It was an embarrassment, but Cignetti's statement didn't make it any more embarrassing, especially when he is not wrong. No top ten B1G team should give up over 60 points to any team, not even the 2019 LSU team.

But this game is in the rearview mirror. It does make the USC game much bigger than a simple win or a loss for us.

Cignetti seems to have no filter. (Aside: no class? Not sure I didn't even know who he was until last season, but he comes off let's say somewhat brash to me in the few press conferences of his I have caught.) Anyway, he espouses the outside perception I was speaking of to a T.

I wonder if that has prevented him from getting bigger jobs in the past. I have to imagine he's the same way in interviews. I know Cincy had a chance to hire him and didn't.

I'm sure people will look past that now with how he's been winning, and I'm sure he'll be in high demand. I can see him fitting very well in the SEC, but you never know, Indiana has deep pockets, and he might choose to stay in the B1G.

I don't think it has anything to do with Bret and staff and more to do with playing in a tough road environment. Cignetti is undefeated when playing at home with his now best win against Illinois.

They have not had a road win against a very good team in years. Last season they won @UCLA, @NW, and @Michigan State. All three of those teams were not good, and IU won by heavy margins. They lost both road games against great competition (@OSU and @ND). It is one thing to win the home games and something entirely different to win on the road in the B1G against top-tier competition. Going into Kinnick and coming away with a win is no small task, no matter how good your team is.

I think it is coach speak for his team not to take anything for granted, as well as preparing their fanbase for the possible letdown game in the pink walls locker room.

Cignetti understands the assignment. Illinois and Indiana are both trying to ascend to the upper tier of Big Ten football, and there's probably only room for one of us. We're direct competition for attention, hype, recruits, transfers, etc. Anything he can do to push down Illinois, will benefit Indiana. We should be mad only at ourselves for giving him such a golden opportunity.

Meh. This is just kinda his deal. When they lose at PSU and Oregon he’ll be trying to sell the hell out of this win.

If he truly thought that way about our staff, then he wouldn’t have been playing so nice the week leading up to it. He’s a good coach, but he’s about a big of front runner as is.

LOL.... My grandchildren are nearly your age - 30 ... so pardon me, but you are YOUNG... which is great.. And as I said: I appreciate your enthusiasm.. truly...And I hope your future experiences are far greater than the ones your dad experienced.. And I do appreciate coach B's battling the reputational challenges... as I indicated: I think overall, he's the best head coach we've had since Ray retired... Yes, many times in the past the coaches we hired didn't always have the total support of the 'suits/academics' but I believe that with Josh at the helm, those problems are behind us.. And I'm pretty sure the water isn't any different in Champaign than it is in Columbus or Austin or Miami... Please... Please keep up the good fight !

It’s genius marketing … You just beat the 💩 out of a “top 10” team … Who just happens to be Illinois … Who also is in a lot of recruiting battles with you …

Continuing to pump that into the veins of fans and recruits is EXACTLY what he should be doing …

He’s earned that right …

This is dead on. Would we not want Bret saying the same thing if we WON 63-10? When you beat a team by 53, a "subtle jab" is more than earned... lol

But me, personally? No. I would have felt the same if Brad Underwood made a similar jab after the Assembly Hall beat down.
I think the result speaks louder than words.

We don't need to debate individual ethics on the topic. 🤣 Everyone was raised different.

I mean I agree that he shouldn't come outright and just TRASH Illinois football, but saying "tougher than the last one, that's for sure"? I just think it's sensitive to think that can't be said or crosses some sort of line.

All that aside, I'm excited to see what Bielema has them ready for on Saturday. I believe an old saying applies to everybody once in awhile "It's been too long since you had your @$$ kicked".

Well... that happened Saturday night. How do they bounce back? We'll see.

Obviously there's multiple ways to do this coaching thing and be successful, he has the right to say anything.

But there's a reason most of the great coaches would never be caught dead saying something like that (could you imagine Saban doing that? In fact, Saban called him out for exactly for that on tv last year, because Cignetti did put his foot in his mouth a few times). Maybe it gets you attention, but if a recruit is actually truly going to Indiana because of that? Consider me skeptical.

I insinuated that your average casual Illini fan is more fickle than in other states for other state schools; based on my life experiences, that is true. I suppose I could have defined "casual" fan, but I really didn't think I needed to. However, what I meant is maybe someone like my dad on the "less casual" end - clearly an Illini fan/never cheers for any other team, tunes into the games every week, etc. but would never spend any time on a message board as an outlet for Illini passion - and someone like my cousin on the "more casual" end - someone who would say his favorite team is Illinois but isn't going to rearrange a Saturday to watch them if they're not good ... you could call him a bandwagon fan. I don't think it's novel or inventing a "nebulous 'them'" to say that all sports teams have such fans, along with the diehards or crazies (which I would consider ALL of us, by virtue of being here). And as I said above, from my experience the more casual fans in our neighboring states are much slower to disengage when times get tough than Illinoisans are. It's obviously a chicken-and-the-egg story as to how much our history of disappointment plays into that, but my only point was that another loss to USC might be the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of more casual Illini fans who decided to get interested this year because we had hype ... and we need those fans, as they're the ones who bolster our TV ratings and enable us to draw these bigger crowds to Memorial Stadium.

If you want to disagree, then fine ... but your first response to my post was absolutely insinuating that I was like insulting longtime fans here or something ... and I simply was not. You even (sarcastically) apologized for being "fickle," even though I didn't call you or any other fan on this message board fickle in the first place, as I would say it is obvious that anyone spending time on an internet sports message board is NOT a casual fan, by definition.

Let us just put it out there. I am an avid (I was going to say long suffering) fan of over 60 years. I have not jumped off the band wagon. As for the Indiana coach, unless he is the second coming of Knute Rockne or insert name, he will get his come uppance at some point in time.

I was at that game, the talent disparity in every category (size, speed, skill, whatever) was stark.
