It’s best if everyone either has no expectations or lowers them drastically.

Did Mayer get benched again? Been our most important piece the past 2 weeks. He had an off night. Am I missing some other reason why he was on the bench the final 10 or so? If it was him forcing/etc. that he had to sit, might need to hold others on the team to the same standard.
(Apologize in advance if I missed another reason why he was on the bench down the stretch.)

Time to adjust the expectations. Writing is on the wall for this team; very inconsistent mental focus and intensity. Not gonna happen this year.
I still contend its not a lack of effort. We all watched the first two possessions, right? There was no lack of effort there.
My read is that something unexpected happens, and they get tight and maybe start thinking too much. What were we from the line, 9 of 24 or so? That's something going wrong in your head.

We are officially the most inconsistent team in college basketball
When we win, we win big. When we lose…holy moly.

He didn't get a defensive rebound he could have gotten and TJD threw it off him out of bounds. Got pulled and didn't play after that.

Defense, most likely.

Really, not much of anything went right for us today. It was a lot of our own making, but sometimes you just don't have it and we certainly didn't today in all facets. I'll still say that I thought the effort level was much much higher today than in in our previous losses. Just our gameplan and lack of ability to make open shots, layups, or free throws was an awful combination. I don't like losing, especially to the Hoosiers, but I think this is one you just look past and move on. Some days you simply wake up on the wrong side of the bed and not much goes well the rest of the night.

Props to RJ and Sincere by the way. It's tough to play well when your whole team is struggling but I think both of them did. TSJ played well though not really in the rhythm of the offense, though in his defense, there wasn't much of any rhythm to begin with.

He looked like he was sick. Migraine?

Why didn't BU throw the kitchen sink at TJD? It was 1:1 all night... Clearly it was a mismatch with DD... Heck put Lieb out there for a couple minutes just to change his sightlines.

Anyone know why SH is starting over Epps? I love SH's toughness and energy, but Epps is clearly the better ball handler and scorer.

Expectations were unrealistic even before this game. During the 4 game-winning streak we beat:
1. Wisconsin at home while they were missing their best player and they are just an Ok team
2. Nebraska on the road but they are not a good team
3. MSU was a nice home win- but Hall, one of their best players- was out the last 10 minutes or so of that game and we had some home cooking official calls
4. Minnesota is even worse that Nebraska.
Same old story on offense- Many missed layups, FT's, Hawkins passing up open shots and then taking bad ones, untimely, momentum-killing turnovers( even though the total wasn't bad), standing around on offense and then going one on one and forcing up a contested shot.
Today, we got beat on the boards- out-toughed it seemed and obviously had no one to stop Davis or Hood Schifino.
The reality is that we are just an average team who might sneak into the tournament where we'll likely lose in the first round( again) or at most the second- if we get in at all.
So disappointing.

Dain got his first college punch from an All-American. We missed a lot of free throws, lots of 50/50 balls just didn’t go our way. We went down big and although the intensity was high and the boys fought, just not many good offensive possessions. Guys started looking for their own shot again, Epps with a tough game, Trayce blocked and disrupted many shots. Some nights you just get beat. That’s what happened tonight. Still high expectations on the season, don’t worry.

Yes, the FT shooting was terrible, rebounding was terrible, and the offense reverted to hero ball, but the reason the Illini got stomped was the inexplicably horrendous defense. Allowing Indiana to hit 66% of their shots until garbage time is inexcusable.

Harris should be locked in the gym this summer..might want to learn how to shoot the ball if he’s going to be an effective power 5 guard..love the rest of his game though :)

First thought on TJD going nuclear: WAY too much fronting by Dainja and Hawkins that allowed him to just spin off and go baseline for a wide open dunk. You could read TJD’s lips at one point regarding Dainja “I can’t move him.” I get it, he’s making everything, but play him straight up and make him hit the hook shot falling away to the FT line instead.

Our team is too emotional on offense when things don’t go right on defense. TSJ and Mayer have a tendency to go hero ball when we get down 10-15. Offense looked like it did against Missouri. Just bad. I’m glad Shannon plays with heart, but our “game-plan” once we’re down 10+ can’t be him ripping heat check threes and bulldozing at 100MPH in transition in a 1 on 3 scenario.

A lot of “things went right for them and things didn’t go right for us” kind of night. Fought like hell when it was already too late (and IMO we got A LOT of favorable calls). Reminded me of the Ohio State game last year.

I like this team and what it’s capable of, but we are just way too inconsistent. Some of that is playing a lot of freshmen, but our effort is too inconsistent, when we decide to run offense is too inconsistent, and our wavering ability to respond to adversity is too inconsistent. This team feels like an 8 or a 9 seed in the tourney this year that could beat someone they shouldn’t if Mayer or Shannon hit shots. I don’t know if we have the pieces or collectiveness for something beyond that.

This team (and staff) are such an enigma. They look great one night, then just disappear the next night. Not sure what to expect from them on a daily basis.

All I know is that once March rolls around, it’s gonna be a roller coaster. Plus most of us will be drinking and edibleing a lot more.
I see your point, but Minnesota and Nebraska are not good at all. IU definitely played with a chip on their shoulder and the Illini had nothing.
