Kylan Boswell out with broken hand

i’m sure these things happen to other teams, but we do seem to have had an abnormal number of freak accidents/injuries/illnesses/suspensions over the past couple of years, particularly to our most important pieces. significantly lowers our ceiling until he’s back and i hope KW doesn’t get completely worn down trying to bear the brunt of boswells absence

KW is the Illini’s PG, so I don’t see why we should be expecting MP to take over PG duties (although I would be happy with that). Maybe he gets more minutes (can hardly get any fewer), but I imagine KW will be the PG. Who will take Boswell’s place? Could be Lee, it could be Davis, or maybe something else entirely, like AS being the off guard, and maybe Z will start along with Tomi. Or maybe BH will now start. Or maybe they have kept the news under wraps, and Ty will be back.

It's awful for Kylan and it dramatically impacts the team's trajectory this year - like it would for any team. No way to sugarcoat it - losing your senior and leader and best defender, second leading scorer

Offensively, I think Andrej steps up in the "get to the basket" role when we need a bucket and we'll have more Jake Davis taking corner threes, but defensively it's a huge step back.

It will be interesting to see how Petrovic fits in - I think we still want to run the offense through Keaton 90% of the time, but I'm hoping Petro can play the drive and dish game and just focus on setting others up, we don't need to him to score that much, just fit into the offensive flow

How's he gonna shoot wearing a cast? Trying to picture a scenario when he comes back, at least the first few weeks, in which his outside shot is going to be adversely affected. In that case, teams can sag off him on D and clog up our offense. This is terrible news. It's insane how many injuries and illnesses we've had in the last 5 years- doubtful any team has had it worse than us.

I don’t think we can seriously rely on Petro after what we’ve seen. It’s gotta come from Andrej and even more from Wagler.

I’d assume we’ll play some bigger lineups more often as well

Could be a good thing, could derail things. We will have to wait and see.

I do think it is a bit ambitious to expect the timeline to match Morez's last year. Different position, hand, etc. I think it will take longer than a month to get back and even longer to get right. Sorry for Kylan to miss out on this, but I am hoping he is right come tourney time.

Feel really bad for Kylan. I think we will miss the most his ability to shut down other teams leading scorer.

We have overcome injuries like this before. Andre stepped in for Ayo. Marcus stepped in for TSJ. This is great opportunity for Petrovic to play +20 minutes per game. However he will have to adjust his game to be less ball dominant.

I think we saw a potential Frankenstein lineup last game with Petro, Jake, Big Z, Tomas and Ben on the floor for last 6 minutes of 1H. In B10 only Michigan has the size to match and I don't think Mara has the speed to cover Tomas outside of paint.

Maybe we won't win @Purdue, @MSU or @Nebraska but we should still give them a heck of a battle. When Kylan gets back we will be even stronger. I like our chances in BTT. We still could get a #3 seed like the TSJ year.

Keys to success
1. Petro steps up - gives us more FB points, hurts defense some
2. Lee becomes a defensive stopper 10 mpg
3. Andrej becomes a defensive stopper, learns to pull-up for mid range jumper ala Marcus D, runs hard on FB to get long passes from David and Petro
4. Tomas takes advantage of more shots and gets back to 15 ppg and more assists
5. Kofi comes back for 4th year with new SG skills he developed in Asia.

15-3 becomes 24-7 (15-5 B10 good for 3 way tie for 2nd).

1. That sucks.

2. It's done; let's move on.

3. Someone please step up and lead.

#20 coming back would shore up the leadership and perimeter defense.

Another promising year right in the toilet. Another 'good' year, instead of an 'exceptional' year when it's all done. ugh.....

Maybe the problem was “How do we get more time for Mihailo?”

Mend quickly, Kylan. Man, oh man.

But exactly how did he fracture his hand?

I think as fans we're possibly entitled to know a few details.

Go Illini.

Wow holy overreaction. How bout 1 game at a time and stop making assumptions about games weeks from now.

A RH ballhandler guard breaking his R hand doesn't sound like a bounce back quick injury. Mid Feb sounds awfully optimistic to me.

Hope Kylan quickly and fully recovers. Finish his Senior year strong.

It’ll be interesting to see where the team turns and who steps up. Yes, this stinks. Opportunity knocks.

I’ll miss Kylan but can’t fix that now. We’ll see him in February.

Go Illini

What are the tangibles that Kylan brings?
- Ability to get to the rim
- Secondary playmaker
- 3 point threat
- Strong, versatile on-ball defender

No single person is going to replace him but we have enough depth to fill the voids by committee, IMO.

Will need to rely more on Andrej and possibly more post entries to the twins to get shots at the rim.

Mirk and Petro will need to take on more of a playmaking role. And if Andrej could get more comfortable kicking it out off of drives, that would be good.

Ben's gotta hit threes when he's open.

Lee can step in when needed to help on the ball.

I think we can survive and still give ourselves an outside shot at a 2 or 3 seed but the way we do it will look a little different.

Heal up fast, KB!
