Kofi Cockburn to miss first 3 games of season

This is utterly ridiculous and is infuriating to me. Gonzaga's head coach drove drunk and was arrested for a DUI and was only suspended ONE game.
Kofi gets a 3 game suspension for just selling some signed jerseys or photos a month prior to NIL going into affect and to make it even more absurd the NCAA has the nerve to make Kofi give back all the money he made to a charity of his choosing. Kofi is being severely unfairly punished for just trying to make a living. I wonder if Zion had to pay back the $400,000 + dollars of money he made for playing at Duke for one season. Stuff like this always turns me off regarding NCAA college sports. The NCAA can rot in hell
People keep bringing up Few, and I get where you all are coming, but it's kind of apples and oranges. The NCAA doesn't really enforce that kind of thing. It's like any player who engages in violations of team rules. Like Kendrick Nunn. The NCAA didn't kick him off the team - that decision was made by the school and athletic dept. The NCAA is enforcing (badly btw, please don't take any of this as a defense of the NCAA) its rules on student-athlete eligibility, which really has nothing to do with criminal conduct of players or coaches. If you have a problem with Few's lenient suspension, your beef is with Gonzaga's athletic dept.

Well they should imo. Few put peoples' lives at risk by driving drunk. Kofi just tried to make a few bucks and was punished for it. (But I do get what you're saying though) The NCAA's priorities are way out of control/baffling imo.

Dickie V is obnoxious and his love of Duke and UNC (but especially Duke) only makes it more obnoxious. But, above all else, he just loves good basketball and is an equal-opportunity disher of praise on good teams and players, so I don't hate him. I just don't want to listen to him call a game.
I think I say this every time Dickie V gets brought up here, but anybody who gets that excited about basketball is someone I want to be around/listen to.

I’ve been looking for examples where the NCAA has dealt a violation for a DUI and I can’t find any. Bill Self’s Jalen Wilson got three games and community service from the university. Okla st’s Bryce Williams has been indefinitely suspended by the university - sounds like it will be lengthy. Other were handed down by their university.

so again, it appears to be apples and oranges with Kofi.

I'm just wondering why we are conflating Kofi's situation and a coach who got a DUI?

Yesterday on Sports Talk a lawyer was on the show, I believe Steve Beckett, could be wrong on name.

He compared Kofi's situation with that of someone that was arrested for marijuana in December when it was illegal and going to court in January when it now is legal and the judge throws it out because the law (rules) changed.

NCAA is really showing that Illinois is not a blue blood school like Gonzaga, Kansas, North Carolina, etc etc. Kofi donated his earnings to charity although he receives an extreme penalty for a non crime nor did he not endanger someone's life.

I don't think it's an extreme penalty. I do agree with you that UNC, Duke, etc wouldn't have gotten the same treatment.

That’s the problem. The NCAA worries about eligibility of the athletes ie school and if they get illegal benefits. But if your school offers fake classes to everyone then your clean. If you take fake SAT classes your clean if you sell jerseys for tattoos or money then the NCAA has a problem.

I don't think that's necessarily true, and I've already brought up the case of Enes Kanter, who would've played for blue blood Kentucky had the NCAA not ruled him permanently ineligible. I think the NCAA does try to avoid penalizing blue blood programs with postseason bans and that type of punishment, but I don't think they care that much about protecting players who play for blue bloods. Does anyone have an example of a player who got a more lenient penalty from the NCAA (as opposed to the program itself).

This. I think people harp too much on the "My school can never have good things". We're not special. I don't think we get screwed over any more than other schools do

Seems an ex-recruit is in the same boat as Kofi.

Maybe the NCAA was playing favorites on our behalf by announcing the suspension prior to the start of our season? Nah. Alternatively, maybe the NCAA is focusing on athletes with some attachment to the State of Illinois?

In his defense, he has always been a fan of the Fighting Illini. But yeah I get your point, and it was nice to see him take to social media and rip on the NCAA with his defense of Kofi. My heart might even have a little more softer side for Vitale now that he's battling cancer. He's been insufferable at times during his time behind the camera, calling games for Dook and being such an irritating homer and a blabbering buffoon in the process. So it's good to see him defending our beloved Illini.
Whether you like or dislike DV for his on air presence, he is a class act. He brought a level of excitement and passion to CBB that had been missing. He was close with Coach Henson and a big fan of Illinois basketball.
This shirt was from 88/89….“The Flyin’ Illini Baby!!!!” as DV would say.
The Battle to Seattle. Magical season.
This still hangs in my closet….

Need to get that out of the closet and framed on the wall! That's a cool piece.

So hold up, wait a minute. A total of $9100 to 12 athletes over 3 years and they upheld it EVEN THOUGH the NCAA said it was an accidental oversight of overpayment.

Yet, McDonald's bags, coaches on tape, and all the other crap going on out there is OK? We've got to break up the NCAA somehow

UMass ain't Kentucky. UMass ain't UCLA. UMass ain't Kansas. Get my point?
