Wow on Groce's comments about Nichols: "He has exceeded mine(Groce) and the staff's expectations." "he has the utmost respect of his teammates for how hard he works". He stayed on campus for both Summer session I & II. Groce pointed out that he could play some 2, thus showing maybe the most versatile guy on the team.

More versatile than Malcolm? Seems doubtful.

The big question for our Illini team this year will be the same... Health. Two point guards are hurt and not yet full speed, one a sixth year senior who hasn't played in a game in two plus years and a 6th years senior who had a bad knee and is over weight. Those three players will determine our fate... And Groce's

Tracy should be at full speed by the start of the season, don't know about Lucas. I have no expertise on his injury/how long it takes to fully heal. Not worried about Thornes weight, he'll drop the lbs. just hope the big fellas knee holds up

Lucas is more likely to be at full speed by the start of the season than Abrams IMO. It was interesting to hear him being described as explosive though. If there's any truth to that, then I'll be feeling pretty good about this season.

I had the same injury/surgery as Lucas, 12/30/15. I am a runner, who's 50. It takes some time for it to warm up, and is sore from time to time, but it does not stop me from doing anything anymore. I realize the difference in basketball and running/golf, the ligaments and tendons take longer to heal than the ankle. Now, I just have to get my strength/conditioning back. Likely easier for a 17/18 year old.

Do you have screws??

A plate and 6 screws.

I also had a similar injury: broken fibula and tibia, dislocated ankle, 2 partially torn ligaments. I had 3 surgeries and now have a titanium plate and 7 screws permanently in my lower leg. It effectively ended my Illini rugby career (happened at the end of my junior season), which was severely disappointing as I had legitimate hopes of making All-American as a senior. Recovery took a full year. BUT, no real long-term effects: I eventually recovered full speed, strength, and leaping ability. I think mine was a fair amount worse than Te'Jon's. Unless there's a mechanical issue, he should be 100% by the season.

Ouch, you win. Glad you recovered fully.

It could be a very interesting year if this team plays all season with a chip on its shoulder. I have to say I find that thought very appealing after some of the listless efforts we suffered through last year.

Probably most players go into the season believing this year will be different. More intensity. More dedication. Except for maybe Pablo Sandoval (or any one that thinks they can eat all off season and just drop the weight in training camp. :( )

What will make or break the season is how the teams react to the inevitable adversity and distractions. Unexpected injuries. A loss to a lightly regarded foe. Or just the inevitable shooting slumps. Does the player have the maturity to stop jacking up 3 pointers when the shot isn't falling and drive the ball, pull up for a mid-range jumper, pass the ball. We saw in the NBA playoffs repeatedly what happens when a player gets tunnel vision about doing it all themselves when the team is down. Thinking that is leadership.

My two cents.

If the coaching staff is saying it then that means something. More versatile than Malcolm means he's a heck of a player. Like TC said, definitely defensively.

Yeah, that's true...offseason practice reports are the most reliable reports of all

You win, but did you gain weight as a result?

As a 21 year old, I actually lost 20 pounds from muscle atrophy. Had to train and eat like an animal to pack it back on. Now, 15 years later, as a regional marketing manager for a liquor company and a small business owner, married for six years...I'm up about 40 pounds on my college playing weight :D Despite that, I can still show the whippersnappers a few things when I play flag football or pickup basketball. I used to be 215 and dang fast. Now I'm 255 and dang fast for an old guy with a slight beer gut. I'm 6'1 and broad as a doorway with legs like tree trunks, so 255 doesn't look sloppy on my frame. Should still cut back on the beer probably.

I think this is the year we finally win a practice national championship

The practice reports this year have been nothing compared to the reports of Jamar Smith and Alex Legion both being a little better than Steph Curry :D

Well, to be fair, wasn't Steph only in 8th grade or so at the time?:thumb:

Can't compare Jamar and Legion. Jamar proved at Illinois that he could play when healthy.
