Joe was an athletic speciman. I remember the time he leaped over that Georgia Tech player for a layup.

But now...this? I'm speechless. Thought he was overseas. Just sad.

I used to think the Champaign water tasted pretty good. Have they been adding mass quantities of steroids since I left? Between all these domestic batteries and the way our current Illini players have been putting on muscle I'm beginning to wonder!

Assistant State’s Attorney Jacob Croegaert said Bertrand was arrested shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday for an incident that happened with a girlfriend on John near Third Street. Croegaert declined to give details until after a charging decision is made.

Does thiis mean the SA office has had a change in policy, or does it mean this arrest looks a little wonky to them? In all of the previous arrests the articles included lots of the alleged facts which led to arrest.

Understood. Still, when LB, JT & KN were arrested, police released all manner of detail right away. Here? Bupkis. Plus, I think all three posted cash bonds (not 100% sure of this), whereas JB was released on recognizance, which typically indicates a lesser offense. All of this points to the possibility that the evidence in this case is especially slim. This case just might end on Monday.

I am, of course, eternally optimistic on all aspects of Illinois basketball. That might cloud my judgment.

New 12:21 p.m. Monday:

Champaign police said a fight over a cell phone led to the arrest of a former Illini basketball player over the weekend.

Lieutenant Robert Rea said 25-year-old Joseph Bertrand and his girlfriend were arguing outside shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of East John Street. Rea said Bertrand pushed the woman to the ground, causing minor injuries. He said a passerby witnessed the incident and gave a statement to police.

Bertrand told police that both he and his girlfriend were being aggressive during the argument, as opposed to things being one-sided. Rea said it's not known if alcohol played a role in the fight.

Bertrand bonded out of jail on Saturday and is due in court on Wednesday.
