rough day for the illini and also for my dad....

The Illini are one very puzzling basketball team.

If they didn't have talent you could say... 'They just don't have talent.'

If they didn't have veterans you could say... 'They don't have upperclassmen to show them the way'.

If they didn't have newcomers that showed they have some Game you could say... 'This team already hit its top ceiling and that's it.'

If they didn't have a good Coach you could say... 'They have no good leadership'.

But the thing is... none of those responses would be true. They have talent. They have veterans. They have young guys with Game. And they have a good Coach.

How does one forget how to make free throws? How does one forget how to play Defense? How does a team go 7 whole minutes AGAIN with no field goals?
This is in the Twilight Zone realm.

One team came to play and another team didn't -- again. One team challenged the other and The Other did not respond -- again. On their hone floor and turf. To a bitter generational rival. The Missouri Game all over again. Twice in one season.

We know each of these guys has strengths and weaknesses. But so do just about every other player in Basketball. You find a way to make the pieces fit. And most of all... you find a way to bring energy and commitment to the Floor every time you take the court.

A Coach can do or say only so much. Then its all on the players.

Someone needs to sit down with each of these guys and figure out just where they are right now in body and spirit. The most important part of the Season still lays ahead. And the Illini can still accomplish great things.

But not with things on their current course.

as far as my dad , I got a phone call tonight and the nurse at the nursing home brought up giving thought to moving dad into hospice care....keep my family in your thoughts and prayers.....

It is real Life challenges like this that put our frustrations with basketball in their proper perspective. Each of us is part of a team that plays much more important games every day than anything we'll ever see with a ball and a hoop.

Good thoughts and Strength to you all.

Here we are a day later and I am still flummoxed by this game. Obviously we defended IU very poorly. But on offense... we had a LOT of good quality shots (including many layups) that just didn't go in. Maybe we still lose when allowing TJD to score 35, but the sheer volume of missed bunnies is mind boggling. The game was honestly a lot closer than it felt based on quality shots. We just missed so many of the easy and open ones.

I mean…I dunno but he probably wanted to? Sometimes you play great when you’re sick. It didn’t work that way this time unfortunately.View attachment 23054
Glad he at least tried. It was apparent to me he was not at full speed. Competitors will often try to play through injuries and illness. If he had sat the game out people probably would be questioning his toughness and desire to compete.

Well, I disagree there. We are more capable w/ this roster at beating guys off the dribble than we have been in the past. It could be that tired legs are part of it and guys just didn't have the juice to beat their man.

I'm more concerned that 1-on-1 basketball is the answer when a team is pressuring the ball like IU does. When a team is putting a lot of pressure on the ball, the answer is to pass less and screen off the ball more.
Dribble drive != 1 v 1 basketball

Funny thing is, this might not be the kiss of death that 8/9s sometimes get. Is there really a 1 seed in the offing that you're scared of? I'm thinking by the end of the year, maybe. Right now, we have a fighter's chance against anyone in the country. Thursday loss definitely in play as well of course.

Still time for us to achieve better consistency, but when the lights come on for that first NCAA game, all bets are off for the very important freshmen.
Purdue. They are the one seed I don’t want (and thankfully won’t likely get as they are in the big ten…but we are Illinois so we’d likely get um 😂 😭)

Apologies if I missed it, but something that hasn't really been discussed is Indiana's 3P shooting. Coming into this game, 4 of their 7 rotation players were shooting 40% or better from three (Bates at 40%, Galloway and Hood-Schifino at 44%, and Kopp at 45%). Shutting down Indiana's outside shooting had to be a major aspect of Underwood's game plan (his post-game comment about TJD's scoring supports this). The problem was Indiana's 12-0 run, half of which came from beyond the arc. Once that happened, Woodson had a major advantage. He could exploit TJD's skill advantage in the post because Underwood would have to weaken the perimeter defense to double-team TJD.

I'm not suggesting some adjustment couldn't have been made, but Underwood was in a pick-your-poison situation. If there's a silver lining, hopefully something can be learned from this game before Tuesday. Ohio St. is a somewhat similar team; a good center surrounded by good 3P shooters (McNeil at 39%, Thornton at 43%, and Sensabaugh at 46%).

This team needs to move to be good. On defense and offense. This reminded me of Penn State again. Pickett just backed us up to the hole one on one and everyone watched him score. No one on defense moved and they scored... That carried over to offense. Stagnant and rushed (give Indiana credit they were good on defense). We already know when we don't move on offense we aren't good, turn the ball over and shoot bad 3s.

Not too sound like Webber but motion! That's the key. This team is needs to be engaged or they fail. I know the team was tired and other excuses but Our defense is supposed to be our backbone but our game plan was not helping bring the team alive

Tired legs turns some of those gambles for steals at the top of the key into breakdowns all over the place. Miss one of those by a fraction of an inch and now you're five feet away from the ball. And vice versa, passes that should connect just don't have enough zip and a swing pass to an open shooter turns into a free possession the other way. And it doesn't make any difference if you double if you're slow getting there and TJD plays with decisiveness. I still come back to a shortened rotation and general mental and physical wear and tear for more of our troubles than anything else. Turn the page, get right for the Buckeyes and keep grinding.

I'll admit, I'm one of those people. Never been overly impressed by TJD but I was last night.
last night was the best game I have ever saw tjd play that good.....if he played most of his games that level then I would have never called him overrated .....but , he doesn't play most games at that level.....he gets his points and rebounds at a above average clip , but if I got a brick for every brick shot I have witnessed him shooting , it would be a building at least 10 stories high.........
I'm done with tjd and overrated stuff....I got other worries a lot more important right now.......thanks for all the support good and bad....i mean that....i really really do..........

JMHO........

Every time I hear this phrase I ponder exactly what other kind of drives there are in basketball
There's a difference between Shannon coming in hard in the middle of the offense and someone standing in one place putting on a crossover show and not going anywhere. In the second case, everyone tends to stop moving and watch; everything comes to a halt on offense, especially rebounds.

Thank You!! SO freaking much. Amen

Crazy Rant:

Exactly right. It’s SO DUMB…but virtually
everyone in the basketball-speaking world…says it even though they know better….Sheep. Lol. (A similar thing is starting to happen with Rick Torbett’s “Read and React offense…you’ve prob. Seen the DVDs…but that’s a story for another time.)

Anyways, you can trace this one back to Vance Walberg’s “Dribbble Drive”offense and it seems to have wormed its way into the hoops lexicon from there…

Why, I don’t know?

Like you said, there’s no other way to drive in the game of basketball without dribbling; is there? DRIBBLE drive…is unnecessary and redundant…not to to mention it sounds ridiculous. A JUMP shot…or SET shot…makes sense…those are descriptors

It dribble-drives me WAY up the wall; more than it should. I’m not crazy about free THROW either…for the record and for obvious reasons…(yes it’s been around forever…but that don’t make it right.)

…in somewhat related news…
I am also lunatic about by:

“Hoodie”and “Beanie.”

It’s too hard to say: “Hooded Sweatshirt” or “Stocking Cap” I guess?

What online soccer mom came up with this cutesy-Q, wussy-sounding, crap anyway? and why did everybody just go along with it?

Have some self-respect people! Good God. 😂 save yourselves…

I was at the game....TJD did whatever he wanted to do....not sure if we would have double teamed him or applied full court pressure sooner if that would have changed things, but I wished we would have tried the full court pressure sooner.....they gave TJD the ball and he backed his defender down into the paint for an easy 4-5 ft jumper...or he'd back the defender down and do a quick spin move and then shoot a layup....we didn't change our defensive scheme on him and Davis made us pay....I think that was the most disappointing thing for me during the game....yea we didn't shoot the ball well, but I'm still not sold on TJD being the best player in the B10....alot of players could have had the type of game he had last night the way we defended him.......hope things turn out well for you Pru......I really really do

I’m gonna chalk this one up to tired legs going against a talented team playing to save their season. We haven’t played well in our traditional rivalry games this year, but when you really think about it, these aren’t rivalry games to anyone on our current roster. Just another game to our guys.

Sincere Harris’s free throw shots tonight were alarming. That could’ve been me out there. Just a fling and a prayer. Not sure how a P5 guard shoots Fts like that. He can’t be in a close game late.

condolences to those whose have just lost a parent or watching them decline. Those of us in our 50s or 60s, that comes with the territory, sadly.

Have you watched our guys at the free "throw" line? More of a throw than a shot...
