Yeah the NCAA tournament is the key. I feel like last year did far more for the programs exposure with the elite 8 run then the 2021 team that was a 1 seed with Ayo and Kofi. What creates meaningful exposure as far as fans and recruits are concerned is the NCAA tournament and last third or so of the season. If this year’s team ends up being as good as we hope, not being ranked for first two weeks of season isn’t going to make a bit of difference. And if we’re not as good as we hope, being ranked #24 or #23 this week isn’t going to matter either.
It is an interesting situation. They are as deserving right now of being #22 as we are. I mean Illini beat two cupcakes and a lot of basketball fans would say the same thing about our roster. What did St John's do to be ranked 22nd?
I only recognize one player on their roster and they beat 2 cupcakes.

They picked up some nice transfers — kid from Seton Hall, one from USC and Smith from Utah, who is a real nice player. They had more returning, but none of the returnees were great last year. A couple of them though have seemingly taken nice steps forward.
The interesting thing is why did they jump over us — went from 1 point behind Illini to around 30 more this week. East Coast bias maybe? Last I looked they weren’t beating Wagner by much. When we beat Alabama, we’ll jump over them.
EDIT: Just checked and up by 20 over Wagner.
Currently 17 in KenPom, I’ll allow it. Indiana OTOH, 40 in KP, but 16 in the AP.It is an interesting situation. They are as deserving right now of being #22 as we are. I mean Illini beat two cupcakes and a lot of basketball fans would say the same thing about our roster.
