think Tomi or Rez can guard centers but guys like Renn Will be tough one on one.

We are looking better than I expected at this point of the season. Gellin’ like a felon! Seriously, not a lot of people are taking a hard look at us because they see how many returning players we have and move on. Rankings right now mean little to me. It matters in December when the football fans start tuning in and the recruits pay more attention.

I can not wait until we start hearing all the non-Illini college basketball fans and announcers watch our games and take notice talking about Riley and Kasparas and butchering his name ‘discovering’ possibly one of the best PGs in the country. Ben’s name butchering will be entertaining as well.

I think this is pretty much correct. I have to admit though that I find it pretty amusing that fans are more than willing to write this game as meaningless, but last year’s win over Kansas was seen as almost equivalent to a late December win. We fans gonna fan.

Mid December is when the AP poll starts correlating to end of year results. Enough games will have been played by then to start sifting the good teams from the bad teams. Right now it is still in beauty contest phase.

IF all things sports break our way this week, we could have Men's Hoops, Women's hoops, and Football all ranked at the same time. Had to have been a minute since that ever happened.
That's actually a good question, but might be limited by how far back they started doing women's bball rankings.

I think the best chance would have been in '85, as I know the football team was ranked at some points during the season and we ended up 5-2-1 in conference including a win over #5 at the time tOSU and made the Peach Bowl. The men's bball team was ranked during the non-conf part of the season until mid-January before we fell out but then popped back into the rankings again to end the season, making it to the 2nr round of the Tourney. The women's team is hard to find any information on specific to the season, but they ended up 20-10 that year (3rd in the Big Ten) and made the second round of the Tourney, as well.

Also, Illinois wrestling is ranked 17th and the Volleyball team may be ranked soon. They seem to be playing better and beat a ranked team (USC).
Illinois golf ranked 11th
