I agree. I don't think anything will given to him. But he may just have his dad's arm and that might win us a lot of games.

I think the legend of Jeff George has grown a bit out of proportion. Including his year at Purdue he had a collegiate record of 19-15-1. 1989 was huge, no doubt, but George's arm on its own wasn't winning games. Griffith in the backfield kept defenses honest, and he had some great targets (Bellamy, Williams, & Wax) to throw to.

I was born in 89 so I never got to see him play. It was until fairly recently that I found out that he was a number 1 overall pick. I don't know how JR will fair but I've always been a proponent of genetics.

Don't let him kid you... Jeff George was a great quarterback who was only limited by his own ego. That group of quarterbacks including Jeff George, Tony Eason, Dave Wilson and Jack Trudeau was leaps and bounds above anyone else that has taken snaps at Illinois in my lifetime and Jeff George was most definitely at the top of that group. Kurt Kittner was a good college quarterback and was very successful at Illinois but his arm looked like that of a school girl in comparison to George.

No arm or legs, for that matter, on their own will win games. Whether it's a dual threat QB or a pro-style QB, if they can't read a defense, it doesn't matter what they can do with their arm or their legs. JG Jr obviously had a good receiving core in high school so having to be dual threat was not necessary. I've watched his highlights and some game film and when he had to, he scrambled and ran well.

TJ Gaynor gave this assessment:

He makes good reads and understands coverage concepts. When the play breaks down, George flashed a knack for avoiding pressure in the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield. He doesn't project as a threat in the zone read game or on designed runs, but has an excellent feel for the rush and an ability to keep plays alive. There must be a quick release gene in the George family because Jeff can flick the ball downfield in a hurry just like his father. When the situation called for it, he also displayed the advanced ability to throw receivers open -- something you rarely see, even at the college level.

If you've been around organized football for any length of time, you realize name recognition and lineage do matter and the kid seems to have the right stuff. My money is on him getting the opportunities for now even if Lovie eventually brings in a recruit who is touted as a dual threat player. I believe Fitzgerald, Peters and Mussat (who I had forgotten to mention earlier) saw the writing on the wall. You don't have a mass exodus like this from most schools even with a coaching change. The stars are aligned and they wanted the opportunity to play.

Is Jeff George Jr. the most hyped 2 star prospect we've ever had?

Maybe he really is leaps and bounds ahead of all the other QB's on the roster, but there has been nothing objective that has indicated that to me.

Seriously. I buy him having a nice arm, but this is the son of a legendarily talented former NFL QB who went to an elite high school program in a major metropolitan area and ended up a 2-star greyshirt. He is not some diamond in the rough.

If he was good enough to make us totally change the system our $900k offensive coordinator wants to run, he should be not just the obvious, publicly stated #2, he should be pushing Lunt for playing time.

Because if Aaron Bailey were still here, that would probably be the case.

If he were George Jeffrey Jr. and not Jeffrey George Jr. we wouldn't even be having this discussion and everyone knows it. Heck, we probably wouldn't even be having this discussion if he were Rick Mirer Jr. or Ty Detmer Jr.

Homerism knows no bounds.

Who is hyping George up? George would be the starter if Lunt got hurt today, but we'd also have to pray to every God we could find to try and salvage the season.

It does say something that this staff likes George better than Crouch though, given everything they do and say would suggest the opposite. What it says, I have no idea.

I'm not sure why people are now assuming this is true.

It isn't true at all.....they are making it look like a battle for the sake of headlines nnd cause his dad comes to practice often...

I've seen george and crouch both and crouch is just better....j.George just throws a pretty spiral...that's about it.....lol...don't feed into the b.s

You and I are getting very different info. Honestly I dont care which one wins out next year, as long as we win games.

You are right its just his name....if you only get a 2 star rating on a powerhouse Indiana team as their starting qb then something iisnt adding up lol

Wow this just made me realize how unbelievably screwed we are at QB next season......

It's not all that bad. Two guys with smaller chances of winning the job saw the writing on the wall and decided to try their luck elsewhere. It happens at every school.

Next year we'll have a RS JR in Crouch, a RS SO in George, a Freshmen in Cam Thomas, Cam Miller for depth, and likely a Juco or Redshirt senior as well. I'm inclined to agree with S&C that the either Crouch or the Juco to be named later will win the job, as the staff has a 2018 qb already in mind that they'll want to start in 2019.

Don't get me wrong, Jeff George winning the job and being a 3 year starter would be awesome and would make a nice story, but I'll believe it when I see it.

It just seems like this has to be the case.

I think the staff likes Cam Thomas more than this board does, but I still get the sense that they're rolling over that new coaching staff mantle of "the guy" to 2018, where it seems like Quincy Patterson is the first choice.

You gotta have something as a bridge to get you there, and while I think this staff wants to lean on jucos as little as possible (much to their credit, IMO), they have no choice at D-line this year, and I think they'd be smart to look for a QB as well.

DJ Gillins formerly of Wisconsin, Aaron Sharp formerly of UCLA, and AJ Bush formerly of Nebraska are all high-major dual threat QB talents who bailed on their schools because they weren't fits with those respective offenses after coaching changes and/or Josh Rosen arrivals who are currently in the Juco ranks looking for another opportunity. They all were safely enrolled and eligible at those respective schools, so you'd figure they would be options from a grades standpoint (many Jucos aren't). I hope we're looking.

I agree wholeheartedly.... They know a dual threat will be their guy...cam Thom's being the number 2 WB in the state of Illinois they had to snag him and he has a change to play in perhaps a YR or two....

This staff will recruit over any of their bemishes

I feel like there has to be a JUCO or Redshirt Senior transfer candidate out there that we're looking at, right?

I've been saying this for a few months now - life "after Wes" is pretty bleak at QB unless you have a patch.

My hope is you get a legit '18 QB who will be ready as a freshman and rely on someone for one year to help you through.

I really liked the candidate that someone tossed out a few weeks ago in Kyle Bolin from Louisville.

McGee didn't recruit Bolin and basically did everything he could to recruit over him and play other guys while he was the OC. He's more mobile than Lunt (everyone's more mobile than Lunt), but still very much a pocket passer. I would be surprised by that one.

I truly believe the plan is for chayce crouch to be the guy cause of his running ability for two yrs unless cam thomas can beat him and George out and they get a judo dual threat qb.....but cam is McGees qb n waiting he loves the kid...and remind an everyone alot of a poor mans Nate sheelhaase
