I've never liked the foundation of your argument. In addition to never playing ball at this level, I've also never piloted a 747. But when one crashes, do I have to be a pilot to know something went wrong? I've never been a chef, but I can tell you when the food is no good. Your argument really makes no sense. When we see a much more talented Illini team lose to inferior teams, we should be able to comment on that without being accused of "vitriol." If the players and staff continue to let guys go off for 30+ points and think that's a winning formula, then Loyola 2.0 here we come.

Clearly the refs missed the foul on Hawkins, but I think that's one that the refs swallow the whistle on 8 times out of 10 near the end of the game. It just so happens that in this case the foul is what caused his hand to knock the ball out of bounds. It's kind of silly when you can clearly see 2 things occuring on a replay, but have to ignore one of them and overrule a call based on the other.
There will be a new Illinois inducted rule..if a foul is the reason for the ball going out of bounds off a player..the foul will not be called but the team will get possession.

And 9 times out of 10, the call will go against the Illini when that type of play is under review.

Coleman plays with the passion that we need from everyone on the floor. Offensively, he needs to be ready to shoot every time he touches the ball, like Mayer. I feel like he is not ready to shoot when he gets the pass. Anticipation and readiness off the ball on the offensive side. He took a 35 footer yesterday, and I was ok with it because it was in flow and online (btw, a great weak side tip in by Ty). The off ball movement on the offensive side needs to get a lot better, the ball is too stagnant at times [although Epps is a magician].

One other take away from yesterday - why are we not attacking the rim on the press. No excuse for this team not being aggressive against the press, we looked timid and unsure of ourselves at times. Need to be ready for more pressure down the road because unfortunately, it took us a while to get settled in to our half court offense.

A lot of chatter on Twitter today about illini players' families complaining about Illini fans sending DMs to players attacking them. Hope they're able to catch them. It's especially nonsensical because yesterday was actually a high for the Illini, not a low. They played hard and well throughout the game and are on route to peaking at just the right time. People need to look at the overall picture!

Ugh. That’s awful. It’s one thing to “critique” on a message board, but an entirely different animal to directly message and criticize a player. There is a huge difference offering constructive criticism versus DESTRUCTIVE criticism. That’s is not being a “fan.” It’s being an abusive jerk…

I agree with vast majority of this post except for Hawkins needing to look to score. If the defense leaves him open for a quality look then sure take it. Other guys need to take most of our shots. If the defense gives him a good look find but but looking to score or taking some of these bombs isn’t his strong suit. If Hawk plays hard, makes smart plays, takes what the defense gives him by taking quality looks that will make us better. If your open don’t pump fake take it but if it’s a bomb or more than a dribble or two then pass. Our top scorers I hope to see taking most of our shots are Mayer, TSJ (draws a ton of fouls), Epps and Dain. Hawk can put up shots when they are good looks as can Goode. I don’t think Hawk needs to be looking to get up shots but just take quality looks. He can shoot the ball at times but isn’t as efficient a scorer as some of other guys. Hawk does several things very well and is a key to our success for sure. If he plays to his strengths and limits careless mistakes we can be much better. He has been trending in that direction and Mayer, Dain, Epps, and TSJ have gotten more shots up. We shot the ball well. The careless mistakes, poor passing, back court and fouls over all is why we lost this game.
I agree with your post. I wasn't stating that CoHawk needs to force anything or become our top scorer or anything like that. There are many examples this season of him being too passive when he gets in the paint. A great example was during yesterday's game he had a point blank look at the rim and dished it to Dain about 7-8 ft. from the hoop and we ended up getting nothing out of the possession. Even the announcers stated that CoHawk should've shot it. When we get to the dance good defensive teams will key on Mayer and Shannon and take them away. Really good defensive teams will take away Epps and possibly Dianja too. We'll need CoHawk to be more aggressive offensively. I don't like all of the threes that go up - especially the really deep ones. I prefer when he gets to within 7-8 feet, especially inside 5 ft he looks to shoot. If he becomes that sort of weapon it'll give a ton of offensive rebounding opportunities to Dain, Mayer, Rogers, etc. as well. Just think if Hawkins becomes a solid threat within 8 feet. How are you going to stop us then? As great as Epps has been, and he's been great, he's still a freshman. Come post season, it's a lot to ask a freshman to be a go-to guy. Don't get me wrong, I hope he's a star in the post season, but it's asking a lot for a freshmen to be one of our stars in the post season. All I was saying is we need CoHawk to be a big threat when he's inside 8-10 feet. I'm really excited about this team. And CoHawk has been very good - he can definitely do a little of everything. But if we're going to be an Elite Eight type of team or better CoHawk needs to be more aggressive offensively. If he is, how do they guard 4 other scorers in Epps, Shannon, Mayer, and Dain? Answer is, you can't.

No excuses. Can't close it out and too many fouls.

Surprised that Goode did not make an appearance to alleviate the foul troubles and bring a boost.
Hoping we get out in front of Minny early so Goode can see the court for a few short bursts. IMO, putting him in this game would have been a disaster unless it was for 30 to 60 seconds which would have been impossible. Anyone who has run or worked out in anyway knows just 2-3 weeks off (not to mention an injury) can really set you back. Can't imagine not running for 2 months and then having to run even a 5K.

Thank you. I’d say the officiating was inconsistent, but it wasn’t the reason the Illini lost. We had one more foul and they shot I think 7 more free throws. That is what Iowa does — gets to the line and makes them. And I agree with something Bardo said (not totally blaming refs and agreeing with Bardo in same post, crazy I know) during the broadcast. Illini had some really dumb, ain’t no doubt about it, ill-advised and -timed fouls. And it happens every game. It was made worse because we know what Iowa does and we help the cause with dumb fouls.

Exactly. This game was a carbon copy of the NW game. There's a fine line between smart and dumb fouls on the defensive end and we had more of the latter in this game.

That was a great college basketball game yesterday, and I would love watching a game like that anytime. The team played hard and there were some elite individual efforts. I am disappointed we lost, but this the BIG and that will happen. We have some outstanding coaches in this league. The officiating was inconsistent and inept, but the Iowa free-throw shooting and a host of WTF passes for turnovers did us in. We wouldn't lose that game on a neutral or home court. I am pleased with the effort and development of our freshman. Need RJ to get out of his own head, he is a good shooter. He will get there, one big game will open the floodgates. ILL!!

I agree with all this, Coleman has some frustrating moments every game but makes so many outstanding plays we can't afford to not have him on the court. Hope he doing well and back for Minnesota at full steam. I have concluded that roughly 78.64 percent of BIG refs are terrible. I think most try, but are just not up to the job. Just be consistent from end to end and half to half and I will be happy. I am most frustrated by two things: the superstar treatment given to players like Murray (understandable at some level given the money involved in "amateur" athletics), but more than anything calls by out of position officials on phantom fouls. We see a lot of late whistles by the ref with the worst view of the three because they think that must have been a foul and the other refs didn't call it. The other refs didn't call it, because it WASN'T A FOUL YOU MORON.
And the ref missed Epps being fouled on the late 3, because he was watching the ball😡

I really, really hope that this is not the case. Sad and that's being kind.

Only thing I have to complain about is turnovers. Seems we lost composure at bit at the end and did not handle the press as well as we could have. Guys played hard and could have won if a few things went their way. To expect this to hapen on the road at Iowa is a bit much. Really need to be solidly in control to win such games.

I've been saying this all season about the moving picks. It's ridiculous what they are allowing now. When was the last you saw a carry called? There is no way these players are changing direction as fast and often as they do without carrying the ball. I know it's all throughout basketball. Times have changed and I'm old school.
When I played you had to keep your hand on top of the ball at all times when dribbling. Things have changed since the 1800 hundreds

Game thread posting is embarrassing and way over the line ... I really don't understand the hate heaped on our players by supposedly Illini fans..

A certain amount of criticism is OK if it fair criticism to make a valid point and not being used as some kind of weaponized attack against someone. Good criticism is necessary to identify problems and encourage growth and solutions.

But fans of ANY team are not owed or guaranteed any kind of outcome – like wins and titles. These young men are not trying to fail or lose. They are doing the best they can at that moment. They know the kind of remarks that will come with falling short and that puts a negative voice in their heads that just adds to pressures on their performance.

Every fan should feel the freedom to express how they feel. But before expressing oneself you should ask if what you’re going to post is based in actual fairness and a good spirit and not just to vent personal disappointment at not ‘getting what you wanted’.

We know the high level of passion of Illini fans. Sometimes this passion can take a wrong turn. Just stay focused on the beauty of this game and the young men who choose the Illini above all others to play in the Prairie State. And showing the World that Illini fans are in fact the best ball fans on the Planet. Living up to our reputation of being a classy program with high standards and a fan base that always reflects those standards in our actions.

Find ways to built players up, not down. Keep the Illini a place that talented young men want to play for. This is the where the best spirit of criticism comes from.

I was really hoping that this story was just due to a few bad apples and a source of irritation to the parents. This tweet, to me, made this a far reaching news story . Every team has their fair share of fans, that are complete clowns, that feel like they can say whatever they want without consequence. It's 18-22 year old "fans" spewing garbage to 18-22 year old student athletes. I'd sincerely hope that there are no adults that felt the need to send disparaging DMs to players. Heck, if an adult takes the time to seek out how to contact these kids....that's equally as pathetic. I honestly feel sick that OUR team, that represents OUR school and do it at such a high level have to deal with this.

There are adults that do this, have no doubt. I've encountered more than a few IRL.

Agree for the most part. I was hoping just an appearance to kick start the team, give a mental boost. And maybe give a rest for a minute or two for the fouled impaired.
