We literally lost because we couldn't make a layup or a dunk....2pt shots. Period. If Plummer doesn't pass up 3 of his shots...I think we win....even missing all of those 2pt shots.

Your take is bad because it's not about 3pt shooting vs. 2 pt shooting...it's about lack of flow, rhythm, and consistency. That is the story of this team this year.
I think that's a very fair take. Seems to me that when this team is at their very best, the backcourt (Plummer and Frazier) has really got it going. Success seems to trend with how Frazier plays. Maybe that's just a short sighted approach, but it sure seems like if he plays well, they play well. Consistency has really been a problem.

Curbelo HAS to clean up his game. It's not just dumb mistakes, it's the times of the game of those dumb mistakes. For every nice play he has 3 bad ones. One example, misses front end of one and one, then gets blown by his man for a layup. That's where coach needs to hold him accountable for the mistakes. The Plummer disappearing act is just baffling. But I for one, would love for Curbelo to clean up his game and situational awareness during crunch time. If you take it to the hole, make the layup. Not some cutesy flip in hopes it drops. That's all i got. hopefully the veteran team will show up in the Dance and play a full 40.
1 turnover, 1 steal, 4 assists, 10 rebounds. Clean it up.

I was wondering why it was missing a "STATE" in the middle...

This is demonstrably untrue. The lack of basketball knowledge confidently displayed by some commenters is mind boggling. Good thing BU likes alphas who aggressively push the tempo and make plays.
not at all. Kid plays hard, needs to clean it up and just make the play. Pretty simple. Must have some merit when announcers mention it. Guess we shall see how they respond come next week. Enjoy

Consistent enough to win the conference. So if we were up and down so was everyone else and most of those teams were fully healthy.
It hasn't been consistent. In conference play, they started 10-2 and finished 5-4(including today) down the stretch. This team didn't just lack consistency for games, they lacked consistency by halves. How many times this year were they great in the first half and awful in the second or vice versa. The amount of games where they led by double digits and lost is astounding. It's a tough bunch to figure out. No more room for error anymore. One and done.

What mistakes did Belo have today? He had one glaring turnover on a post entry but other than that I thought we was really good (especially on the rebounding aspect).

He botched a layup at the end. It was a physical mistake which is going to happen. I've pulled my hair out on Belo many times this year but he played really well.
like i have stated. its not just this game. he cleans things up and he could very well be the best PG in the conference. His shot is absolutely broke. Tough kid, just clean things up.

As usual, the fanbase is split today between half full and half empty. Count me as half empty after today I guess. We've seen this all year. We have a ton of talent and guys with a ton of heart. We have not been able to put everything together, consistently for long stretches of the season - hell, sometimes for long stretches of games. Again, not the end of the world to lose in the B10 tournament, but would have preferred tomorrow not today against a mediocre team.

This is a good team, not a great team. Doesn't mean I don't support them and wish the best for them every single game. But it is frustrating to have a two time All American/three time All B10 player, two super seniors, 2 super talented sophomores, and a solid group of freshmen struggling to play consistently well. Yes, we won a share of the B10 for which I'm very grateful. But we did that while losing to Maryland on the road when they were playing nowhere near where they were late in the season, and losing to Ohio St at home in a game we probably should have won. That is fine, those games happen in the B10.

But they have not passed the eye test in the last month of the season. Careless possessions and turnovers, prolonged scoreless streaks, no adjusting for guys like Plummer going cold. These things should not be happening for a team poised to make a long run. Maybe I expect too much, but that is what I am seeing. And it's disappointing knowing we will lose the heart and soul of the team in Trent and be relying on several new guys next year. When will our program put it all together? This is the third time period over the years that I've seen a team with the talent and a realistic shot at winning it all (last year and this year included in this 3rd time period), but I feel that is slipping away yet again. The 2007 team says hi . . . .

No disagreements on his shot being broke. He absolutely needs to improve his mid-range game. But that doesn't take away from the fact that he was really good today on both sides of the floor. He had two bad plays which stick out and other than that he did what we needed him to do.

We would be singing his praises if he made that layup at the end. He just missed it -- that's it.

Illini2010-11

Sugar Grove
As much as I hate any Illini team ever losing to IU, this loss really does not bother me. The team left many points out there with missed open looks and missed free throws, but still only lost by one possession to a team with their backs against the wall! Belo really does make this team so much better when he is in the game, and I can 100% live with that last drive he took. Can't really ask for a better look than that. Only thing that really annoyed me was Plummer getting tentative down the stretch when he had the open shot (need his confidence to hit his open shots next week).

Conference tournaments always draw crazy drama, and we have already seen it happen across almost all major conferences (Big 12, SEC, and B1G). Time to get Grandison healthy (going to need him) and rest the legs for hopefully a long run in the Tourney! Last year the team grinded through the B1G tourney and looked worn out by the time the NCAA Tourney started. The excuse of tired legs is now off the table. Time to shake off the poor shooting performance today and prepare for an extended run in the Tourney.

I trust Brad will have this team ready and hungry next week.

Yes, I watched the entire game and I thought it was painfully ugly. We won, but not a well-played game.
I thought it was a well played game by us. That is how we are going to beat high scoring teams like Iowa. We are not likely beat teams like that 96 to 93.

It has been consistent. We won the damn regular season conference title. You can't get anymore consistent than that. Stop.

How bout that Larry S***head call on Kofi where he negated the basket but kofi shot free throws ....how do you call that ???/.....It was clearly an and 1 3 point possiblity................

I severely dislike all inept refs and Larry S. is the most inept , and with the volumes of bad baggage in his background , anything is possible when he refs a game .....JMHO.................
Larry S has been fired from two other jobs in the last year.

The only thing consistent about this team is Kofi, the rest of scoring comes basically on three pointers, if they fall we win. If they don't fall there is a good chance we will lose.

I just don't get the Curbelo hate in this thread based on his performance in this game. His play completely turned the game around when we were down 6. Yeah, he missed the final layup and he missed the front end of a one and one but he also had something like 5 rebounds and 3 assists in the final 8 minutes and gave us good entry passes to Kofi along with speeding up the tempo. If that layup, which was a high percentage shot by the way falls, he pretty much wins the game for Illinois. For anyone who watched the game today, Curbelo was about as far away from the reason we lost as possible.

It's pretty simple why we lost today- we just didn't make open shots, we were like 2 for 87 on layups, we hit maybe 20% of our open threes, and we bricked a bunch of free throws. That's it. We win that game by double digits most nights. Some days the shots just don't fall. Hopefully we got it out of our system and we heat back up in the tourney. But to blame Curbelo for this loss? I just don't get it- there's just no logic or rationality there unless you're counting turnovers he had 5 games ago in his stat line for today.
Ya I was literally thinking we needed 5 rebounds from Hawkins during that last stretch but Curbelo was the one who stepped up in that department.

We'll agree to disagree here. The Big Ten co-champion should not be a 4 seed in the tournament and they should have beaten Indiana.

Now, I know Kofi was missing in a couple, but I look at:

Cincinnati(double digit lead @ Neutral)
Marquette (double digit lead @ Marquette)
Ohio State(double digit lead @ Home)
Arizona(double digit lead @ Home)
Purdue (double digit lead @ West Lafayette)

Now, let's look at some wins

Northwestern (double digit lead @ home, got to 1)
Maryland (double digit lead @ home in first half, then went down 4)
MSU(double digit lead @ home, won by 1)

Those are all games where "the drought" occurred.

Now, I'm not going to take 15-5 and stick my nose up at it. It's a HUGE accomplishment. They'll be raising a banner and knowing that, to me, makes everything else gravy this year.

That said, this year....each game....has been a roller coaster of emotion because they never could play a full, even, 40 minutes.

I'm trying to be realistic, while at the same time being appreciative of the season these young men gave us.
