Illini were around 40 in final regular season AP poll. I believe the Illini will have a lot of votes for the final polls, but there is too much ground to make up to get a small number. I think Illini will land in the 25-30 range.

Long way to go until we can predict preseason polls. We were blessed and cursed this season with sky high preseason rankings. Hopefully we will be one of the under the radar teams to do damage next season.

Fairy eggs, wolf bane, dragon's blood and the ever popular eye of newt are what go into these polls. Very difficult to quantify and organize these data points.

On to next year and more improvement.

Idk, I think we deserve to be unranked based on, if nothing else, the loss to Wisconsin. It is/was inexcusable, especially since it wasn't even a close loss. We also didn't only lose to Indiana, we got demolished by them, on a nationally televised night game

USC choking to TCU ultimately kept the Illini out of the final AP top 25 (by 2 votes!).
So many bowl results went against us. It felt like every single bowl was a competitor for a slot in the 20's winning, usually beating a team ranked too high to fall below us. I thought SMU and Washington would snake us too, I'm actually surprised we got so close.

Houston-LSU, Iowa-Vandy, North Texas-SDSU, Virginia-Mizzou, also all really close games that sneak us in at 25 if they tilted the other way.

bummer. would have been good for optics to finish in the top 25.

in hindsight we got over punished for getting beat (destoyed) by an underrated IU team at the time, which ultimately impacted our ranking the rest of the season

The only one that's really bothersome is USC finishing ahead of us. Although, Washington could say the same about us.

At the end of the day, #26 feels right. It just stinks to not have ranked bookends On to next season!

i agree with this 100%. we went into the IU game confident (especially me) - everyone felt we had a historically crazy easy schedule... and it turns out our schedule was not that easy, indiana was crazy good, we got crushed, and we were always playing from behind the rest of the year. well said.

I don't think we got "over punished" for that loss (early season games are always very volatile for rankings). What dragged us down the most was playing defense optional @Washington and then whatever you call the @Wisconsin debacle (both 17 point losses). The Illini were still in the top 20 until the loss vs OSU and then fell out after losing to Washington the week after.

I actually think it is an amazing accomplishment to be anywhere near the top 25 with four losses by an average of 26 points. I think anywhere from 20-30 was justifiable ranking for this Illini squad. The truth is that the the Illini were getting plenty of respect from the national media and coaches going into the season, and mostly throughout the season as well.

Mostly true, except if Mizzou wins they take our spot anyway, probably ending up top 15, because SEC. Even after ending 8-5 and winless vs teams with winning records, they still got 8 votes which is really something.

Would be nice to see a top 25 but tbh in this playoff era the final poll is among the most meaningless things in sports. Heck other than the final 4 no one has played in darn near a month & 3,000 players have switched teams in the portal. The carryover effect is minimal at best vs the old days.

Bret has a tangible product to sell based on his record regardless of a # next to the name in the final poll or not. Just keep upgrading so we have a shot in those high profile spots more often & have enough overall talent to overcome the Wisconsin type of disaster performances.

FWIW: Sagarin. Not much difference between #21 and #30. PSU's gotta be the highest-ranked 7-6 team in history.

How does Sagarin work again? I'm not going to get into a long debate over it, but it's odd to me that Illinois is #27 and Tennessee is #23 when according to these numbers, Tennessee had a weaker schedule than Illinois AND did worse in said schedule. Not to mention Illinois beat Tennessee. I just don't understand the algorithm.
