Of course its more than 1 play. What i was sayimg is that the pick 6 changed everything. I could tell our confidence was gone after that play. That started the blowout. We have to be mentally tough to withstand those things. But again with a team full of freshman its tough

Im actually very encouraged after watching this game. Still very frustrated though here is why.

#1 JGJ is the hands down better option over chayce crouch. Even though the score doesnt reflect i believe we should have won this game even by more than 1 score. If this were a team full of JRs n Srs we win in a blowout.

#2 Losing culture is why we lost. This game was decided by 1 count it 1 play the pick 6. After that pick 6 we gave up. The leaders of this team especially the defensive leaders need to keep these guys fired up no matter the situation. That pick 6 took the air out of the whole team. And whats worse is Bonner was WIDE OPEN but JGJ threw a bad throw to Dorsey instead of an EASY TD to Bonner.

#3 this team is DEFINATELY getting better we just have to play through the frustration. The score doesnt reflect but before that pick 6 we were doing very well even with the mistakes we SHOULD have took a 20-17 lead instead we went down 24-10 and the air went out the team.
I agree with you. But not to be overlooked is our lack of depth. We wear down as the game goes on because of it. As we use our young guys & bring in another good group or two, that shouldn't be an excuse in the next couple years.

Can,t understand Lovie calling 2 timeouts before halftime when they have the ball over midfield. I bet Iowa lets the clock run and don't get the td before the half. Even if they actually punt, we likely get the ball on our 10 and run the clock out ourselves, If Iowa does not use their timeouts when we get the ball.

Cllearly we played decent in the 1st half. We have plenty of issues without the coach adding to them.

Go ILLINI!

Different play call as a runner vs as a receiver or a passer. Could maybe be close to a late hit but not targeting

To anyone who thinks it wasn't targeting, put your head inside of Chayse's helmet.

the score of the game to me really doesnt show how this game went. We gave up a pick 6 and had a td called back, take both those plays away and were up by what 10 at the time. And who knows how JGJ would be playing right now had he been able to play the first 2 chump teams, as well and NEB. So he threw 3 int. We ran the ball well because we had a guy in who could throw it down field and to his guys all over the field, made it way harder for IOWA to just worry about the run. JGJ has to be given a chance, had they gave him the job last year and just left it to him starting this year who knows how far along the team might be. I for one think we would of beat NEB with JGJ at QB and I think todays game would of been diffrent had he had more time before today

I realize the timing was bad for the interceptions and the pick 6 turned the game but, it isn't like other successful teams aren't throwing some interceptions. How many did Michigan throw last night? Part of the reason they lost but, they were highly ranked and it happens to them too.

Sure would like to have the Nebraska game back and try it with JGJ at quarterback. The offense looked a lot better to me with him out there. Hopefully experience helps cut down the TO's. Wish the experience would have started earlier in season.

Sorry if already asked and answered, but did Mike Epstein get hurt?

Why did the kid only get 7 carries?

It was targeting. Led with his helmet into offensive players head.

It was helmet to helmet contact

It should have been called

I absolutely hate the rule though, for this exact reason

Was at the game and didn't have the benefit if replay, so I'll ask. How do you have an illegal man down field on that slant for a TD?

Just to add to what's already been said, this was the third time that Lowe did this. The first time, there was no call but Iowa complained (rightly so). The second time, he was a mile downfield and got called. This was the third time and there aren't many excuses at this point. He was too far downfield and should have know by this point. He also had a very ill-timed hold later. Rough baptism for the young man. Not going to be fun for him in the film room this week but hopefully the downfield stuff gets fixed quickly.

+1. The offense was night and day from last week (at least the first half). The credible threat of a passing attack really helped open up space for our excellent running backs. I thought we did very well against a much tougher defense than we've faced previously.

I said before the switch that JG was a turnover machine. Even though we have a slim chance with him at the qb, he at least makes it interesting so he gets my vote. Somewhere along the line he will have a good game and we will upset somebody.

I hope so too, but there has been nothing to indicate that will be the case.

He hit him hard with his shoulder. It is tackle football.

I've watched the gif roll through and his head was down when he hit Chayse's helmet with his. I kind of thought that was a major element. Yeah, it's tackle football, but somethings are beyond the pale, and that was IMO one of them.

Perhaps he didn't intend to do it, but that's the rule now.

I’m kinda in the same boat. Also thought he showed enough mobility to at least not be a statue like Lunt. He also showed some toughness by delivering the ball despite taking a shot here and there. Lots to get better at with some current positives as well.

There is no rule prohibiting helmet to helmet contact. There are two main types of targeting. The first one is hitting anyone anywhere with the crown of the helmet. The second one is hitting a defenseless player in the head or neck area (and it doesn't have to be hitting with the helmet). An example of a defenseless player is a receiver who hasn't turned into a runner. Chayce would not be considered defenseless when he was hit.

1. George needs to play at least two games in a row to develop some chemistry with his receivers. Early in the year announcers were remarking about the chemistry between roommates Chayce and Dude. How did that work out? Give him some time with the first squad before pulling him.
2. I blame the staff for the fourth down play. It should been a no return formation. Let the ball land where it will. Just get it back! For me this was the turning point.
3. I look on the DVD and the O line player was 4 yards past the line of scrimmage. BS call by weak-kneed refs intimidated by Ferentz.
4. Our receivers looked to be mugged all day long.
5. I'm so proud of our kids!

Not to pick nits but the rule for college lineman is they can only go 3 yards downfield. If he was four, it’s clearly the right call.

Definitely agree with point 5 though.

George gives you a chance to win games. You have no chance with Crouch. That's the predicament. George is the obvious answer at QB. You live and die with him from here on out.
I don't see why people are saying this. You actually have less of a chance to win if the quarterback turns it over four times, including a pick six. The turnovers are demoralizing to the team, you could see it in how the last 20 minutes of the game played out. George has what, six starts now with 5 tds and 10 ints and I don't know how many fumbles. He is not a Div. I caliber qb. He doesn't have the arm strength. The offense won't be any good until they get a decent quarterback, and apparently that quarterback is not on campus yet.

1. I do think Illinois got homered on a few calls. I thought the late hit in the endzone on Iowa's first td was a bad call, Illinois had a running back blatantly hit in the head after being tackled (can't recall who), and if you are going to call the lineman illegally downfield so closely on a td play, than you damn well better be calling it all the time on both teams.
2. Thought the offensive line did a great job most of the day until Illinois had to pass every down in the fourth quarter.
3. The middle of the field has been wide open against the Illini defense all season. They need to do something about the crossing routes and the pick plays.
4. Either Illinois has a horrible special teams coach or the players have a poor football IQ. The onside kick was an obvious possibility after the Iowa kickoff was moved up by the Illini penalty, and the fake punt was a no brainer. Half of the Illini fans watching had to have been yelling "Fake! Fake!" at the tv before it happened.

I've gotta say, we are way ahead of where I thought we would be. That was a winnable game. Our young guys look REALLY good given the deep end they're being thrown into.

Excited for the remainder of the season.

You're right. This offense is going to struggle with either George or Crouch in at QB. That's not the point. You have to play the best players you have. Personally, I'd rather lose on a pick 6 then to be thankful we even crossed midfield in the first place. Neither QB is the answer for this team, but George gives you a shot to win because he makes the team two dimensional.

Bottom line is Crouch has had plenty of time to showcase his arm and it's been highly unimpressive. It's time to move on.
