There's a big difference on spending on a completely new roster mostly of younger players vs retaining one full of juniors/seniors/5th years mixed in with younger roster. Can't just say we spent the most money (in this case 2nd most)without including that we completely flipped our roster for a much younger team.
Why not spend money and stay old? Why couldn't we do that?

Can't say this enough
That is so true. Whoever spends the most money in the offseason should receive an automatic final four birth. /s

A bunch of talented, well paid people in the same room doesn't automatically guarantee success. On paper, this team looked like it had all the potential to make a Sweet 16 or Elite 8 run. It fell just short of my pre-season expectations. I think the anger comes from a great start to the season, a muddy middle, and "got my hopes up and dashed them" end.

I think we all can concede that this was an ENORMOUS challenge, bringing in a virtually whole new team. If we can get to a more steady 4-5 player return each year, we will see fewer roller coaster seasons. We have consistently been one of the top teams in the B1G and more recognized nationally. We even had an Illinois Fan-themed Invesco QQQ commercial, something I have not seen on a national stage before. We were irrelevant from 2007-2019. We are not irrelevant now. The commercial is just one indicator of where we are as a program.

I'm happy that a first round tournament win is not enough and we want more. That is a great place to be. But, I think we can still be grateful for 5 consecutive tournament appearances. I sleep well knowing we have a coach that is driven to have even more success, will adjust rosters and strategies to match the talent of the team, and has put our basketball program back on the map with sustained success.

According to Derek Piper, Illinois spent the 2nd most in the Big 10 on the roster. Finished 7th. That’s not a good return. 1-9 vs the top 15.

We can’t judge Underwood based on whatever the level was before he got to Illinois. He should be judged on the amount of money being spent right now!
Of course he did. Because he took the most expensive and most talented roster in the B1G and missed the tournament and finished 46 in KenPom.

Brad took the 2nd most expensive roster in the B1G and got a 6 seed and finished 17 in KenPom, even with at least one starter missing 38% of our games.

Maybe this is why we are getting outbid for Sarr & Dix? BU trying to keep expectations lower next year

/s just in case
